There is some repertoire in the classical

canon that every company wants

to embrace, and Giselle certainly

makes that list. At a time when several

choreographers are revisiting and

reinterpreting this archetypal tale, it’s

a fitting moment to relish in the beauty

and splendour of the traditional ballet.

Giselle is a formidable showcase for

Shanghai Ballet, whose entire ensemble

exudes the highest level of technique and

performance. Not only are we enraptured

by the love and tragedy of this fateful

story, we are immersed in the virtuosic

talents of these stellar dancers. It’s such

a thrill to welcome this beautiful company

to perform with the National Arts

Centre Orchestra in our brand new

Southam Hall.

About the Company À propos de la compagnieShanghai Ballet was founded in 1979 based

on The White-Haired Girl performing group.

It won a Gold Medal for the Best Classical

Dance Works of the 20th Century in China,

and helped establish the Company as one

of the country’s leading ensembles.

With a history spanning thirty-seven

years, the Shanghai Ballet has created and

staged a number of productions including

Echoes of Eternity and Jane Eyre (Patrick

de Bana), The Butterfly Lovers (Xin Lili),

A Sigh of Love (Bertrand d’At), The Last

Mission of Marco Polo (José Martínez), and

Shanghai Grand Theatre’s version of The

Nutcracker (Derek Deane). The repertoire

of the company also includes Swan Lake

and Romeo and Juliet (Derek Deane),

Coppelia (Pierre Lacotte), La Sylphide

(Jean-Paul Gravier), The Nutcracker

(Tetsutaro Shimizu), Don Quixote,

Balanchine and Beyond, and the Ode to Joy

– Gala Performance.

Since its founding, the young dancers

of the company have won a total of 45

medals in various international dance

competitions.

The Shanghai Ballet is active in

cooperation and artistic exchanges with

artists and companies both at home and

abroad. The company has toured not only

throughout China but in many countries all

over the world, including the U.S.A., U.K,

Canada, France, Spain, Norway, Australia,

New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Indonesia,

Singapore, Thailand, Finland, Hong Kong,

Macao, and Taiwan, among others.

SynopsisAct IThe ballet opens in a small village. Count

Albrecht, a young nobleman, has fallen

in love with a shy and beautiful peasant

girl, Giselle, despite being betrothed to

Bathilde, the daughter of the Duke of

Courtland. Albrecht disguises himself as a

humble villager called Loys in order to woo

the innocent Giselle, who knows nothing of

his true identity. Albrecht hides his attire

and sword before coaxing Giselle out of

her house to romance her as the harvest

festivities begin.

Hilarion, a local huntsman and

gamekeeper, is also in love with Giselle

and is highly suspicious of Loys. He tries

to convince the naive Giselle that her beau

cannot be trusted, but she ignores his

warnings. Giselle’s mother, Berthe, is very

protective of her daughter, as Giselle has

a weak heart that leaves her in delicate

health. She discourages a relationship

between Giselle and Loys.

The villagers welcome a party of

noblemen seeking refreshment after the

hunt. Bathilde is charmed by Giselle’s

sweet and demure nature, not knowing of

her relationship with Albrecht. Giselle is

honored when the beautiful stranger offers

her a necklace before the group of nobles

depart.

The villagers continue the harvest

festivities, and Albrecht emerges again

to dance with Giselle, who is named the

Harvest Queen. Hilarion interrupts the

festivities. He has discovered Albrecht’s

sword and presents it as proof that the

peasant boy is really a nobleman who

is promised to another woman. Using

Albrecht’s hunting horn, Hilarion calls back

the party of noblemen. Albrecht has no

by the revelation and Giselle becomes

inconsolable when faced with her lover’s

deception. Knowing that they can never be

together, Giselle flies into a mad fit of grief.

She begins to dance erratically, causing

her weak heart to give out. She dies in

Albrecht’s arms.

Act IILate at night, Hilarion mourns at Giselle’s

grave in the forest, but is frightened away

by the arrival of the Wilis, the ghostly

spirits of maidens betrayed by their lovers.

The Wilis, led by their merciless queen

Myrtha, haunt the forest at night to seek

revenge on any man they encounter,

forcing their victims to dance until they die

of exhaustion.

