S hady Canyon Golf Club is one of the finest clubs in the country and is located in one of the most scenic settings in Orange County. Rugged and unspoiled, this stunning landscape blesses us with a one-of-a-kind backdrop each time we set foot on the property.
However, Membership in Shady Canyon Golf Club is about much more than the location – it is about the sense
of belonging, the personalized service, the memories made with our friends and family, and a lifestyle that most
dream about.
I am very proud to introduce the new Shady Canyon Lifestyle Magazine to our Members and prospective
members. It is our intention to share the Shady Canyon lifestyle in a new format that clearly reveals what
life is like behind the gates. The first edition of the magazine is very
much an overview of all the amenities and benefits we as Members have
at our pleasure. I encourage you to read the magazine with the thought
of passing it along to someone who may have inquired about the Club.
As Members, we are stewards of the Club; our friends, family members
and acquaintances often look to us for information about the Club. This
magazine is the perfect communication tool.
warm regards,

Dear Member,
The Holiday Season is quickly approaching; the Board of Directors has established the custom, as in most Private Clubs, of rewarding employees who have enjoyed serving you throughout the year. Contributing to Shady Canyon Golf Club’s Employee Holiday Fund enables you, our Members, to express your additional appreciation for services, and ensures a fair and practical distribution of Holiday funds among our employees. For the benefit of the Club's employees (management excluded), we invite you to participate by contributing to our Holiday Fund.
To establish this fund, $100 has been added to your October statement. For those of
you who use the Club frequently you might prefer to contribute more. The fund is purely optional; if you would like to increase or decrease your contribution please inform our Controller, Michael O’Heany at [email protected] or 949.856.7022.
The Board of Directors and the staff at Shady Canyon Golf Club sincerely thank you
and wish all of our Members a Happy Holiday Season!
Sincerely,
President, Board of Directors

Shady Canyon Golf Club embodies the perfect relationship
between a golf course and its surrounding environment.
The Tom Fazio design, set on 300 ruggedly beautiful acres,
evokes a timeless quality, masterfully blending with the
contours of the land to create a property whose true purpose
has been discovered.
This spectacular setting is the heart of Shady Canyon Golf
Club, providing an intimate, secluded retreat for families
and friends to gather and enjoy the best of what a private golf
club can offer. Shady Canyon’s golf facilities are unrivaled
by any golf club throughout the country.

Professional InstructionShady Canyon Golf Club offers the best possible
instruction. A full staff of highly regarded PGA and LPGA
professionals and apprentices provides personal and group
lessons, allowing every Member to benefit from teachers
thoroughly versed in the game.
Practice FacilitiesA full-service practice range featuring practice bunkers
and a large chipping green presents the ideal setting to
fine-tune your golf game. There is also a quiet, secluded
area specifically created to practice chipping, pitching and
short yardage golf shots. Two large putting greens, situated
near the Clubhouse, provide almost every conceivable putt
encountered on the golf course.
Hole after hole, the course deepens in intrigue and
challenge. The front nine dips in and out of rocky ravines;
there are some areas of the course that feel completely
isolated. The back nine roughly follows Shady Creek
deep into the canyon and incorporates stands of graceful
sycamores. Several holes are nestled against the nature
preserve and include an abundance of trees and rock
outcroppings. The course ascends natural hillsides before
heading back toward the Clubhouse.
From one day to the next, Shady Canyon never feels or
plays the same - high praise for any course. As Fazio said,
“Because of the vastness of size and scale, the amount
of acres, the natural environment, rock outcroppings,
vegetation and open space views, the potential for golf at
Shady Canyon is just sensational.”

Recognized by his peers as the world’s preeminent
golf course architect, Tom Fazio participates in
only the finest projects. Shady Canyon is another
credit to his world-famous portfolio, and the
course has garnished multiple awards from the
press, including a current number 13 ranking in
California by Golf Digest.

The Fazio philosophy: In creating his courses, Fazio
honors a commitment to quality as well as the unique
character and natural beauty of each setting. Shady
Canyon’s golf course perfectly reflects Tom Fazio’s
philosophy. He gracefully melds the course into the
natural terrain providing golfers of all abilities an exciting
challenge and a sense of tradition and greatness.
About Tom FazioThroughout his 40+ years in golf course design,
Tom Fazio and his staff of talented designers have
been recognized for creating award-winning courses
throughout the United States. No living designer has
more credits on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100
Greatest Golf Courses and Golfweek’s collection of
America’s Best. The Golf Digest poll for Best Modern
Day Golf Course Architect was discontinued after Tom
claimed the award three consecutive times, and he has
also received The Old Tom Morris Award from the Golf
Course Superintendents Association of America.
Fazio attributes this success to maintaining a team
concept in design shared by the senior associates on his
staff, some of whom have worked with Tom for more
than 30 years. This visionary group, with a diverse base
of knowledge and united love for the game of golf,
enable Fazio Golf Course Designers to continue to
create courses that are noted throughout the industry for
their excellence.
Fazio emphasizes the premise that “Golf courses
should reflect the natural beauty of their environments.”
Maintaining that principle, Fazio Golf Course Designers
strive to follow design priorities that include creating
harmonious transitions from existing topographical
conditions, developing courses that offer golfers of
varying skill a challenging yet enjoyable experience, and
providing each member and guest with optimum use of
the property.

