Av - Elul 5777 - TishrEi 5778

With Rosh HaShanah just a few weeks away, I’d like to offer a way to think about the meaning of teshuvah in the New Year, 5778. Teshuvah is often translated as “repentance,” and at this time of year we focus on a period of cheshbon hanefesh (self-examination). A better translation of the word teshuvah is “return.” This captures

the deeper meaning of the Hebrew, because it correctly shifts our focus from regret and appeals for forgiveness, toward the introspection and self-transformation that must precede and naturally lead to those things.

What should be the focus of this spiritual return? Giving. During the course of the year, the everyday stresses, anxieties and fears lead us to become “takers.” We ask questions like, “What’s in it for me?” or “What can I do to make my life more enjoyable?” We cut ourselves off from others and narrow our focus to pursue one pleasure or another. This is understandable and deeply human. In doing so, we expand the self and the ego, separating ourselves from what is greater than us.

When we do teshuvah — return — we strive to reconnect ourselves to the broader, beautiful world made by God. We begin to think of ourselves as “givers,” asking “What is needed of me?”. Though at first we might find ourselves too stretched to ask this question, we discover our truest purpose in moving outward from the self. In Hebrew prayer, avodah means “service to God.” Now is our time to stop asking “What do I need?” and ask instead, “What does Jewish teaching require of me?” or “What does God demand of me?”

“Eighty percent of success is showing up.” —Woody Allen

Based on that criterion, Shaarie Torah’s 2017 Annual Meeting on July 9th was a resounding success. I can’t recall an Annual Meeting with such a high energy level. More than 150 congregants brought their enthusiasm, creativity, and heartfelt expressions of love for our community. The evening started on a high note with the performance of our “Hamiltonians” and built from there.

When I accepted the presidency of Shaarie Torah, several congregants approached me offering their condolences or questioning the state of my mental health. While I acknowledged the problems our congregation faces are significant, I replied that the necessary ingredients for success are already

in place. We just have to figure out how to keep up our shul’s amazing progress! We have hired a dynamic rabbi in Rabbi Rose, secured a dedicated team of professional staff members, and assembled one of the best congregational boards in my memory. That collective talent and professionalism were on full display at the annual meeting.

By the time you read this, our board members and staff will have reviewed the ideas generated during from the Annual Meeting’s breakout session, compiled a list of action items, and begun engaging congregants, staff and board members to move those ideas forward.

We need to keep the momentum of that inspired evening going. On July 9th, we demonstrated the 80 percent of success. The remaining 20 percent is within our reach. When we achieve that, Shaarie Torah will truly be The Shul Where it Happens.B’shalom,

SOUP-A-THONChesed Committee Update

I'm happy to report that our Chesed team had a very successful Soup-a-Thon in the Shaarie Torah kitchen on Sunday, July 23rd and Monday, July 24th. Our group effort ensured that congregants in need are supported by Shaarie Torah when times are difficult.Together we made 72 quarts of soup (some chicken; some parve lentil-barley) and 26 loaves of blueberry bread (all in two dayes)! Everything went smoothly thanks to Erik Richmond and Marje Jacobson, who organized us so well, and to our team of cooks. I am sorry you can't see Marje in action here. That's probably because she's constantly in motion, always making sure everything goes right. As the voice of experience and wisdom in the CST kitchen,

Marje was an integral part of this whole effort. Now that we've made all this food, I want you all to know how we plan to make use of it. There are 12 quarts of each soup in the freezer at CST, along with several of the blueberry breads. Several people also took some home to their own freezers. When there is a need, we'll have the food ready to pull out of the freezer for whoever needs it. Depending on the situation, our committee might stop by the store and pick up a bag salad, which will round it out into a meal. I'm looking for a few more volunteers to keep the soup/bread in their home freezers, so let me know by email if you can help. To learn more about our committee and how you can help, contact me at [email protected]. Our group would welcome your participation. We have a lot of fun fulfilling various mitzvahs!

Where has the time gone? By the time of the High Holidays,

I will have been with you for one year as Executive Director of Congregation Shaarie Torah. Thank you for the opportunity of building Jewish community with you.

I was hired to help facilitate needed change at our shul. With the leadership of the board and committees, and my colleagues on the staff, much change was already underway before I arrived, and much change continues to happen. A lot of this was essential to ensure our future. Some change is purely elective, because there are always new challenges and opportunities to be addressed in healthy organizations.

I realize change can be uncomfortable at times. Change can make us feel as if the things we value are disappearing. Even worse, change can make us feel that others are rejecting the things we value. Change can make us feel disconnected, especially if we feel that we were unaware that the change was taking place. Change can make us feel older, and remind us of the passage of time, and even of our mortality.