Myrtha and the Wilis rouse Giselle’s

spirit from her grave and induct her into

their clan before disappearing into the

forest. Albrecht arrives to lay flowers on

Giselle’s grave and he weeps with guilt

over her death. Giselle’s spirit appears and

Albrecht begs her forgiveness. Giselle, her

love undiminished, gently forgives him. She

disappears to join the rest of the Wilis and

Albrecht desperately follows her.

Meanwhile, the Wilis have cornered

Hilarion. They use their magic to force him

to dance until he is nearly dead, and then

drown him in a nearby lake. Then they

turn on Albrecht, sentencing him to death

as well. Giselle’s pleas are dismissed and

Albrecht is forced to dance until sunrise.

However, the power of Giselle’s love

counters the Wilis’s magic and spares his

d’Albrecht, Hilarion rappelle le groupe

XIN LILIDirector of the Shanghai Ballet & National First-class Dancer

Admitted to the Shanghai Ballet Dance

School in 1973, Xin Lili majored in ballet

before graduating with honors in 1980.

After graduation, she was assigned to

the Shanghai Ballet, rising to become

a principal dancer. In 2000, Xin was

appointed Artistic Associate of the

Shanghai Ballet and Artistic Director in

July 2001. She was appointed Director of

the Shanghai Ballet in September 2011.

With a pure, graceful, and lyrical

temperament, Xin appeared onstage

dancing principal roles in in Swan Lake,

Giselle, Don Quixote, Romeo & Juliet,

as well as in the Chinese ballets The

White-Haired Girl, Thunderstorm, Song

of Youth, Soul, and The Butterfly Lovers.

As a choreographer, she has shown her

talent in the modern pas de deux Twine.

Xin won the Silver Medal at the New York

International Ballet Competition in 1987.

She won 1st Grand Prix Couple in the Third

Paris International Dance Competition

Ballet en 1973, Xin Lili obtient son diplôme

La Valse to the company’s repertoire. In

2006, the company created the Chinese

modern ballet A Sigh of Love. In 2010,

the company created The Last Mission of

Marco Polo and The Nutcracker

(Shanghai Grand Theatre version). In 2012,

the company created the modern ballet

Jane Eyre.

In 2001, Xin created and

choreographed The Butterfly Lovers which

premiered at the closing ceremony of the

Shanghai International Arts Festival.

From 2001 to 2016, Xin served as a

jury member for numerous international

competitions. In June 2010, she was invited

to attend the 60th Anniversary of the

British National Ballet and performed as

the Mother in Swan Lake.

Xin Lili was a jury member of the 2nd

Beijing International Ballet Competition in

2013 and of the Cape Town International

Competition in 2014.

WU HUSHENGFirst Principal Dancer & National First-class Dancer

Entering the Shanghai Dance School in

1997, Wu became a dancer of the Shanghai

Ballet after his graduation in 2003.

He has danced main roles in Swan Lake,

The Nutcracker, Coppelia, La Sylphide,

Romeo and Juliet, Jane Eyre, Giselle,

prix de couple à la troisième édition du

Concours international de danse de Paris

(classique) avec son partenaire Yang Xinhua.

New York International Ballet Competition,

he won the Silver (no gold medal was

awarded) and the Igor Youskevitch Award.

He won the Gold Medal at the fourth

Shanghai International Ballet Competition

in 2007, and the Shanghai Literature

and Art Award in 2008. Together with

his partner Ji Pingping, he performed

at the special Gala performance in July

2009. He won the Dramatic Silver Prize

at the seventh China Dance Competition

in 2009; the Annual Best Potential from

the Municipal Propaganda Department

in 2010; the Dramatic Silver Prize of

the eighth China Dance Competition in

2011; the Outstanding Young Dancers of

2011from the Shanghai Dance Association

in 2011; the Shanghai National Labor

Medal and Young Talent of Shanghai Arts

Culture in 2012. He performed in Nijinsky

with the Hamburg State Opera in 2012.

