Ravings By Mike Hickey
"2011"First of all I need to thank the many friends and familymembers for the very generous Christmas presents that I
received over the Holidays. What exactly I am going to do with the six ton of coal that I received is uncertain at thistime but rest assured that Mikie is working on theproblem.
For some strange reason, I am quite excited about thenew year ahead. Why I might get excited, when I don't havea clue as to what will really happen ... I don't understand! But I am approaching the year with a positive attitude. Iam positive that the Corporate Jet wil l lose speed and gainthe steering control necessary to avoid being a blackmissile of destruction. I am positive that the missus willcontinue with her evening classes to expand her mind andshrink her body, but will also fit in a cooking class for
beginners!!In the next few weeks we are also going to have a little
fitness promotion for the staff. It appears that the staffinterest in having Ossekeag supply pedometers to inspiremore walking is ver y high. We haven't worked out all thedetails for what progress will get measured but anyone
who works hard will definitely benefit. The benefit for us ingetting them into shape is the ability to work the poorcritters that much harder. Thanks to Alex for a great idea.
I personally am going to wait for the butt-sittingcontest!!
The unfortunate downside to this exercise challenge isthat the missus is going to plead for more walking timeand even less time on cooking lessons. A wife who is inshape but can't cook or a chubby accomplished chef???There are some decisions that just aren't going to get anyeasier, even if it is a new year!!My final reason for being so excited about 2011 is that the
missus is going to finally get the diamonds that she sorichly deserves!! Six tons of coal buried a few feet into theground and then have the missus pressurize the coal by
walking back and forth, back and forth, will turn thoselumps of black into shiny diamond in no time. My 2011Christmas shopping is practically done already!! 800

HEALTHIER EATING IN THE NEW YEARIs eating healthier one of your New Year's resolutions?Following a fad diet, or being overly restrictive, will not
help you or your family achieve your health goals. Healthyeating does not mean boring, tasteless foods. Adopt ahealthier diet, without feeling deprived.
1. Fill the plate with colorful vegetables - There are manymore vegetables to try than just lettuce and tomatoes!Bright-colored and dark green leafy vegetables areespecially loaded with vitamins and antioxidants. Theyare also high in fiber, which makes them very filling. Inaddition, they are low in calories – good to help trimwaistline. When you fill up your stomach with veggies, they will be less likely to feel the urge to binge on otherhigh-fat or processed foods.
2. Snack on fruits - fresh or dried - When you feel likesnacking, grab a fruit instead of chips or cookies. Likevegetables, fruits are high in antioxidants and fiber andlow in calories. To make it fun, use low-fat yogurt as a dip. This way you'll get some calcium as well as protein – which helps feel full longer. And don’t forget about driedfruits. Mixing them with whole-wheat breakfast cereal andnuts makes a nutritious school snack.
3. Choose whole grains - Eat at least three servings ofwhole grains every day. Not only are they high in fiber, whole grains also contain an array of antioxidants notfound in fruits and vegetables. The easiest way toincrease whole grain intake is to replace some of yourrefined-grain products. For instance, use whole-grain
bread instead of white bread when making lunchsandwiches. Substitute half the white flour with wholewheat flour in your regular recipes for cookies, muffins, and pancakes. Toss brown rice, wild rice, or barley in yourvegetable soup. Snack on popcorn instead of chips onfamily movie nights - yes, popcorn is a whole grain. Youdon’t need to completely wipe out all refined grains; servehalf whole wheat/half refined as a starting point.
A New Year's resolution is something that goes in oneyear and out the other.

FUN, INEXPENSIVE WINTER ACTIVITIESWith an abundance of short, gloomy, and not to mentioncold, days, the winter blues seem almost inevitable, however there are some activities to warm up the winterblues. Whether you’re trudging through snow banks ortrying not to slip on ice-covered sidewalks, it’s no surprise
that winter isn’t the most favored season to be outside, butit doesn’t have to be that way.
While sports like skiing and snowboarding are always thepopular choice for winter sports, they tend to be prettyexpensive to partake in when you factor in ski/snowboardrentals (or purchasing your own equipment), the cost of lifttickets and transportation to and from the mountains. There are, however, a few inexpensive options foroutdoor activities in the winter. Here are a few popular, and not-so-popular, ideas for a fun day in the snow.
Old Fashioned Tobogganing - nothing beats the rush offlying down a hill at what feels like a mile a minute. Whilewhen most people think of tobogganing, the image of acandy-cane shaped wooden sleigh comes to mind, but
there are other options in sleds such as the popular ‘magiccarpets’ which are simply, sheets of thick, flexible plasticwith two holes cut out for you to hold on to.
Snowshoeing - Who said you can’t take a nature hike inthe dead of winter? By strapping on a pair of snowshoes, walking down un-slow-plowed trails is a lot easier.
Skating - Another inexpensive activity to do during thecold, winter months is ice skating on a local pond/river.Always be sure, if skating on a frozen waterway, to know ifit is safe to skate on before getting on the ice.