Shaarie Torah needs to continue addressing our declining membership and finances. We are successfully reversing these challenges. Everywhere we turn, we now see the positive changes that are unfolding to ensure our vibrant future. Our progress is amazing and exciting! The shul’s progress is fueled by our existing members, and by our many new and recent members.

Together we share an affection and commitment for the Shaarie Torah community. Nowhere was this more on display than at our July 9th annual meeting of the congregation, when 160 adults and 30 children gathered for an amazing and uplifting experience. I am told that this was a record attendance. Everyone learned of our current challenges, the changes underway to address them, and the opportunities that still lie ahead. Some 30 volunteers helped put together the meeting as well as the wonderful performance from our Purim Hamilton cast — a huge outpouring of time and commitment.Thank you to all.

At the same time, this year’s annual meeting demonstrated that change can be healthy and comfortable. Representing every type of individual

A NEW YEAR OF REFLECTION AND CHANGEGary Fifer, Executive Director

and couple that we find in 2017 society, our members — some tracing their Shaarie Torah affiliation back decades, and some perhaps just several months — sat together and brainstormed ideas to ensure our shul’s health financial future. The depth of thought and the clever ideas submitted to us through comment cards are a testimonial to the willingness of our members to embrace change in a healthy way. The entire evening was a testimonial to the affection and commitment our members have towards Congregation Shaarie Torah. Thank you to all.

As we approach the New Year, our Jewish tradition calls upon us to do some self-reflection. I hope you can spend a little time considering your relationship with Shaarie Torah. I hope you will feel comfortable with changes that are unfolding, and in sharing any concerns or questions you have with someone on our leadership team — rather than keeping them to yourself or speaking of them in negative ways without letting us hear what you think. We want to hear from you, so please reach out.

I also encourage you to attend an event here that is new to you. I hope you will respond to our call to share The Shul Where It Happens with an unaffiliated friend so that we can continue building our membership. And I hope will extend your financial support as much as is comfortable. I hope all of this will feel good to you.

My best wishes to you, and to all who you hold dear, for a New Year of health, peace and personal fulfillment in 5778.

Shanah Tovah,Gary

It is that time of the year again when the weather is still amazingly sunny but you can

sense the upcoming of a change; where children are almost back in school, and summer soon becomes a nostalgic memory. Now what? I, as a child, had a special anticipation toward the beginning of school (I know, I know - it is still summer but before long…). Since I was a child, I always felt that it was another

chance for a new beginning. I used to hand wrap all my school books with different design paper, my pencils were sharpened and my clothes were ready to wear on this special day. Growing up in an orthodox family we did not have a “back to school” clothes shopping day but rather, we had a minhag (custom) of buying new clothes for the new year—Rosh Hashanah. The month of Elul, a month of great preparation with each sound of the shofar blowing every morning (except Shabbat) is filled with genuine soul searching and moral self examination, searching deep down in your heart for the changes and the fine tuning that hopefully will make the coming year more successful. Approaching Rosh Hashana has always pulled me in two different directions. Joy mixed with anticipation, celebrating the birth of the world, partners with God in an ongoing creation process is one aspect, and serious reflective mood, weighing our own actions during the past year and making T’shuvah (repentance) for our shortcoming is another aspect.

At Shaarie Torah we begin the exploration of Rosh Hashanah themes already in the last month of the Jewish calendar - the month of Elul! The Education Department has created a program called From Darkness To Light, Aug 23rd, 26th and 30th. As the month of Elul is a time of great potential and intense preparation leading up to Rosh Hashanah. This is the time to get ourselves ready spiritually and otherwise to connect to the High Holy Days. Here is a little taste of what is in store: Wednesday Aug 23 7:30pm-9:30 pm,Tea and Preparation; Saturday Aug 26 1pm-2:30, Wine and Awakening; and on Wednesday Aug 30 7:30pm-9:30pm, Desserts and Determination –make sure you look at the details and advertising in this issue as well as our website and Facebook postings! Our Our K-5th Ivrit B’ivrit (for native hebrew speakers) and our Wednesday night program for MS and HS, will meet on September 6th starting at 4:30 for schmoozing and socializing at Gabriel Park. Our K-5th Sunday School will begin on September 10. We have so many wonderful plans for our Religious School. From field trips to the Community Warehouse, the Sunshine Pantry, the Oregon Food Bank, the Oregon Zoo on Shabbat Noah, and even a Chart House restaurant visit for hot cocoa and storytelling with Maggidah Casandra Sagan—it is truly

Let’s make this year a time of learning, by yourself, as well as, with your family. I am looking forward to seeing many of you this coming year on Shabbat, holidays, and special programs.

New ways to connect with other members! In July, we launched a new Facebook group, called Yala (Let’s Go!).