I had the opportunity to sit down with the Duck’s CEO to get his insight and thoughts regarding the Ducks, basketball and membership at Shady Canyon.
What was it l ike being
CEO of a team that won
the coveted Stanley Cup?
Unbelievable is the first word that
comes to mind. It was my second
year as CEO with the Ducks, we had
made it to the Conference Finals the
year before, but I was still not ready.
The atmosphere at the rink and in
the community was at a heightened
level that I have never experienced
before. Every win was exhilarating
and every loss was upsetting, so it
became an emotional roller-coaster.
In the meantime the business side
of hockey continued and each game
was a major event that needed
massive organization. Even after
we won there were numerous major
business decisions that needed to
be made including opening up
our season three months later in
London.
How did this season go?
We had a bad start and we ended up
playing catch up all season. Midway
through the season Getz, one of our
star players got hurt and then at the
end of the season our star goalie
got hurt, so we always seemed to be
behind. WE managed, however, to
finish strong and moved ourselves from
12th to 4th place and into playoffs.
Unfortunately, we lost in the first
round but it was a pretty good season
considering all the problems that we
had.
Besides being responsible
for the hockey s ide of
things you also have
responsibility over the
arena, what is that like and
how does that work?
The Honda Center puts on close to
200 events a year so hockey represents
about 30% of the overall activities.
The venue was recently listed as one of
the five most successful arenas in North
America. We have recently had such
diverse events such as the NCAA Sweet
Sixteen, Roger Waters, Disney on Ice,
professional bull riding, Lady Gaga and
UFC fighting so there is rarely a dull
moment. For most of the events we
share the revenue and expenses with
the act and hopefully at the end of the
day we make some money.
Having grown up in
Sacramento, and leaving at
the height of the King’s
success , I was excited when
the Maloof brothers were
looking to move the Kings
to Orange County. Is that
going to happen?
Not next season but one day soon we
will have professional basketball at
the Honda Center. The Kings have
decided to stay in Sacramento and
see if the city will help in building a
more up-to-date arena. If not they
could be back looking for a new
place to play, like Orange County.
We made a number of presentations
to the NBA and they were quite
impressed with our building and
area. There is no question in my
mind that professional basketball
will be successful in Orange County
and that someday soon we will get
a team. The economic effect on our
local businesses will be enormous.
With all that you’re
involved with, how do you
find time to use the Club?
My schedule is quite busy with
many aspects of the Honda Center
as well as the charitable foundations
my family and I are involved in.
When I first joined the Club, I used
it mostly for business and setting up
tee times around business meetings.
When you’re a new member, you
don’t know many people, however
since then I’ve enjoyed getting to
know other members. I also like
that the Golf Shop can setup a
tee time for me to play with short
notice. I’ve found this a great way to
meet new people.

On June 24, Shady Canyon Golf Club will celebrate its 8th Annual Wine & Art Festival.
This perennial sell-out event is considered one of the best events of the year by many of
our Members.
The festival is situated under an airy canopy on our Great Event Lawn with sweeping
views of the Golf Course and the rugged hillside.
Pick up your wine glass and a map of the wineries and be transported to the wine
country. Over 50 wineries from all over the world will be ready to pour you a taste
of their wonderful wines. Maybe start the evening with a glass of Champagne from
Taittinger or a Blanc de Blancs from Schramsberg.
Of course, there are all the well-known wineries like Chateau Montelena, Darioush,
Dominus, Far Niente, Flowers, Grgich Hills, Pahlmeyer, Patz & Hall, Paul Hobbs,
Rombauer, Silver Oak, Stag’s Leap and many more.

Last year, four of our Member-owned wineries were also present: Fazeli
Cellars, Landy Family Vineyards, Layer Cake and Moment of Truth.
Now, it is time to explore some up-and-coming wineries. Have you heard
of Alpha Omega, Orin Swift, Redmon, Salvestrin or Tres Sabores; why
not try some new wine regions – Croatia anyone?
If you are running low on wine glasses or decanters, you will have the
opportunity to purchase the latest from Austrian glassmaker, Riedel.
As the day turns into night and an amber glow takes over the mood,
mingle with your friends to the sounds of live entertainment. Stop by
the exquisite food stations, created by Chef Dominique and his culinary
team. Get a taste of sea bass and shrimp mousse en-croute, mini abalone
with ginger butter, curried scallops with nectarine salsa, duck confit and
foie gras tamales, carved Napa Valley leg of lamb, grilled beef tenderloin,
international and domestic cheeses, freshly prepared sushi and delectable
desserts.
On the north side of the event area, you will find our artists’ wall. In the
past years several artists like wine painter Thomas Arvid, plein air artists
Val Carson and Lynn Wiederman, photographer John Connell, sculptor
and painter Andrew Myers, sculptor Daniel Oropeza, official Grammy
artist Todd White and others displayed their works.

