PARSHA KI TAVO
"And it shall be, when thou cometh into the land which the
Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and dost pos-
ses it, and dwell therein."
As the parsha opens, Moshe prescribes the rituals and
prayer which are to accompany the presentation of the
first fruits and tithes. He formulates the covenant between
Hashem and the people and gives instructions regarding
the four ceremonies by which the nation is to declare the
terms of its tenure as it enters the Promised Land.
The underlying significance of the mitzvah of bringing biku-
rim (first fruits of the soil) is summarized in a short passage
which is repeated to the Kohen at the Temple, "And now
behold, I have brought the first of the soil which thou, O
Lord, has give me."
Our rabbis read profound meanings into three crucial
words in the above declaration. The word Ve'Atah is
meant to emphasize miyad (immediately). It implies that
one must not delay to bring bikurim because they need to
be brought fresh and never stale. This is to teach us that
when making a contribution to the community it must be
made miyad, (immediately) with dispatch. One should
never put off today; going to shul, learning, giving of Tzed-
akah or fulfilling their pledge and obligation to
their community or shul.
The second word in the declaration is hineh (behold). The
rabbis say this word means simcha (joy). One must bring
bikurim with
a happy and joyous heart, be'Simcha U'Vetuv Le'vav. The
last word of the three words of the declaration is the word
heveti (I brought). The rabbis say this word means Mi'Sheli
(from me).
The bikurim that we bring to the Temple must be our
own. You can't fulfill this obligation by proxy. You can't
ask the rabbis or others to make your obligation whole. No
one can give your tzedakah, or go to classes for you. The
idea is for us to involve ourselves and bring the bikurim per-
sonally.
This parsha of Ki Tav, is always read two weeks before Rosh
Hashana because of the Tochacha (rebuke) which is
listed in
this parsha . This is to remind us before Yom Tov to change
our ways and be more mindful of our actions.
PARASHAT KI TAVO
The beginning of this week's Parasha focuses on the
Mitzvah of Bikkurim and touches upon some issues
concerning the Ma'asrot. We know the Second Tithe,
Ma'aser Sheni, was given during the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and
5th years of the Shmitta cycle; Ma'aser Oni, the Tithe for
the Poor, was given during the 3rd and 6th years.
Interestingly, the Levi'im are included amongst the poor
(Oni), and the vulnerable (Ger, Yatom, V'almana). She-
vet Levi was endowed with a special Kedusha as the
Nosei HaMishkan, as the bearers and workers of the
Mishkan and Beit HaMikdash. The counter-pressure Levi
inherited was they were not given a chelek, a specified
portion of Land in Eretz Yisrael. As a result, they often
moved around and relied on others for their provisions.
The Mishna in Masechet Keilim says the beds of the Le-
vi'im were easily dissembled, to allow for the constant
movement of Shevet Levi. They were the Lomdei
U'melamdei Torah; the itinerant teachers of Hashem's
Torah and Derech HaChaim. To a certain degree, the
Levi'im were vulnerable, never feeling too comfortable
with their level of spiritual growth, always moving, al-
ways teaching and trying to grow.
Elul is the perfect time for each of us to emulate Shevet
Levi. We too should never feel too comfortable with our
station in life, working hard to reach greater spiritual
heights.
Shabbat Shalom U'mevorach!
Rabbi Yehuda Moses

KI TAVO
R’Elias Cont.
Lastly, the Tochacha (rebuke), or shall we say the warn-
ings in today’s parsha, are a frightening prediction of
what could and has happened to us during our exile
from the Promised Land. Living in a dangerous global
environment we should take seriously our fate and secu-
rity wherever we live. No Jew can dissociate him/herself
from his/her people, religion, and the
fate of Israel.
As we near Rosh HaShanah let us be mindful of our obli-
gations
to Hashem, the land of Israel, and each other.
Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Gabe Elias
