Congratulations to both Deb Elliott and Sue Lowe who received a Regional Director’s Award for Excellence in Teaching at a special Education Week ceremony held in Tuncurry last week. Deb and Sue are teachers with many years of experience, between them, in the humanities and maths/science fields respectively. In their roles as Norta Norta tutors, working with and supporting senior Aboriginal students, they work closely one-on-one with the students, to engage and prepare them for their HSC.

Deb and Sue have built a strong rapport with all students and have established networks of trust and respect. Through their interactions, with the students, they have equipped them with the skills and strategies to enable them to manage their

time to successfully complete assessment and classroom tasks.

They have been instrumental, on many occasions, in students avoiding an “N” award through the positive pressure and support they offer the students. Both Deb and Sue make themselves available to the students 7 days a week, often visiting and working with the students outside of school hours and during the holidays, to assist with their studies.

Deb and Sue have met with the parents/carers of all their students they tutor, completing Personalised Learning Plans (PLPs) in collaboration with the students and their families. The PLPs are the basis of a very strong working relationship between the tutors and the students, which meet the individual needs of each student. In their role as Norta Norta mentors, Deb and Sue go above and beyond the program’s expectations in their personal relationships and interactions with the students. Their dedication to the students is widely acknowledged and highly respected by the staff, students and parents at Bulahdelah Central School. Their passion for the program goes beyond just providing targeted support to Aboriginal students to accelerate progress in achievement in literacy and numeracy. It encompasses the whole student; their physical, emotional and educational wellbeing. The senior indigenous students at BCS are indeed very fortunate to have Deb and Sue as mentors. Their passion and dedication is unsurpassed and the students will benefit greatly from their support, guidance and friendship.

Thank you to those parents who took the

opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher to

discuss their academic and social achievement

and progress. We appreciate you taking time out

of your busy schedules to foster the

parent/school partnership. If you couldn’t make it

to the interviews, last week, and would like to

meet with your child’s teacher, then contact the

school office and a suitable time will be

negotiated. The Active After School Care program recommenced last week. We can offer 34 places in this program. We currently have about 28 students enrolled in the program, for this term, so if your child would like to participate, contact the school office for an application form. Sports for this term include indoor hockey, volleyball, lacrosse and netball. As of this week (Week 4) the AASC program will be held on Monday and Thursday afternoons, commencing at 3:30pm. The program will run through until Week 9. Our Stage 3 debaters were narrowly defeated by Bungwahl in what was described as a very close debate. The team comprising Tim Smith, Mary-Joy Bramston, Savannah Williams and Isabella Francis should be congratulated on their efforts. We are very proud of them! The next debate will be held in Week 5 against Tea Gardens. The topic is “We should have 3 day weekends.” We will be arguing the negative case. Thanks to Mrs Wills for coaching and mentoring the team. Good luck in your next debate! Our Education Week public speaking was well supported by parents.

Thanks for coming to school and sharing in the fun and excitement of learning with your child. We always enjoy having parents at school. Congratulations to our winners and place getters in the public speaking. See results further on in the newsletter. Well done to all the speakers! Our SAKG is really starting to take shape with the students harvesting a range of greens last week including broccoli, silverbeet, carrots and a variety of salad greens. This produce is then used in the kitchen classes which are really buzzing. Some of the foods already cooked and shared by the students include focaccia, falafels, pizza dough, curry pumpkin, banana fritters and healthy salads accompanied by tasty dressings. We are always looking for volunteers so if you have some free time we would love to hear from you. Please ensure that all items of clothing are clearly marked with your child’s name. The lost property bin is getting very full. If your child has to come to school out of uniform, please forward a note of explanation to your child’s teacher. Thanks for your cooperation. I would like to thank Jody Mostyn for her work in K/1 during Mr Gibbs absence. We are very fortunate to have such a high quality teacher who can come in and do a fabulous job. Thanks Jody! I hope we see you back at BCS very soon. Some dates for your diary: 14th August Zone Athletics (field events) 17th August Zone Athletics (track events)

Bulahdelah Central School recently held the K - 6 Public Speaking competition during Education Week. All students prepared a speech and competed at grade level. The Grand finalists were then selected and competed on Thursday, in front of parents and the student body.

The competition was tough and all speakers are to be congratulated on both content and delivery. A list of place-getters follows. Well done Primary students and staff for your commitment to developing the speaking skills of our future leaders.

The Years 3-6 children are so excited to finally enter their kitchen and have now moved into the next phase of their program, Preparing and Sharing. With a bountiful harvest of carrots, silverbeet and rocket from their garden, and mandarins, salad greens, herbs, lemons and limes kindly donated from gardens within the community, the children prepared this delicious menu to share. Term 1 Week 1 Kitchen Garden Menu Salad of the Imagination Fresh Ricotta and Leafy Green Parcels Foccacia with Rocket Drizzle Carrot Cake Caramelised Mandarins with Citrus Yogurt

The favourite recipe of the week was the Fresh Ricotta and Leafy Green Parcels. If you would like to volunteer in the kitchen or garden for a few hours a week on Wednesdays or Fridays, even if only once a term, please feel free to call Nikki on 0432 181 633. Anyone also wanting to share their excess garden produce please do. This helps us to sustain this wonderful program, especially in these early days while we wait for our fruit trees to fruit and vegies to multiply. For example; if you have too many oranges or citrus fruit please send them in and the kids can learn to preserve some jam, or you might have too many sweet potatoes or pumpkins.

