Sleepsong Lay down your head and I'll sing you a lullaby

Back to the years of loo-li-lai-lay. And i'll sing you to sleep and i'll sing you

tomorrow, Bless you with love for the road that you go. May you sail fair to the far fields of fortune,

With diamonds and pearls at your head and your feet.

And may you need never to banish misfortune, May you find kindness in all that you meet.

May there be angels to watch over you,

To guide you each step of the way, To guard you and keep you safe from all the

harm. Loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay/

May you bring love and may you bring happiness,

Be loved in return to the end of your days. Now fall off to sleep, i'm not meaning to keep

you. I'll just sit for a while and sing loo-li, lai-lay.

Loo-li, lai-lay...

COMPOSER FEATURE Yoel Sykes (born 1986) is a prayer leader, instrumentalist, and composer for the Nava Tehila community (an emerging prayer and study group) in Jerusalem. He studied flamenco guitar at the Center for Eastern Music in Jerusalem and at the Carmen de las Cuevas School in Granada. Yoel has composed dozens of melodies set to prayers, ranging from simple chants to complex musical pieces. Some of these can be heard on the Nava Tehila’s two albums: “Dancing in the Glory” and “Waking Heart.” Yoel’s music shows the influence of rock and blues, reggae and flamenco, as well as Arabic, Moroccan, and African music.

GUEST HARPISTS/SINGERS Siggy Massenbauer was born in Vienna (Austria) has been listening to the harp “within” her ever since she was a little child. She saw it as a mystical instrument and out of reach, but when she went to Ireland, she discovered the Celtic harp and has bonded with it ever since. She loves to play and sing tunes from many different traditions and eras, feeling that music is the universal language that helps weave harmony and healing across the world. Salomon Ellia was born in France, lived in Vienna and Israel. As a singer and harpist, he explores more particularly and ardently the world of Jewish Mediterranean music, which he feels echoes his origins. Since 2011 he has been the director of the festival Harpes d´exil (Caen). A versatile artist and pedagogue, he devotes himself to share this childhood dream—the harp—as well as his passion in all its diversity.

Eli Mertzel's Social Justice Project “My name is Eli P. Mertzel, and I’m becoming a Bar Mitzvah at CBST on March 10. As my social justice project I’m doing a Midnight Run (the breakfast version). We will be going around and giving essentials such as food, water, and clothing to the homeless. I will be collecting these necessities at CBST: canned food such as soup, bottled water, and toiletries (travel or sample size). For more information go to midnightrun.org. Thank you for your donations of these important items and your support!”

PRAYER for OUR COUNTRY Source of all Life, Guide our leaders with righteousness, Strengthen their hearts,

but keep them from hardening. That they may use their influence and authority to

speak truth and act for justice (Isaiah 16:3-5). May all who dwell in this country

share in its bounty, enjoy its freedoms, and be protected by its laws.

May this nation use its power and wealth to be a voice for justice, peace, and equality for all who dwell on earth.

May we be strong and have courage To be bold in our action and deep in our compassion, To discern when we must listen and when we must act, To uproot bigotry, intolerance, misogyny, racism,

discrimination, and violence in all its forms, To celebrate the many faces of God reflected

in the wondrous diversity of humanity, To welcome the stranger and the immigrant

and to honor the gifts of those who seek refuge and possibility here, as they have since before this nation was born.

Let justice well up like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream (Amos 5:24)

Harp Concert: Shushan Hashalom Monday, March 12, 7:00pm, 130 West 30th Street Shushan Hashalom is a story of a friendship—a bridge between two worlds—woven through harp strings and the voices of Siggy Massenbauer and Salomon (Guillaume Ellia). Siggy’s work is influenced by Celtic and medieval music. Salomon’s work explores Jewish and Mediterranean music. The duo has created a collection of songs in Yiddish, Judeo-Spanish, English, German, Italian, and more. They share their traditions in the belief that this cross-cultural project presents hope for each human being to let their own light shine. “All our differences can glow among us as sparks

that animate the flame of one same candle, the one of universal love.” The concert will also feature Cantor Steve Zeidenberg and the CBST Chorus under the direction of CBST Music Director Joyce Rosenzweig. Tickets and contributions: http://bit.ly/HarpConcert.

From folk and art songs to choral and chamber music to liturgical settings, piyyutim, and popular music, this extraordinary poetry and music tells the complex story of Israel’s struggles and dreams, her accomplishments and challenges. Performers include many of New York’s and Israel’s finest musicians, along with our own Cantor Steve Zeidenberg and the CBST Community Chorus under the direction of CBST Music Director Joyce Rosenzweig. This provocative concert will stir your soul and hopefully connect you in unexpected ways to the land and peoples of Eretz Yisrael. Sponsorships and tickets: http://bit.ly/CBSTAnnualConcert.
