    The Journey of Success

Suggested Reading: The Winners Manual Chapter 1

    Assignment: None

Defining SuccessWe have to have a clear view of what success is, what it isnt, and what it will take to achieve it

    (success).

    1. Why is there confusion about the definition of success?

We tell players that we are going to work like crazy on our team goals, and if they dont want to be

champions, theyre probably on the wrong team.

Success is a peace of mind which is a result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to becomethe best you are capable of becoming . John Wooden

Success is not only helping myself; its helping others reach their goals.

    Success is an everyday proposition.

    2. Which of the quotes above means the most to you? Why?

    3. Which of these quotes is hardest for you to believe? Why?

    4. Do you think it is possible for us as a leadership group to change the way that our team viewssuccess? Why or whynot?

Whether youre a business owner, you work for a corporation, youre a coach, a player, or a mother of

three no matter what obstacles you face in your future, you can win the game of life .

Understanding Your PurposeTo be able to have peace about working towards and achieving your goals, it is crucial to understand the

difference between your purpose and your goals. In very basic terms, your purpose is why you live theway you live. This can come from your faith, your background, or your understanding of the world, butyou must have a purpose before you can set your goals.

Your purpose explains the why? question. Why do you want to score 20 TDs? Why do you want to go

to college? Why do you want to win a conference championship?

Over the next few weeks, we are going to look at both purpose and goals as it pertains to your lifeindividually and our team collectively.

    5. Why do you do what you do? What is the purpose for the way that you live? (If you cannot

answer this question, you either arent being honest with yourself o r you are in great need of apurpose)

Setting Your GoalsBefore you can even start to set goals, it is important that you have the proper mindset from which tocreate these goals. More specifically, creating goals is a waste of time if you do not believe thefollowing statement:

You are in control of your life. No one else can determine your future. If you want somethingbad enough, nothing will come between you and that goal. Excuses are a waste of time thatyou could be using to overcome whatever problems are preventing you from reaching your

    goal.

If you believe this to be true, then you are ready to set goals. You are ready to start moving yourself forward toward the you that you want to be. Fill out the following worksheet to start develop inggoals that you can use to guide you tomorrow and in the future.

The 6 Essential Areas of Personal GrowthAs we talked about last week, we all want to be a better person. The problem comes when we try todefine what that means. Chances are you have different ideals then the person next to you. At thesame time, I believe we can all agree that the three purposes and three goals that Ohio State uses help

us break down our lives so we can focus on details of getting better / achieving our goals. Here is a brief overview of the topics he discussed in words that apply more directly to us.

Three Purposes1. Family (Personal / Family)

Family is your support. It is your rock, the people that you go to in times of trial. It doesnt

always look the same (single parents, loss of siblings, adoption and the like), but that doesntmake it any less important. You have a responsibility to love, care for, and contribute to yourfamily in the same way they have given to you if not more. Our families can be a great source of purpose for us.

    Examples:

    2. Trust / Faith (Spiritual / Moral)

Spiritual matters are a very personal matter for many of us. For that reason, we rarely talkabout it in school settings and that is fair. At the same time, many of you derive much of yourpurpose from what you believe about this world. It is important that you embrace yourpersonal faith and develop an understanding as to how your faith should impact your life as well

    as the lives around you.

    Examples:

    3. Community (Caring / Giving)

I believe that one person can make a difference. In fact, that is why I am here doing what I do.As varsity athletes, you too have the opportunity to make a difference. This community islooking at you. They want to know what you are going to do with your position of influence. Are you going to party it away or are you going to change this place for the better.

My mother used to always say remember who you are and who you represent every time Ileft the house. That applies to you as well. Every day you represent our school, our team, yourfamily, your church and so on. Knowing and understanding that should change the way you live.

    The Big Ten Fundamentals1. Attitude

    2. Discipline3. Excellence4. Faith and Belief 5. Work6. Handling Adversity and Success7. Love8. Responsibility9. Team10. Hope

Of the list above, which do you think are the mostimportant traits of a great leader / teammate? Explain why in the space below.

Attitude is EverythingA good attitude can overcome some other limitations, but even great talent cant overcome the wrong

    attitude. (page 40)

The more players study and practice this fundamental, the more they believe they can decide how theyfeel. They realize they have power over their attitude. (page 42)

It is impossible to be grateful and unhappy at the same time. (page 44) Which do you want to be?

When youre a team member, if you enter Ohio Stadium (Ratcliffe Field) and youre not ready to play, itmeans youre taking for granted the wonderful privilege you have, and youre not really grateful. (page

    48)

If we were humble, nothing would change us neither praise nor discouragement. Mother Teresa

Flaming enthusiasm, backed by horse sense and persistence is the quality that most frequently makesfor success. Dale Carnegie

There are three types of people:those who make things happen,

    those who watch things happen,

    and those who say, What

    happened?

    Which one are you?

The Importance of Faith and Belief

Champions believe in themselves even if no one else does. Author Unknown

I believe that South Haven is going to win a State Championship in football. When I tell people this, there are always more than a few people that want to snicker or smile. They dont believe it is possible. They dont have faith. The great thing is that those people dont have to believe. The only ones thatmust believe are the people wearing those uniforms and headsets. You see I think that we determineour destiny on the football field. I have faith that if we all out work, out prepare, out practice, andoutwork our opponents every day it will result in success.

How about you? Do you believe or do you want to laugh under your breath when you hear me talkabout winning a title? Dont worry you dont have to answer. I can see your belief by the way that youwork.

Faith is who you are. Belief is what you do with your faith.

I think when you move past you fear and you go after your dreams whole-heartedly you become free.Know what Im saying? Move past the fear. LL Cool J

To disbelieve is easy; to scoff (mock) is simple; to have faith is harder. Louis Lamour

We are only beaten when we cease to believe what we can do. Author Unknown
