KPT Handled a Record 18,900 Tons of Rock Phosphate

KPT Averts Crisis in Gusting Wind

signicant milestone of handling 18,900 tons of Rock Phosphate from marine vessel “EUROPA” was recorded

at East Wharf of Karachi Port during the last 24 hours of 7th April 2019. Karachi Port Trust constantly maintains standard at port and port

users have to comply with international safety standards benchmark.

Shipping agents, stevedoring rms and labours have played their due role in realizing this milestone achievement at the port.

It reects on the trade oriented favourable policies of Federal Government enforced by the Minister for Maritime Aairs Syed Ali Haider Zaidi at Karachi Port.

A

he gusting wind of 45-50 Knots was confronted by the ships berthed at KPT on 15th April 2019. Impact of

sudden high speed winds was so severe that berthing hawsers of various ships secured at Fixed Mooring and South Wharf got parted. However, timely response by KPT Pilots and Tugs averted the situation which could have resulted in a major disaster. To name a few, MV HYUNDAI MERCURY berthed at South Wharf, had all its stern ropes parted but ship managed to hold on to its head ropes and

anchor till the arrival of KPT Tugs and Pilots. Immediate actions by Master of the ship, Capt. Deliu Valentin, were highly professional in prevailing situation, which saved the ship from danger of groundings.

On the parallel, timely and speedy response by KPT Pilots and Tugs helped substantially in controlling the situation and bringing back the ship to berth safely. Another ship M.V. MISKI moored at harbour was also timely assisted by tug boats which helped in securing back to its

position. It was the alertness of Crisis Management Centre and timely professional response of KPT Pilots & Tugs, which prevented a disaster happening at KPT.

Federal Minister of Maritime Aairs Mr. Ali Haider Zaidi was kept informed about the situation continuously by Chairman KPT. Minister highly appreciated the response generated by KPT Management Team for an eective response and preventing any accident in the KPT.

05 June, 2019WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

ENGR. SYED HUMAIR ALI, Assistant Network Administrator of MIS Department did the structural Health Monitoring of Native Jetty Bridge through Wireless Sensor Network by analyzing the vibration responses. He is currently a PhD candidate at NUST PNEC Karachi. He uses accelerometers for sensing vibration responses that arises with dierent signature pattern with respect to trac load and transmit them wirelessly to base station that is capable of uploading it on cloud database through WSN network for

extraction of modal frequencies at dierent parts of bridge. This state of the art method is low powered sensor based and is capable of monitoring Native Jetty Bridge 24/7.Each WSN node is powered by two AA size batteries which remains alive for a year without any hindrance or need for replacement. The same as his conference paper has already been accepted by Smart SysTech conference, Dresden GERMANY.