Wu Husheng was named Best Male Dancer

at the ninth China Lotus Dance Award

1989, Fan became a dancer of the Shanghai

She won the Silver Prize in the Junior

Division at the first Shanghai International

Ballet Competition in 1995; the title of

“Shanghai New Star of Culture” in 1999;

the Gold Medal in the Senior Division

at the 19th Varna International Ballet

Competition, Bulgaria, in 2000; as well

as the second Prize and Best Pas de

Deux Award at the second Shanghai

International Ballet Competition with

her partner Sun Shenyi in 2001. She was

guest principal dancer at the Australia

National Ballet in 2004-2005, and was

invited to perform in the first Asia Ballet

Festival in Seoul in 2006. Together with

Sun Shenyi, she performed at the special

Gala performance in February 2008. She

won the Special Price of the Organization

Committee at the eighth China Dance

Competition in 2011. She won the Shanghai

MARIUS PETIPAChoreographer

Marius Petipa (1818–1910) was a French

and Russian ballet dancer, pedagogue and

choreographer. Petipa is considered to

be the most influential ballet master and

choreographer in ballet history.

Marius Petipa is noted for his long

career as First Ballet Master of the St.

Petersburg Imperial Theatres, making him

Ballet Master and principal choreographer

of the Imperial Ballet (precursor of the

Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet), a position he

held from 1871 until 1903. Petipa created

over fifty ballets, some of which have

survived in versions either faithful to,

inspired by, or reconstructed from the

original. Among these works, he is most

noted for The Pharaoh’s Daughter (1862);

Don Quixote (1869); La Bayadère (1877);

Le Talisman (1889); The Sleeping Beauty

(1890); The Nutcracker (1892); Le Réveil de

Flore (1894); La Halte de cavalerie (1896);

Raymonda (1898); Les Saisons (1900), and

Les Millions d’Arlequin (a.k.a. Harlequinade)

(1900).

Petipa revived a substantial number of

works created by other choreographers.

Many of these revivals would go on to

become the definitive editions on which all

subsequent productions would be based.

The most famous of these revivals were Le

Corsaire, Giselle, La Esmeralda, Coppélia,

La Fille Mal Gardée, The Little Humpbacked

Horse and Swan Lake.

MARIUS PETIPAChorégraphe

ADOLPHE ADAMComposer

Adolphe Charles Adam (1803 –1856) was

a French composer and music critic. A

prolific composer of operas and ballets, he

is best known today for his ballets Giselle

(1841) and Le corsaire (1856, his last work),

his operas Le postillon de Lonjumeau

(1836), Le toréador (1849) and Si j’étais

roi (1852) and his Christmas carol Minuit,

chrétiens! (1844), later set to different

English lyrics and widely sung as “O Holy

Night” (1847). Adam was a noted teacher,

who taught Delibes and other influential

composers.

SHAO WENWEISet Designer, National First-class Set Designer, Former Senior Set Designer of Shanghai Ballet

Shao Wenwei graduated from Shanghai

Theatre Academy in 1964 and joined

Shanghai Ballet in 1979. During his time

with the company, he created many major

works like The White-Haired Girl, Thunder

over the Miao Ridge, and Giselle, among

others. Apart from ballets, Shao Wenwei

also designed for some famous Chinese

films. His designing credits include: The

Opium Wars, A Bing, The Rubber King,

and more.

OLEKSIY BAKLANGuest Conductor

Oleksiy Baklan was born in Kiev in 1961 into

a family of renowned soloist dancers with

the Kiev Opera. In 1987, he graduated from

the Kiev State Conservatory, where he

studied conducting under Stefan Turchak.

For his degree, he conducted Giselle at the

Hamilton Ballet Orchestra (Canada), the

Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas in

in Madrid, and the Orquesta Sinfónica de

Galicia in Spain. His repertoire includes

ballets such as Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake,

Stefan Turchak. Pour l’obtention de son

diplôme, il dirige Giselle à l’Opéra de Kiev.

Depuis, il est le chef d’orchestre attitré

de l’Opéra national d’Ukraine. De 1995 à

2008, il est chef d’orchestre principal de

l’Orchestre municipal des jeunes de Kiev,

dont il est devenu le directeur artistique

il y a quatre ans. En 2009, on lui décerne

le titre d’Artiste du peuple de l’Ukraine.

Depuis 2007, il est chef invité du Nouveau

Théâtre national de Tokyo et, depuis

2010, du Corella Ballet en Espagne. Au

cours des dernières années, il a travaillé

avec le Nouvel Orchestre philharmonique

de Tokyo, l’Orchestre philharmonique

de Nagoya, le Hamilton Ballet Orchestra