Ingredients1 lb. spagettini pasta
Seafood:12 Alaskan snow crab claws8 oz. squid ring8 jumbo shrimp cut into 8 pieces
Pomodoro Sauce:1 lb. cherry tomatoes (remove stems and cut in half)½ lb. Roma tomatoes peeled, no seeds (diced ½”)2 oz. minced shallots1 oz. minced garlic½ cup white wine4 tablespoon olive oil1 large buffalo mozzarella ball (diced ½”)½ cup fresh basil (cut in julienne)saltpepperchili flakes4 tablespoon grapeseed oil for cooking
Preparation For the Spaghettini:Boil 6 quarts of water with 2 tbsp. of salt. When water
is boiling, add pasta and stir. Return to a boil, stirring
the pasta occasionally, and let cook until al dente
(7 minutes). Strain spaghettini and then drizzle 2 tbsp.
of olive oil on it. Keep the pasta warm over a double
boiler.
I recommend De Cecco brand #11, but any kind will work
For the Seafood:Make sure to use a sauté pan big enough to sauté all
of the seafood. On high heat, season the seafood with
salt, pepper and chili flakes. When the pan is very hot,
add the grapeseed oil and then start by sautéing the
crab claws, about 1 minute on each side. Next, add the
shrimp pieces and continue to sauté on high heat for 1
or 2 minutes. Finally, add the squid ring and continue
to sauté until it turns opaque.
Remove all seafood from the pan and place in a
colander. Keeping the pan very hot, add shallots and
all the tomatoes at the same time. Stir well, add garlic
and white wine and let cook for a few minutes. Add
half of the mozzarella and let cook until melted. Add
half of the basil julienne, then return seafood to the
pot and mix well with pomodoro sauce. When all of
the seafood is hot, remove the crab claws and set aside,
then add spaghettini and mix again. Check seasonings.
Serve the Spaghettini Divide spaghettini and seafood into four pasta bowls
and place extra seafood around the spaghettini. Add 3
crab claws on top and then sprinkle with the rest of the
julienne of basil and the remaining buffalo mozzarella.
Drizzle with the olive oil and serve.

Shady Canyon Golf Club is nestled in a unique area in
Orange County, and although the Club is not easily seen
by the public at large, our Members are deeply imbedded
in the community.
Creating a Shady Canyon Golf Club Charitable Foundation
was unanimously supported by the Club Board of Directors.
“Our Members are very active in the community, and with
our own Charitable Foundation our Members have the
privilege of supporting local charities through their very
own 501(c)(3),” says Steve Buck, General Manager.
One of the advantages of having a foundation within the
Club is that we are able to carefully select and assess the
charities we wish to support. The Charitable Foundation
Board of Directors has determined it will concentrate on
families in crisis, children in need, the elderly and terminally
ill, the homeless and promoting literacy and education.
Having a direct relationship with selected organizations
makes the joy of giving that much more personal and
rewarding. Knowing that your community is benefitting
from your Club’s involvement provides a sense of pride
and camaraderie amongst Members.
The flexibility to create and organize fundraising within
the Club allows the process to be not only fun, but done
in a fashion that is comfortable for our Members. One
charitable golf tournament and gala will be held each year,
while, smaller more intimate events may be held throughout
the year.
If you would like to learn more about the Charitable
Foundation or how you can get involved, please contact

