SHARINGAND
TURN-TAKING
Children who act like this are not trying to be mean. Instead, the social skills of sharing, taking turns, and
waiting for turns are simply not yet
part of their behavior.
As noted by Katz and McClellan (1997), “Turn taking involves being able to detect cues in a partner’s behavior that indicate that he is about to bring his turn to an end; to discern the moment that would be the most
propitious to press for one’s own turn; and so forth. Mastery of these skills takes
time and lots of experience.”
