A fortunate but sometimes frustrating aspect of being human beings is that we are very conscious of how we look and feel. This is partly due to the fact that our brains closely link physical well being with emotions of contentment - if we are feeling terrific about ourselves physically, then it will follow that we are much happier about life in general.Conversely, if we are feeling overweight, out of condition and physically wrecked, then we are likely to be a bit depressed and probably seek solace in the very

things we should be avoiding, like junk food or too much alcohol.Nutrition and exercise are inexorably connected, and if both are done correctly, the result is a person who feels great about themselves and conveys that image to everyone else. But health and fitness needs motivation (unfortunately) so why not join your local gym or leisure centre or join some local exercise classes. The next few pages should give you some inspiration for getting fit and healthy in time for all those Christmas parties!

sceneUlTimaTE HEalTH CliNiCA new health revolution is taking place in Ireland as a result of a preference towards outdoor activity as the preferred means of exercise combined with complementary health treatments such as colonic hydrotherapy. According to the managing therapist of Ultimate Health Clinic in Limerick and Ennis, Caroline Danaher, people are recognizing the value of looking after their systems which are the main promoters of health, particularly colons. Maintaining a healthy colon is now recognised as one of the most important organs for a variety of reasons. The three main functions of the colon are final digestion of our food, the elimination of digestive residue and the discharge of toxins and wastes from our body.Caroline Danaher explained ‘Alternative therapies like colon hydrotherapy and colonic irrigation are not just for detoxification, rejuvenation and restoration of good colon health. They also may be instrumental in preventing the occurrence of disease.’ Poor diet, improper food-combining and lack of dietary fiber make maintenance of a healthy colon virtually impossible. Virtually all weight challenges can be traced

SHANNON SCENE - the local magazine for shannonHallOWEEN

The celebration of Halloween started in Ireland around 100AD. Back then, Hallowe’en was a pagan festival celebrated by the Celts of Ireland who called it “Samhain”, an old Irish word meaning the ‘end of Summer’. They believed that on the eve of Samhain (Hallowe’en), the dead spirits would revisit the mortal world, so huge bonfires were lit to keep away any evil spirits. It is known in Gaelic as ‘Oíche Shamhna’ and is celebrated on the 31st of October each year. Here are just some Hallowe’en traditions which are still very much alive today. There are many stories of how the Jack O Lantern custom came about in Ireland. One old tale says it was as a result of a blacksmith called Jack who crossed the devil. He made the devil promise he would not go to hell, but when he was denied entry to heaven, he was left to

wander the earth. He told the devil he could not wander about forever in the dark and the devil tossed him an ember from the fires of hell, so Jack placed this in a hollowed out turnip. From that day, Jack roamed the earth using his Jack O Lantern to light the way. It is said that when the Irish immigrated to the States they took this Halloween tradition with them, but instead of using turnips, then began to use pumpkins as they were much more plentiful!Trick or treating originated centuries ago when the poor would go round to the rich peoples houses and ask for food or money, which they would then use for their celebration of Halloween. Nowadays, children dress up in scary costumes and go house to house trick or treating, arriving home with bags of goodies which they use for their Halloween party.Over the past number of years, people have begun decorating their house & gardens with weird and frightening ghoulish delights. Parties are

now commonplace with people readily getting into the ‘spirit’ of things. Here are a few tips to help your party go with a bang: Hire a costume from your local costume shop. Make a punch with a difference - try ‘Nuclear Waste’, made with blue Curacao mixed with orange juice and vodka. Or for kids parties, add a revolting tinge to fruit juice with a few drops of food colouring for a wicked witches’ brew.Party games are a must, not just for the children. Apple bobbing, jam doughnyts suspended on strings, feelie boxes, hidden surprises inside boxes, piles of flour with hidden treasures (accessed using your mouth only).Don’t forget to get the atmosphere right with spooky music, black light bulbs and glow sticks around the place.

