Shake it up!!

Adapted with much gratitude from Lessons From The Classroom by Hal Urban

What are social skills?

Any skill that makes it easier to effectively interact and

communicate with others.

When you meet someone…

• Eye contact• FIRM handshake (No dead fish)• Smile• Speak clearly

Be positive with people and you’ll get positive results.

-Ken Blanchard

When students feel welcome and connected, they feel more at home, more like they belong. This is critically important because everyone functions better in a comfortable environment.

-Professor Joseph Napier

VERBAL POISON

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can break my heart.

- Robert Fulghum

Words go into the body. So they can cause us to be well and hopeful and happy and high-energy and wondrous and funny and cheerful. Or they can cause us to be depressed. They get into the body and cause us to be sullen and sour and depressed and, finally sick.

- Maya Angelou

It all starts with the teacher!!

Good teachers create a caring community.

High ExpectationsHigh Standards

“What you accept you teach.”

“What you permit, you promote.”

Proactive vs. Reactive

Proactive- taking a positive step up front to head off trouble without waiting for something negative to happen and then reacting to it.

Reactive- waiting for something negative to happen and then reacting to it.

True or False??Students don’t care

how much you know until they know

how much you care.

Why kids need to KNOW and CARE ABOUT each other.

• Peer culture is a powerful influence on student behavior.

• Teachers must shape a positive peer culture

• Avoid creating a culture that allows students to think that cruel words and intolerant behavior will be tolerated without consequences

Why kids need to KNOW and CARE ABOUT each other.

• Children need caring attachments to adults and to each other.

• They are more likely to accept the values and rules of the group when they feel accepted and affirmed.

Why kids need to KNOW and CARE ABOUT each other.

• When students are part of a caring community in the classroom, they learn morality by living it.

• When they receive respect and care, and practice giving it in return, respect and care gradually become habits---part of their character.

“I need” vs. “May I please have”

3 Ways of Communicating

1- Words: about 10 – 15% of our message

2- Tone of voice: about 40% of our message

3- Body Language: about 45 - 50% of our message

The Golden Rule

• Treat other people the way you would like them to treat you.

• Don’t do to others what you don’t want them to do to you.

Discussion Question

If the Golden Rule is so easy to understand, why don’t more people practice it?

Take the Pledge

This year I pledge to treat all members of the Carl Sandburg Middle School community with respect at all times. I will be mindful of the power of words and do my best to promote a caring school community.
