The burden of this message was immense. People were deeply hurt, but what they did not realize, the reason they were hurting was a direct result of their own hands. That is so common in life, we cause the majority of our hurts by our hands. Malachi, living in the days of Nehemiah, would have the burden of telling the people their hurts they had inflicted. His message was a burden of love. God established His covenant with Israel, even though there were “greater” nations among the land (Exodus 19:5, Deut 7:7). But in Malachi’s day their complaint was that God did not love them the way they wanted, “In what way have You loved us?” God answered, “Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?...Yet Jacob I have loved; but Esau I have hated” (Malachi 1:2- 3). Simply put, Jacob (Israel) had been given the favor of God, and Esau’s descendants had forsaken God, and thus God set His “hatred” against their disobedience. His message was a burden of loyalty. Israel would be loyal to a father or master, but God said, “If then I am the Father, where is My honor? And if I am a Master, where is My reverence?” Their sacrifices to God were out of the leftovers, the scrap, and not the best. The lame, blind, and defiled, were offered to God (Malachi 1:7, 8). Worship had become a wearied task, no longer was a welcomed tribute (Malachi 1:13). The burden was getting heavier. In the Lord’s words they, “corrupted the covenant.” A priest, a messenger of God should motivate others to turn from iniquity, make a right change, and cause a desire for a deeper relationship with the Lord. They had done just the opposite. They were contemptible, partial, and neglectful. His message was a burden of leaving. God’s message moved in like a narrowing laser or a tightening beam of light, encompassing a wide area at first and then moving with a precise focus. He started with the nation, moved to the priests and worshipers, and then to the home, namely the marriages of the people. Their homes were being shattered by agony of the land. They were letting their feelings guide their faith in a direction away from God and one another. The end result was divorce among the marriages of many, and God witnessing it all (Malachi 2:14-16). God named the fallout between families “violence” inflicted on each other. His final words, “I hate divorce.” Anytime our Lord sees His people endure hurt and heartache He hates what has happened to them. His answer was to send a message of hope, and He would do that in His Son (Malachi 3:1). Through the month of July we will look deeply into our homes and see the blessings of bringing Jesus as the answer for our hearts, our homes, and our hopes. I hope you know He is the answer for your home. His message was a burden of leading. The priests were failing in leadership. They no longer lead souls to God, they defiled their role and they desecrated their covenant with God. God would shame them, literally by His promise of “refuse” being on their faces (Malachi 2:3).

“I Hope You Know”

SHARING HEAVEN

IN 2011

How do you say what needs saying, when no one wants to hear? The message from the one whose name means, “Messenger of Yahweh” would begin with haunting words, “The burden of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi” (Malachi 1:1).

But in Malachi’s day their complaint was that God did not love them the way they wanted, “In what way have You loved us?” God answered, “Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?...Yet Jacob I have loved; but Esau I have hated” (Malachi 1:2-3).

CAMP MERIBAH HAS COME…. to a close for yet another year, and what a year it was. It was awesome to see so many on the hill this summer getting to be a part of something special. Anytime we have the opportunity to study God’s Word and worship Him, it is without a doubt special! I want to say a sincere thank you to everyone who works so hard every summer at Camp Meribah. Especially to Clay and Tara Chessor, Joey and Paula Chilton, Craig Shelton, Matthew Dotson, and anyone else who gave of their time to help the young people of Hickman County come to

know God better. Camp Meribah is a special place and we are blessed to have it just across the river! AS YOU READ THIS ARTICLE, WE ARE WELL ON OUR…. way to Bogalusa, LA. More than a year’s worth of planning has gone into this trip and I know that it will be special. The congregation in Bogalusa has approximately 45 members and is looking to grow that even more. Mike Price is their minister and has been a vital part of the planning for this trip. John Durham had the opportunity to visit them earlier this year and was excited about the potential of this area. Our hope as a youth program is to be able to encourage their members in anyway that we can. This year, we are focusing on a Super Saturday event that will hopefully give us the opportunity to welcome in new folks from the community so that they might get to know some of the existing members. As I’ve said so many times before, I believe that relationships are essential, and the more relationships that we are able to build in this community, the greater the opportunity for growth. This week we are door knocking and passing out flyers trying to bring about more awareness of the congregation. We have several wonderful adults going with us who are eager to get to work. I really want to say thank you to John Durham before we even start, simply because of his heart and his willingness to spread the Gospel. We need more people in this world like John who are willing to take the Word wherever it’s not being preached. The word is being preached in Bogalusa, LA currently, and our prayer is that we might help fan the flames of this growing congregation so that they might be able to reach out to a community that is longing to hear the word. Please continue to pray for this group, as they set out, willing to get their hands dirty and do whatever God calls them to do. Light the Way-Chris