As you walk down the halls and corridors, you are constantly

At Shady Canyon, we strive to make those memories as

Wedding Bells

By Alexis Wensman, Director of Catering
Wedding fashion has evolved over the years.
Today’s bride likes to think “out of the box.”
The thought of mixing up what would be a typical
wedding standard is paramount. Square, wooden
dance floors might now be diamond-shaped white
vinyl. Round tables have become passé. The most
creative bride chooses table groupings of square and
rectangle tables.
One of the most interesting trends is the addition of
late night cocktail parties. At Shady Canyon, we call
it the “after party.” The cake has been cut and some
of your guests have left for home. Why not move the
remaining guests to another space, which is decorated
with hip lounge furniture and rotating LED lights, for
continued dancing with your most intimate friends?
Another trend is to create a lounge around your dance
floor with the dining tables on the outskirts of the site.
Once your guests have finished their meals and are
dancing the night away, they can bring their drinks over
to the fun furniture and enjoy the rest of the evening in
a more casual, communal setting.
Lighting is an important element that is often the last
detail a bride considers. It is what creates the ambiance
for the evening. From soft candles to create romantic
warmth to Gobos swirling around the dance floor in
bright colors and inventive shapes, make your color
unexpected. One recent bride changed the lighting
color in the room with each dinner course, which added
excitement throughout the meal.
It is the small details that are often the most fun to
create. Whether it’s napkins tied with a strand of
37 | S H A D Y C A N Y O N G O L F C L U B . C O M
crystals or a sprig of rosemary placed on top of the
napkin, give your guests something to talk about.
Consider pictures of you and your fiancée – from
early childhood to present - in eclectic frames on
each dining table. Your guests are there because
they care about you, and they will love to reminisce
as they share the photos.
We strive to make the planning process simple and
seamless for our brides. We want you to relax and
enjoy the experience of designing your special day.
As a Catering Director and Wedding Coordinator for
some 20 years, I offer a list of preferred vendors who
are some of the top designers in Orange County.
All vendors are familiar with the Club and work
cohesively together. We can offer you a one-stop
place for planning as your vendors come to meet
with you at the Club. Truly the most effective way
to plan the event is to have everyone involved meet
together to discuss each person’s role in making
your day perfect.

Shady Canyon Golf Club is honored to have had one of its
own American flags flown in Afghanistan. The American
flag left Shady Canyon on January 25, 2011, and was flown
over the 1st Marine Division (Forward) Headquarters, Camp
Leatherneck, in the Helmand province of Afghanistan
during Operation Enduring Freedom on February 8. The
base of where the flag was flown is a memorial to the
Marines that have been killed in action in the area. The
accompanying flag was dedicated and flown courtesy of Lt.
Col. David C. Weir, USMC and Lt. Col. Grant Williams,
USMC Reserves, in honor of Shady Canyon Golf Club.Photographs: Shady Canyon Golf Club’s American flag at Camp Leatherneck (Top). Dedication Certificate by Lt. Col. David C. Weir, USMC and Lt. Col. Grant Williams, USMC Reserves (Above).
This special American Flag will be raised and flown for
distinguished events and holidays to honor our men
and women in the armed services.

Flag flown in Afghanistan re turns to Shady Canyon Golf Club
Summer is the busiest and most energetic time of the year. The golf
course, Clubhouse and pool are filled with the sounds of friends and
families creating memories and traditions at the Club. With events
that range from family friendly and informal to adult-oriented and
elegant, there is sure to be something for everyone.

Summer Golf Camps Golf is one of the most difficult and most rewarding
games that can be played competitively as well as socially.
It is a sport unlike most that can be played well through
adulthood. It is also a game of honor, integrity and
sportsmanship – attributes every parent hopes his or her
children will embody. The game of golf teaches us values
that will carry into our daily lives and help mold each
player into a better person as well as a better golfer. Of
course, no one would play if it wasn’t also fun. During
the summer, Shady Canyon Golf Camps are available for
children ages 6 to 16 of every skill level.
4th of July 5kLace up your running shoes and join your fellow Members
to kick off the 4th of July weekend with our Second
Annual 5K around the golf course. Bring the kids and
come dressed in your patriotic gear. Following the event,
stay and enjoy a wonderful pancake breakfast.
All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Shady
Canyon Charitable Foundation.
Thursday Poolside CookoutsLooking for a way to enjoy the long summer days and
a casual way to dine with your family during the week?
Well, grab the kids and the swimsuits and head over to
the pool for our weekly Thursday Night Barbecues. Chef
Dominique and his staff will prepare an extensive dinner
that is sure to please even the pickiest eater.
Regular dinner menu is also available in the Mixed Grill.
Dive-in Movies and Movies on the LawnNot your typical night at the movies – ours are so much
more fun! During the summer, another way to enjoy the
fantastic weather is by enjoying a movie outdoors. On
two Sundays during the summer, we offer dinner and a
movie outside - either poolside where children can watch
from floating pool toys or on the Great Event Lawn
cuddled up in blankets. Dinner, popcorn, beverages and
a sundae bar are provided both evenings. In the weeks
leading up to movie night, three choices are announced,
allowing children to get involved and vote for the movie
of their choice.
Summer Campout The Shady Canyon Campout is quickly becoming one of
the most popular and well-attended events at the Club.
It’s a good thing it’s held on one of the longest holes on
the course! This is a family-friendly event that the adults
may enjoy even more than the kids. Members, their
children and friends line up earlier and earlier each year
to get a prime piece of real estate to pitch their tents. The
day is filled with music, campground games, and a chuck
wagon barbecue. As day turns into evening, everyone
gathers around the campfire for s’mores, singing and
maybe even a nightcap.