SHaNNON SOCCEr “bEaT THE STrEETS”

Following the success of the Shannon “Beat the Streets” soccer t o u r n a m e n t which took place last year for 4th 5th and 6th year students the tournament will again take place this November in Shannon.“Beat the Streets” is a soccer t o u r n a m e n t where teams

represent their housing estate or area in 5 aside matches (squad of 8) and must have an adult from the area as their manager. Last year was the first time Shannon “Beat the Streets” took place in Co. Clare and proved to be a huge success among the community. The league was an initiative of Community Garda Diarmuid O’ Brien stationed in Shannon and FAI county development officer in Co. Clare, Denis Hynes. Up to 70 teenagers from Shannon and the surrounding areas took part in the league over the four week period in November seeking to claim the title as Shannon “Beat the Streets” Champions. The league which got the backing of FAI got huge support from the community of Shannon and surrounding areas. Wolfe Tones GAA club generously sponsored their astro turf

facilities, and the Order of Malta headed by paramedic Ian Gallagher provided an ambulance and fist aid facilities throughout the league. The Football clubs in Shannon were of great help with members such as John Kelly (Shannon Town FC) and Donal McGee (Bunratty FC) refereeing games throughout the League. The perpetual trophy which was presented to the winners “Sixmilestoshannnon” was sponsored by Jim Madden of the Clare District Soccer League and the winners will receive tickets to a Republic of Ireland International soccer match at the new Aviva Stadium in Dublin. These were also sponsored by the FAI. The surprise and star guest on the night of last year’s final was former Ireland and international Soccer player Ray Houghton who presented the cup to Garda O’Brien on behalf of the FAI. Mr Houghton chatted among the kids and stood for photos with each team before the games started. An initiative like Shannon “Beat the Streets” is a prime example of how a community based initiative can provide an alternative activity for teenagers in Shannon and the surrounding areas during the winter months. Everyone involved gave their time free of charge and are a credit to Shannon and the various organisations they represent in what will now become an annual event in Shannon. This year members of Neighbourhood watch are being encouraged to get involved as team managers. For further information on Shannon “Beat the Streets” soccer tournament contact Shannon Community Garda Diarmuid O’Brien. Telephone 085 2119631.

SHaNNON TOWN UNiTEd NOTESThe new committee of Shannon Town United would like to thank Mr John Kelly who has stepped down

from the chair. John’s energy and drive for the football club is well known throughout the town and we hope that John will continue to work within the club. We would like to wish John and his family all the very best. The 2010/2011 season is starting soon and all teams are now back in training. For training times and venues please see our website at www.shannontownunitedafc.com. You will also find fixtures, results, statistics and some very interesting articles on the site. Of particular note is the photo album section where some of the pictures date back quite a long way into the clubs archives and throws up some terrifying images!

The clubs 300 Club Draw takes place every last Sunday of each month in the Crossroads Tavern, Drumgeely. First prize each month is €1,000 and second place is €50. Cost per month to enter is €10 and further information can be sought from any committee member or from the website.

With two successful Celtic camps already under our belts this year, we are holding a third camp during the Halloween holiday period in October. Over 60 members took place on each camp so far and the training by Glasgow Celtic has proved challenging and stimulating for all our members. Further information can be found on the

website, www.shannontownunitedafc.com or from any committee member.

SHANNON SCENE - the local magazine for shannon

THE riNS 92.5 Fm radiO bliTz - yOUr COmmUNiTy radiO UPdaTE The Radio Blitz was an ambitious idea! To broadcast for a whole week. Every day! On the first Rins 92.5 FM licensed run, we had broadcast on Sundays only, and while everything ran smoothly, a weekly broadcast still takes a huge amount of effort & preparation. So when we decided this run to push

ourselves and broadcast for a full week in June, no-one was under the illusion that it was going to be easy. But we succeeded! Sailing close to the wind, and with plenty of laughs along the way. Our only heart attack occurred, when high winds blew the transmitter off kilter in time for our opening day. It felt like disaster, but one engineer, and one cherry picker later and we were well and truly on air. And we didn’t feel so bad when we were told the big boys - Clare FM had been off air for a couple of

hours also.Broadcasting from the Court house in Sixmilebridge, courtesy of our friends in The Bridge Complex (thanks guys) we were hitting,

Shannon, Sixmilebridge, Newmarket and beyond, loud and clear.

The scheduled line up included Shannon musicians, Derek Buckley And Geoff O’Toole, who kept the laughs and sounds going on The Music Suite. Veteran broadcaster Nick Condon’s Mostly Country was of it’s usual high standard, while new volunteer Arron O’Dwyer had a great success with The RinsMix and its mix of Hip Hop & RnB. Pop cheol agus caint as gaeilge featured in Gael Cheol with Elaine Dillon. And in between organising us all, Pat Barry even managed to host his jazz program, Night Moods. Thanks to all our great volunteers, too many to list here, you know who you are.
