Introduction: Industrial Symbiosis (IS) Phases
Identification
Evaluation
Implementation
Administration
SHAREBOX decision support tools developed by the University of Twente provide two services that support firms in:
• the Evaluation phase (EVALIS Service)
• and the cost-allocation process in the Implementation Phase (COSTIS Service).

IS Evaluation
• An IS opportunity can be implemented in various forms:
• Using different modes of transportation
• Using different recycling technologies

What is EVALIS?
Single vs. Shared Mode
How to Use EVALIS

An Industrial Symbiosis (IS) opportunity between two firms can be implemented in
various forms, for instance, as a result of using different modes of transportation or
recycling technologies.
EVALIS (Evaluation Tool for Industrial Symbiosis) is a decision support tool for
evaluating potential industrial symbiosis opportunities.
It supports firms whether, and based on what priority, to consider an opportunity by
ranking potential implementations with respect to obtainable cost reductions.
Firm managers can either use it individually, in the single mode, or together with
their IS partner, in the shared mode.

In the single mode — where one firm enters all the required information — you will
have a ranking based on exact values from your side and estimated values about the
other company.
The shared mode — in which firms provide the required information together — the
ranking is based on the entered values from both sides.
Single Mode vs. Shared Mode

How to use EVALIS
EVALIS can be used for any potential IS opportunity.
After choosing the appropriate mode (single or shared), user will see a data entry form.
User fills the fields and clicks on the Save button to create an implementation profile.
For a full description on how to fill the forms and use these two services, see the “Help File” in the SHAREBOX platform.

Cost-Sharing in IS

Having an implemented
relation, what would be a
reasonable and stable
cost allocation for
involved firms?

What is COSTIS?
Single vs. Shared Mode

What is COSTIS?
Having an implemented Industrial Symbiosis (IS) relation, what would be a reasonable way to share
the operational costs among the firms?
COSTIS (Cost-sharing Tool for Industrial Symbiosis) is a method for sharing the total operational cost
with respect to firms' traditional costs.
Firm managers can either use it individually, in the single mode, or together with their IS partner, in
the shared mode.

Single Mode vs. Shared Mode
When firms already realized a relation and are aware of the collective costs, they can use the shared
mode of COSTIS to learn about their individual shares.
In this mode, where firms provide the required information together, the individual cost-shares will be
calculated based on the entered values from both sides.
This mode is useful for firms that already realized the relation, built a level of common understanding,
and are interested in sharing the collective operational costs.
In the single mode, in which one firm enters all the required information, individual cost-shares will be
calculated based on exact values from one side and estimated values about the other side of the IS
relation.
This mode can be used as a pre-negotiation decision support tool when firms have an estimation of the
costs and aim to learn about the estimation of their individual shares (prior to negotiating and
implementing the relation).

How to Use COSTIS
COSTIS can be used for potential or
implemented IS relation.
After choosing the appropriate mode, user will
see a data entry form.
In the single mode, the user fills all the fields and
clicks on the Save button.
The result is the amount that the firm is ought to
pay out of the total operational cost.
Results will be also shown with graphics to
compare the cost-share in case the symbiotic
relation is implemented with the case of not
implementing the relation.
