SHAPING THE COMMUNITY’S FUTUREONE STUDENT AT A TIME

2016-17 IMPACT REPORTHILLSBOROUGH EDUCATION FOUNDATIONJULY 1 - JUNE 30

Perhaps the best part about producing an impact report is it forces you to really take a step back and look at everything your organization was able to accomplish over the past year. Thanks to overwhelming community support, together, we are proud to say that we truly delivered on our mission of supporting students and their academic achievement.

As you flip through this report, you’ll view our efforts in key areas of impact such as mentoring, career readiness, scholarships, school supplies & resources and educator recognition & development. Beyond the statistics and graphics, you’ll read the stories of teens like Matthew, a Take Stock in Children scholarship recipient who will be first in his family to attend college. Or Ms. Harris, a teacher who receives critical school supplies to give to her students from our Teaching Tools Store each month. Stories like these are the embodiment of HEF’s mission. Examples of what our community’s future can be when it invests in education.

We remain steadfast in our mission to make certain every student has the tools they need to succeed academically. Your support is transforming our community for the better; putting at-risk students on a path to high-school graduation, and ultimately creating a better future for themselves. According to the Alliance for Excellent Education, increasing the national graduation rate to 90% would boost the annual gross domestic product by $11.5 billion and annual earnings by $7.2 billion. This aligns perfectly with our vision and full support of Hillsborough County Public Schools' strategic priority of a 90% graduation rate by 2020. Your support is an investment in our future workforce and a better Tampa Bay community.

We thank our tremendous volunteers, donors, board members and staff for joining us on this journey to give students every opportunity possible to reach academic success and their highest potential.

As we enter our 30th year supporting Hillsborough County students, we look forward to continued growth – both in students impacted and operational efficiency – so we can be the best stewards of our resources that we can possibly be.

Sincerely,

“No other investment yields as great a return as the investment in education.”

SHAPING FUTURESwith mentoring & college scholarshipsIn 2016-17, our supporters helped us put 354 Hillsborough County Public School students on the path

to high-school graduation with scholarships and mentoring. At-risk students enter into the

Foundation's Take Stock in Children program as early as middle school. They are matched with

caring, adult mentors – to help guide them on their journey to success – and receive a college

scholarship upon graduation. We also awarded community scholarships, funded by our generous

donors, to high-school seniors.

The Take Stock in Children program gives me more than a scholarship – I also have a person I can go to if I need help with anything. He motivates me to figure out what I'm interested in and what I want to do.

"MATTHEW MENDOZACLASS OF 2020

"

Through having a mentor, I've learned how to focus on what I need to do. She's also a shoulder to cry on. When I'm having troubles, I'm able to talk to her when I feel like I can't talk to anyone else.

At the Take Stock in Children Scholar Celebration in the spring, we honored our

78 graduates and welcomed

104 new HCPS students into the

program.

SHAPING FUTURESwith school supplies

Basic school supplies may not be in the family budget for many HCPS students – 64 percent of the

district's 200,000-plus students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. So, many teachers spend more

than $500 per year out of their own pockets on school supplies for their students*. That's where the

Foundation's Teaching Tools Store comes in. In 2016-17, nearly 3,000 teachers at the county's 140 Title

1 schools visited the Store to stock up on much-needed free school supplies for their students.

" "

The Hillsborough Education Foundation has been such a big help, helping me provide my students with the tools they need to be successful.

"JESSICA BARSCHTEACHER | ALEXANDER ELEMENTARY

The Teaching Tools Store is a great place because it prevents any child from feeling as though they don't have what they need. It's a big help for teachers.

SHAPING FUTURESwith educator support A crucial component of student success is making sure their teachers are supported. Whether it is

helping new teachers get acclimated at the Hillsborough Educator Institute or recognizing stellar

HCPS employees at the annual Excellence in Education Awards, we strive to do all we can to help

those on the front lines of our kids' journey to graduation.
