On Friday May 9, 2014 Keep Pearland Beautiful will host the annual Environmental Awards Dinner at the Pearland Community Center. This annual event, attended by local elected officials and members of the community, is the culmination of the Great American Cleanup, a 3-month celebration in the City of Pearland of environmental education and environmental awareness, and our effort to make everyday Earth Day.

Keep Pearland Beautiful will honor members of the community who began a green and sustainable movement in the City of Pearland and who continue to help KPB fulfill its mission to make Pearland the cleanest, most beautiful city in Texas.

The evening culminates with the presentation of the Stella Roberts Golden Pear Award, given to members of the community who have made lasting contributions to improving or protecting the environment. Last year, KPB presented the award to Ms. Helen Beckman, former Councilwoman and current member of the Advisory Committee.

Sponsors for the event include Shadow Creek Ranch, H-E-B Plus! Store in Pearland, A&A Cleaning Services, and Casa Ole.

The Alvin ISD School Board Election will be held on May 10, and the following positions are up for election this year: Position 6 currently held by Sue Stringer and Position 7, which is currently held by Charles McCauley.

Stringer, who has served since 2011, has filed for re-election of her current position against Earl Humbird, a former school board member, who previously served the District and community members for 9 years. McCauley did not file for re-election. Chad Dudley and Vivian Scheibel are running for Position 7.

School district trustees are elected by popular vote, and serve three-year staggered terms so that the entire board is not up for election at the same time. School board members receive no compensation. Early voting in the school board election begins on Monday, April 28, and continues until Tuesday, May 6 at locations throughout Brazoria County.

The key roles and responsibilities of the School Board are to ensure creation of a vision and goals for the District, and evaluate district success; adopt policies that guide district actions, oversee and evaluate the superintendent’s progress and success; approve annual budgets consistent with the vision of the District; and communicate the District’s vision and success to the community.

To be eligible for election, a local school board candidate must be 1) a qualified and registered voter 2) a resident of the Alvin ISD for six months before the filing deadline (February 28, 2014), and 3) a resident of Texas for 12 months before the filing deadline.

For additional information about the school board election, contact the school district offices at 281-388-1130.

On Friday, April 4 Jennifer Gallagher, Nolan Ryan Junior High teacher, was named a finalist for the 2014 H-E-B Excellence in Education Rising Star Award. She is one of six teachers in Texas to receive an Excellence in Education award. H-E-B officials surprised Gallagher with a visit to her classroom that included cake, balloons, flowers and a $1,000 check for her personal use, along with a $1,000 check for her campus to use for the students.

As the H-E-B officials entered Gallagher’s class, her students cheered in excitement. “This was such an honor,” mentioned Gallagher.

Gallagher, who is also the current District Teacher of the Year, has worked at the campus for 6 years as a choir teacher.

“Jennifer is a fantastic teacher who has made a huge impact on our students. She works extremely hard, and is a true asset to our campus,” said Christina Lovette, Nolan Ryan Junior High principal.

Gallagher, along with the other finalist will attend a special event in May to compete at the statewide level for a larger cash prize. A statewide panel of judges will then conduct personal interviews with each finalist and select winners to receive additional cash prizes for themselves and their campus.

The H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards program launched in 2002, as a positive way to support public education in Texas. It has become the largest monetary program for educators in the state, spotlighting best practices and celebrating the passion and creativity of Texas educators.

H-E-B asks customers, Partners (employees) and community members to nominate teachers, principals, districts, early childhood facilities and school boards in Texas. Each nominee is then sent an invitation to complete an application online and is asked about their professional experiences, educational philosophies and achievements both in and out of the classroom. Once all applications are submitted, a team of judges selects the finalists, who are then surprised at their campus with a cash prize.

For additional information on the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards visit www.heb.com.

NOLAN RYAN JH TEACHER NAMED FINALIST FOR 2014 H-E-B EXCELLENCE

IN EDUCATION RISING STAR AWARDRobert Fulghum’s All I Ever Needed to Know I Learned in

Kindergarten at the Pearl Theater May 16-June 1, 2014What started out as an essay, turned best seller, turned stage

adaptation, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten remains popular because of its witty and undeniably charming look into ‘everyman’. Instantly recognizable characters from Robert Fulghum’s books include a shy little boy who insists on playing the "pig" in his class production of Cinderella; a man whose dream of flying carries him high over Los Angeles … in a lawn chair buoyed by surplus weather balloons; a "mother of the bride" who's staged a perfect wedding—until the bowling ball of fate rolls down the aisle; and a modern-day Greek philosopher who finds the meaning of life in a piece of broken mirror from World War II. If you have not read his books, you can be assured that these stories celebrate our very existence, from the whimsy of childhood to the wisdom of old age.

Tickets are $15/$13 with group rates available. Performances are weekends May 16-June 1. Buy One Get One FREE night Thursday, May 22nd. The Pearl Theater is located at 14803 Park Almeda Dr. Houston, TX 77047. Tickets are now on sale at http://www.pearl-theater.com. Please contact us at (713) 340-2540 with inquiries.

A Focus on Physical ActivityPathway to Improved Health

By Concentra Urgent Care

Being physically active is one of the most important steps you can take to maintain or improve your health. When combined with eating a healthy diet, regular exercise can substantially reduce your risk of chronic disease, prevent weight gain, and improve your overall level of physical and emotional fitness.

HOW MUCH PHYSICALACTIVITY DO I NEED?

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) has recently published several recommendations related to exercise:

1 Any physical activity is better than no physical activity• Includes people with disabilities• Far outweighs the possibility of risk of injury or illness2 Most health benefits occur with at least 150 minutes a week• Both aerobic (endurance) and muscle-strengthening

(resistance) are beneficial3 For most people, additional benefits occur when• You increase the intensity of your physical activity• You increase the frequency of your physical activity• You increase the duration of your physical activity

SHOULD OLDER ADULTSEXERCISE, TOO?

The same HHS guidelines apply, but older adults need to make sure that their fitness level and any chronic conditions allow them to safely perform physical activity. For example, if an older adult is at risk of falling, he should do exercises that maintain or improve his balance.

WHAT IF I HAVE ACHRONIC MEDICAL CONDITION?

If you have a chronic medical condition, you should be under the care of a health care provider. It is important to consult your physician about the type and amount of physical activity appropriate for you.

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

The health benefits of physical activity far outweigh the risks and some activity is better than none. Persons who have not been diagnosed with a chronic condition (such as diabetes, heart disease, or osteoarthritis) and do not have symptoms (e.g., chest pain or pressure, dizziness, or joint pain) do not need to consult with a health care provider prior to starting an exercise program.

For more information on total fitness programs in general, you can contact your health care provider, your Concentra health specialist, or visit the National Safety Council’s Web site at: http://www.nsc.org/resources/Factsheets/hl/fitness.aspx