Yala is a Facebook group which is open to all members of Shaarie Torah. It’s a place to find out about events happening in our community, outside of the synagogue. To join the group, all you have to do is search for Yala: Outside the Shul through your FB page and then click “Join Group.” Your request will be accepted and then you will be able to see upcoming events. These events are usually organized by members like yourselves, examples include Sacred Singing Night, Ma’asim Tovim’s upcoming crochet socials, and a

paint night with Channah Rose. We are always looking for members who want to host or organize an activity. Examples could include a hiking group, a sporting event, an in home Havdallah, or a weekly Parashat discussion group in your neighborhood. If you are interested in hosting an event, or inviting others to join you at another activity, please email [email protected] the details and she will add your event to the page. Blessings,

BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH YOUR SUPPORTSarah Suby, Development Coordinator

Much of our year has been spent evaluating, discussing and understanding Shaarie Torah’s current situation—the shul’s importance to you as an individual, its importance as an institution in Portland, and the financial reality of carrying on the educational, spiritual and community

connections that make Shaarie Torah welcoming to so many. We have seen so much progress—increased membership, increased attendance, and increased energy and commitment to the long-term health of our community!

As we move into the High Holiday season, we hope you will continue to reflect on the role Shaarie Torah plays in your life and the lives of others. So many people have dug deep, and pledged support to our three-year Transition Campaign on top of their usual giving. As is the tradition, we will be asking for your financial support during our Annual Yom Kippur Appeal. If you have supported the Yom Kippur

Appeal in the past, we hope you will once again do so and continue to build our renewal, growth and community spirit. If you have not participated in the past, we hope this is the year you will begin a new tradition.

The Annual Yom Kippur Appeal provides 10% of our income and is critical to our success as an organization. Last year the Yom Kippur Appeal exceeded expectations, raising $110,000, an increase of 64% over the prior year. As we rebuild our financial base, please help us to continue to achieve this much-needed progress. Your donation, of any amount, helps to build our community.

Look for information in your mailbox in the next few weeks. Your participation and financial support is the lifeblood of this community. Thank you so much for your engagement, caring and giving! Best wishes to you for a year filled with health and personal fulfillment.

With appreciation,

Sarah

Our Sisterhood has been the backbone of the synagogue ’s k i tchen,

educational programs and family activities for nearly a century. Sisterhood continues donating to the Yom Kippur Appeal, and to sponsoring kiddushes, Wednesday Night School kosher dinners, and numerous educational activities.

In addition, we help fund building maintenance repairs and upgrades.

Last year Sisterhood donated funds to replace the walk-in cooler in the kitchen, which had stopped working. This year we voted to donate $3,000 from the Diane Nemer Judaica Shop and $6,000 to the Education Department, and will reimburse up to $1,500 to the Education Department for the Wednesday Night School dinners. In addition, we are donating $25,000 to Shaarie Torah for the Annual Yom Kippur Appeal.

We encourage women of all ages to participate in the Sisterhood. Our Membership form is included in the bulletin (inside back cover) or can be downloaded from the CST website. Please return your annual dues as soon as possible and consider making an additional Donor Pledge to help Sisterhood continue succeeding. Dues are still only $25 a year. There are plenty of opportunities for everyone and now is the perfect time to join!

Visit the Gift Shop! Stop by the Diane Nemer Sisterhood Gift Shop on the second floor near the Main Sanctuary. We continue to stock a variety of Judaica (and some non-Judaica) merchandise for every occasion. You’ll find many new items including jewelry, holiday cards and other items, as well as host gifts and tchochkes. We also can order from our specialty catalogs if you’re looking for something specific.

MEN'S CLUB NEWSSteph Kotkins, Men's Club President

May and June were busy months for the Men’s Club with synagogue activities. On June 9th, we presented the Harry R. Nemer Service Award to Peter Lyman, our shul’s new president for the next four years. The dinner drew a crowd of more than 100 people

who all enjoyed a Mediterranean Chicken Dinner prepared by our gourmet chef, Isaac Tevet, who was ably assisted by other Men’s Club members.

We want to thank members of the Sisterhood — especially Marsha Strongin, Bobbie Cohen, Faye Samuels and Charlotte Tevet — for creating the beautiful table centerpieces. This annual event wouldn’t be possible without the table sponsors and donors, so a special thank-you goes out to them for their generous support. Our appreciation also to the synagogue staff for their

behind-the-scenes help to make this year’s dinner a success.

On Sunday, September 10th, the Men’s Club will host a picnic at Wallace park. This pre-High Holiday event will be an afternoon of fun and games for the entire family, not to mention good food. Best of all, it is free. Barry Benson is chairing this fun event.

This coming year, the Men’s Club will once again make and sell our popular kosher pickles. We will announce the date we are making the pickles, and will invite family participation on the day we make and pack the pickles. Pickle-packing day should be fun and a great chance to learn how to makeyour own delicious pickles at home.

