SHAPEOKO 3
PARTS LIST
Parts included with your kit Each part listed on the packing list should have been included with your kit. If after checking, you find that your kit is missing one or more parts, please contact [email protected] and we’ll get you fixed up right away.
For reference, you will find a detailed print for each part in the back of this manual.
OVERVIEW
Objective The Shapeoko 3, desktop CNC cutting machine was designed to be easily assembled in a few hours of work with common tools provided with the kit. There is no fabrication to worry about.
Where to get help if you need it? There are a few avenues for support when assembling your machine. Depending on the type of person you are, one of these options will be a better fit that the others.
1. Forum - There is a thriving community with thousands of Shapeoko users talking every day. These are owners of Shapeoko 1, Shapeoko 2, and Shapeoko 3 machines. It’s a friendly place that is a great reference for any sort of Shapeoko (or CNC) related question. [www.shapeoko.com/forum]
2. Wiki - Every ounce of information that’s been learned from the Shapeoko project has been shared and documented through the wiki. You can find relevant Shapeoko 3 information here: [http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/Shapeoko_3]
3. Email Support - If the forum isn’t your thing and you’re not into wikis, shoot us an email and we’ll do our best to get you moving along with your build. [[email protected]]

Order of Events Shapeoko 3 consists of 5 basic assemblies which are put together in 6 easy steps. It’s best to work through the assembly of the machine systematically, progressing from one assembly on to the next step once completed.
1. Base Frame Assembly
2. Y-Carriage Assembly
3. X-Carriage Assembly
4. Z-Carriage Assembly
5. Gantry Assembly
6. Final Assembly

Once the sub assemblies are done, we can move along to building the main assembly. After the main assembly has been completed, we will run the belts, connect the controller, wire the motors, and finally, connect the machine to your computer for its first movements.
This is going to be fun. Turn the page to get started!

PEM Nut - pressed into bottom of plate. Exploded for clarity.

To begin assembly, lay out all of your base frame components on the table, except the end plates (#6). [For an underside view of the machine, see page 34.]
Place one piece of MDF over half of the components laid out on the table. Note the orientation, the edge with 4 holes goes on the outside, the edge with three holes goes on the inside. Also note each hole is pocketed (sunk), make sure the pockets are facing up, and are not on the bottom of the MDF.
After the pieces are roughly aligned, begin on one edge and thread in an M5 x 16mm button head cap screw into each of the two center holes. You don't need to tighten these down just yet. Finger tight is just fine. Insert another screw into the center hole on the inside of the assembly.
Do the other side of the base frame the same way as shown above. When done, you should have 6 screws put into the assembly.

Now, you can move on to attaching the front and rear plates. Again, don't assemble too tight at this point. After the entire assembly is finished, we’ll go through, square up the machine and get everything tight. Over tightening now will make squaring more difficult later.

Assembly #2 - Y Axis Carriage Plate There are 2 of these assemblies for each Shapeoko 3 machine. The assemblies are identical mirrors of each other and assembly is done the same way for both (just mirrored). Below are the instructions for assembling the right side Carriage Plate. Again, the left side is identical mirrored.
Notes:- washers located between each wheel and the plate. - eccentric nuts go on bottom set of wheels. - Your bearings (#2) may be plain (not flanged).

Assembly #3 - X Axis Carriage Plate The X carriage assembly is what rides left to right across our machine. Both the X and the Z axis stepper motors are mounted to this plate.
To Begin: Bolt on the Z-Axis Rails to the metal plate. There are two rails, and each requires:
• M6 x 12mm Button Head cap screw x 2 • M6 Flat Washer x 2 • M6 Square Nut x 2 • Rail (aluminum extrusion) x 1

Moving on through the assembly, after the rails have been installed, move on to the v-wheels, noting that the eccentric nuts go on the bottom set of wheels.
When Installing the bearing idlers, note the direction of the screw. The nut end of the assembly needs to be on the bearing side. If you put the nut on the inside of the assembly (on the plate side) you’ll have an interference issue when trying to move the z-axis carriage up and down. See diagram on following page for more details.

After the bearing idlers are done, move to the X-Axis stepper motor. Note the orientation of the pulley! The set screw side of the pulley needs to be out - backwards from traditional install. This is only for this axis, the rest of the pulleys get installed the regular way.
Install the Z-axis stepper motor by attaching it to the plate with four (4) M5 x 16mm Button head cap screws. Note the nuts go on the backside of the motor, not the plate side.
When Installing the bearing idlers, note the direction of the screw. The nut end of the assembly needs to be on the bearing side. If you put the nut on the inside of the assembly (on the plate side) you’ll have an interference issue when trying to move the z-axis carriage up and down.
The belt shown in the previous image is for reference purposes. When we actually install the belt, we’ll first install it on the z-axis carriage, then loop it around the X-axis assembly.

Assembly #4 - Z Axis Carriage Plate The z-axis carriage plate moves up and down on your machine. After this step is completed, we will mate this plate up with the X axis plate to complete the assembly.
Notes:- washers located between each wheel and the plate. - eccentric nuts go on right set of wheels (from this view). - You may need to bend the hooks on your springs so they form a tighter circle. - Spindle mount can be installed *after* the entire machine is completed.
