Home reading 25 nights – Over the last 2 weeks we have presented 101 students with their Bronze Reading Award for doing 25 nights of home reading. As well as this there are another 10 waiting to be presented on Friday. This means that over half the school has achieved this award. Congratulations to our readers and to their families who have supported them through the process.

PACER - Students from our school will soon be undertaking an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Attendance – This year schools have been set a student attendance target. Our target is to have all our students attend for at least 90% of school days. Most of our students already achieve well above this. We aren’t suggesting (and never have) that parents send sick children to school – that just means they share the illness around and everyone gets sick. What we want to try to reduce is days off when the child isn’t really sick. – my Mum used to call it “disappearing 9.30am sickness”. KN have been the first class to earn our attendance trophy. Last week they had an attendance rate of 99.11%. Obviously the vomiting bug doing the rounds didn’t get to KN.

Late arrivals to school are something that we need parents to help us with. Students who arrive late miss the opportunity to re-engage with their friends during the before school socialising time, miss important lesson instructions and then take teacher time away from the rest of the class to get them settled in to the lesson.

Road safety - The school is continuing to work with the authorities to do something about the dangerous intersection at Rupert and Todd Streets. Department of Education representatives came earlier this week to look at the intersection and they will be liaising on our behalf with Lake Macquarie City Council. Drivers should be warned that we are expecting an increased ranger presence in the area. Fines and demerit points are higher in school zone areas.

• Disobey ‘No Stopping” sign $344 and 2 demerit points • Drive on nature strip $457 and 4 demerit points

Cross Country Carnival The Cross Country will be held on Friday 27th March and will involve all primary students from: 3M, 4-5H, 5-6K and 5-6W. Age races will be held progressively throughout the morning starting at 9:15am, with 8/9 year olds. Races will conclude by 11:00am and be followed by normal classes.

Our Zone team selection will be based on student times achieved on the day as well as their demonstrated ability and effort throughout the training sessions.

Students are to wear normal school sports uniform ready to run the course. A separate note was sent home today with further details.

We would greatly appreciate volunteers for this event. Your job would include monitoring the course, ensuring participants are running the correct course safely and assisting at the start/finish lines.