The August Men’s Club meeting will be held on the Sunday the 27th in the Shaarie Torah Library at 10 a.m. We will discuss ushering and greeting for High Holiday services, set a date for our sponsored Kiddush, erecting the Sukkah, and the next Service Award candidates. Please plan on attending this important meeting. All are welcome.

The Men’s Club is recognized as a religious, social and service auxiliary organization of our congregation. We proudly fill a vital role in synagogue life. The health and vitality of every shul depends on an active Men’s Club and Sisterhood to attract new members. Synagogues with these active organizations help their shuls to thrive.

Please get involved and bring a friend. Synagogue membership is not required to join the Men’s Club. For more information, contact Linda at the synagogue office. In turn, I will personally contact you on the Club’s behalf. Dues are still just $18 a year. We welcome you to help make Shaarie Torah be The Shul Where It Happens.

Thank you,

Steph

T he Talmud Study Group:

For about twelve years, Shaarie Torah has held a weekly study of Talmud. A group of men and women meets in the synagogue library on Thursday evenings from 7:30 pm–9 pm. We are currently reading the tractate Bava Kamma about tort law (damages). We read the Hebrew/Aramaic text, its English translation, and then discuss it. Not uncommonly the discussion delightfully wanders off the subject. Anyone interested in observing or studying with us is welcome. For questions, contact me, Jerry Brem, at [email protected].

On Talmud:

The Talmud can be thought of as a commentary on the Torah, but it is much more. It consists of 63 books (tractates), which are organized by subject: Agriculture and blessings, Festivals, Women, Damages, Holy things, and Purity. For each topic there is a Mishnah, compiled about 200 C.E. For most tractates there is a Gemara, which was written later. The Mishnah reads, with certain exceptions, as a terse and precise law code. The Gemara can be understood as a more expansive commentary on that law, but is more complex.

The Jerusalem (Yerushalmi) and Babylonian (Bavli) Talmuds have the same Mishnah, but each has its own Gemara. The Bavli, since it was edited later, is viewed as more authoritative, and is more widely studied. Each tractate consists of a number of chapters of Mishnah and Gemara. The format of the Babylonian Talmud has not changed since the 16th century. Taken as a whole, the Talmud is compendium of civil and criminal law, a source of wisdom, and a guide to religious observance. There are entertaining tangents, providing anecdotes about the rabbis, legends, humor, folk medicine and mysticism. It also teaches something about the cultural and social history of the rabbinic period. The Gemara has a unique method of determining the law by argumentation and counter-argumentation. After the Mishnah states a

THE TALMUD & YOU AT SHAARIE TORAHJerry Brem, Talmud Study

law, the Gemara systematically works through external textual sources, case law, rabbinic opinions and experiences, challenges, and responses.

The Gemara’s intent is both to understand the particulars of the law and to update it, but it also raises other issues not addressed in the Mishnah.

After some back and forth argumentation, the Gemara comes to a conclusion, but not uncommonly its conclusion is not obvious. Comments by the commentators are helpful, but it is still necessary for the reader to wrestle with the text to understand the structure of the argument and the conclusion. This engagement of the reader is the unique aspect of Talmud study.

By learning Talmud one acquires a unique skill set. Over the centuries this study formed an education from which a student could seemingly master nearly any occupation. But studying Talmud today is still a valuable asset. By studying it one learns precision in use of words and concepts. It also provides a moral compass to help navigate through life’s problems.

In the past the study of Talmud was reserved for only men, but in the modern era that has changed. The Jewish Theological Seminary has a woman teaching Talmud. Many universities with a Jewish Studies department now have women teaching rabbinics.

Such study links the present to the past, providing continuity with generations of Jews who have read this text for the past two thousand years.

Dear Member,

Sisterhood membership is open to women of all ages and is still $25 a year for 2017. Sisterhood supports Congregation Shaarie Torah in numerous ways including traditional programs such as Hamentaschen baking, Latke Frying, operating the Diane Nemer Sisterhood Gift Shop (which donates 100% of its profits to the religious school), and overseeing the kosher kitchen. In the last quarter of 2016 we have donated to the Yom Kippur Appeal and sponsored the Break Fast after Yom Kippur.

There are two other divisions of CST Sisterhood. All are welcome to participate in any or all of the programs. The women’s programming that, in the past, fell solely under the Education Department is now part of Ahava, a division of Sisterhood that we hope will encourage younger members to participate in our programming. For more information on Ahava programs, please contact Dorice Hornstein at [email protected]. The Yala women’s program focuses on outreach. For more information on Yala programs, please contact Channah Rose at [email protected].

We hope that you will decide to join us by sending your check for $25 annual dues with the attached form to Rosalind Cooper at the address on the form. Additional financial donations are always welcome and appreciated.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Rosalind Cooper Congregation Shaarie Torah Sisterhood Financial Secretary --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