Last week was Education Week and a number of important educational events were held at the school. On Tuesday students in Year 10 participated in a subject selection Expo, where they were informed about a wide range of HSC courses and options. This was followed by a parent information night on the Thursday. Students will now be required to make a selection in the next couple of weeks by going on line and entering their preferred subjects for the Preliminary course in 2013. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me (Roger Horton) at school. Another major event that occurred during the week was the culmination of our Middle School Olympics activities. Students were allocated to a country and participated in a range of events that focused on learning about the Olympics and their country and participating in a variety of team challenges which resulted in a presentation of medals last Friday. Congratulations to all the students who showed true sportsmanship and to Mrs McDonald for her efforts in organising the events. On Wednesday two of our staff was presented with Regional Director’s Awards for their work as Norta Norta tutors for our senior students. Congratulations to Mrs Deborah Elliot and Mrs Sue Lowe for gaining the award and for their continued dedication in helping our Aboriginal students with their studies. Currently our school has a major focus on attendance and has been given a substantial grant from the Department of Education to improve our engagement and attendance rates. One area we are particularly concerned about is the numbers of unexplained absences where students are absent and do not bring a note explaining why they have been absent. Students are required to attend school every day and legally their parents must provide an explanation for any absence.

The school must use one of the following codes when reporting absences: A A student’s absence is unexplained or unjustified. This code is used if no notice has been given by parents within SEVEN days of the absence S A student’s absence is due to sickness or the result of a medical appointment. A medical certificate may be required if the absence is more than FOUR days. L Leave may be recorded up to FIFTEEN days in a school year if the Principal accepts events like misadventure or unforeseen event, illness of an immediate family member, attendance at funerals or recognised religious or ceremonial events. All other absences may be recorded as unjustified so please ensure that your child brings a note when they are absent. Students were given a form for absent notes at the beginning of the year which may make it easier for parents. If you require more please let us know. As part of our encouragement for students to attend school regularly Mrs Gilbert has organised a prize of an i-pad for one person who has 100% attendance at the end of the year. Our HSC trials concluded last week and students will now focus on completing their courses and major works prior to beginning revision of their work. A report will be issued at the final assembly for Year 12.

Finally congratulations to Hayley Follett who has been successful in gaining the prestigious Pierre de Coubertin award for her achievements in sport and her studies. This award is in honour of

the founding of the Olympic movement and is awarded to senior

students only and they are required to submit an essay demonstrating how they have fulfilled the principles of Olympism and are able to provide comprehensive curriculum vitae of their sporting achievements, which must include representation at regional level.

In January 2013 Student Exchange Australia New Zealand Ltd will be receiving exchange students from Europe, Canada, the USA, Japan and Latin America. Our new arrivals will live with a volunteer host family and attend a local school for 2-10 months. I would like to inform Bulahdelah Central School students and their families about this exciting opportunity to experience a different culture without having to leave their homes. It's a great way for them to learn about a new country and share an unforgettable experience with the entire family! Thousands of volunteer families have enjoyed hosting a visiting teenager from another country. Many of them come back every year and host again. By opening their home and hearts, to an international exchange student, families can also:

Make a life long link to a family in another country Learn about another culture Share the beauty of Australia and our culture Gain a new family member Contribute to International goodwill

Develop a friendship that will last for many years

Our students bring with them their own spending money, health insurance and a wonderful attitude and desire to learn about their new host country. The whole family….and relatives and friends….will grow and learn as they all get to know their new ‘son’ or ‘daughter’ from another land.

Student Exchange Australia New Zealand is a not-for-profit secondary exchange organisation which is registered with education & regulatory authorities in each State and Territory. You can find out more about our organisation by visiting www.studentexchange.org.au.

If you have any questions about hosting an exchange student or would like to view profiles of students arriving from other countries, call our office on 1300 135 331 or visit our website. Our staff members will be happy to discuss which student might be best suited to your family. No obligation.

15 students from Year 11 and 3 teachers set off for the Snowy Mountains for the annual Year 11 trip to the snow on Sunday, 21st June at 6:00 am. The trip was long but we reached the Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Camp at about 4:00 pm. Other schools were already there. There was a short orientation and we were shown our cabin which was very well appointed with ample heaters, a fridge and a kitchenette. There was plenty of room for everyone and the teachers had their own area. Once we had selected our rooms and dumped our gear, we were outfitted for the snow with skis/snowboard, boots, stocks, jacket, pants, gloves, helmet and goggles. Dinner and breakfast were served in the mess hall and evening entertainment was there as well, and lunch was provided at the snow. The food was great and plentiful but with about 220 Year 11 students, the

queue was often long (not for the

teachers because they always pushed in!). We were on the early ski program so

we had to be up and at breakfast by 6:15 am each day, then pack all our gear into the bus for a 7:00 am start to Bullock’s flat and the Ski Tube to Blue Cow snow fields. The snow fields open at 8:30. Monday and Tuesday had perfect weather – clear skies, no wind and quite warm, so many of us were stripping off layers very early. Each day we had instructors for the first 2 hours, smoko, then a ‘free ski’ session when Mr Gladys would take the skiers and Miss McKenzie would take the snowboarders for some additional practice on the intermediate slopes (Mr Nunan was still learning to stop on the ‘toddler’s slope’ after skittling several skiers earlier). Lunch followed, then more free ski time until 2:30pm when we headed back to the Sport & Rec. camp. All the students mastered ski/snowboard techniques very quickly, but Mr Nunan was relegated to the remedial group. Wednesday was overcast and a bit windy, but still good and the snow was getting compacted and hard. Wednesday night saw a good dump of 16 cm fresh snow and it continued to snow all day Thursday which made skiing and snowboarding a bit difficult because of poor visibility, but it was magic to see real snow fall. We started back to Bulahdelah early on Friday and arrived back at about 4:30 pm. A fabulous time was had by all and there were no serious injuries.