MOORE FROM OTTAWA
Rob Moore, MP Fundy Royal
Looking back over 2010, we can truly say that this year belonged to Canada. 2010 wasa year which was marked by successes andtriumphs, both nationally and on the worldstage. At the start of this year, Canadatriumphed at the Winter Olympic Games in
Vancouver. In skiing, Alexandre Bilodeau wasthe first Canadian in history to earn a gold
medal for Canada while on Canadian soil.Through hard work and superior skill,Canada’s athletes earned 14 gold medals, arecord which is unsurpassed. We can allremember the impressive opening andclosing ceremonies, the happiness at seeingour athletes set new world records, and the
pride that we felt when we won the final hockey game. Weshowcased Canada to the world, and we did it with pride. New Brunswick continued this proud tradition with theInternational Association of Athletics Federation 2010 WorldJunior Championships being held in Moncton in July.
Without taking time to slow down, Canada continued to gainstrength throughout 2010. In June we saw the
implementation of the Approved Destination Statusagreement with China. This has opened the tourism marketdirectly with China. This is also an historic success for theCanadian tourism sectors and the many Canadian smallbusinesses that will benefit from increased tourism. InOctober, I was pleased to lead a trade delegation of provincialMinisters and officials to China to see how Canadian tourismoperators can tailor their businesses to China, and also to work
with the provinces to promote Canada to the international
community. Our government has also continued to stand up for law
abiding Canadians by introducing fair and tough new laws. InNovember, we introduced Bill C-54, the Protecting Childrenfrom Sexual Predators Act, which will establish mandatoryprison sentences for certain offences.
We also introduced Bill C-22, the Protecting Children fromOnline Sexual Exploitation Act. If passed, this Bill will requireinternet service providers to notify police and safeguardevidence if they believe that a child pornography offence has
been committed using an Internet service that they provide. Inaddition to securing our streets, we are also securing ourborders from human smugglers who abuse Canada’simmigration system. We introduced the Preventing HumanSmugglers from Abusing Canada’s Immigration System Act
which will ensure law enforcement officers have the tools theyneed to crack down on human smugglers and deter illegalmigrants from coming to Canada.
We are also working to ensure that our economy isstrengthened during these tough economic times. Canada has
weathered the storm admirably, and since July of 2009 Canadahas created over 441,000 new jobs. These five quarters ofeconomic growth clearly show that Canada’s Economic ActionPlan is keeping our recovery on track. The International
Monetary Fund has predicted that Canada’s growth will leadthe G-7 in 2011. We will continue to support Canadianbusinesses and workers with lower taxes and policies that leadto job creation.
With a new year upon us, we can look forward to continuingCanada’s successes internationally and here at home in FundyRoyal. I am looking forward to continuing to represent ourregion’s interests, and would like to wish you a very happy2011. 513

ANGLICAN CHURCH ANNIVERSARIESThis year is going to be a big year for our Church community
th ththe 225 Anniversary of the Anglican Community and 200
Anniversary of Christ Church in Bloomfield. In 1786, the Rev'dJames Scovil, Kingston, started taking occasional services in
what was called Norton at the time, now called Bloomfield. In1797, two and a half acres of land was given to the church by
rdLoyalist Simon Baxter, and fourteen years later, on June 31811, the Church building was erected; it was 30' x40' and wasused in the summer for services and finished in 1822.
thIn 1826, July 18 , Christ Church was consecrated as the
Parish Church by the Right Reverend John Inglis, and 34persons were confirmed. In 1838, the Church building wasmoved across the road to its current location and put on apiece of land given by John Cook Hayes. The moving was doneby Isaac B. S. Raymond using 13 yoke of oxen!
We are planning special 10:30am services on the last Sundayof each month (except Easterand Christmas) throughoutthe year with a special
Anniversary Service ont h
Sunday, May 29 with Archbishop Claude Miller. On

TH25 ANNIVERSARY - SUSSEX SHRINERSHappy 25th Anniversary to the Sussex Shrine Club andcongratulations on helping 32 children in the 25 years!Recently at the Masonic hall on Main St in Sussex 78 personsgathered for dinner and to hear some stories of children beinghelped. The mothers of two lads told of their son’s needs andspoke of how the Shriners were able to help. The first speaker, Beth, described her son as having one leg a
bit shorter than the other. One of their friends suggestedasking the Shrine organization for directions on what could
be done. Within a short time they were registered with DrFassier of the Montreal Shriners Hospital for Children formedical attention. Dr Fassier and his coworker Dr Hunby wereable to graft a piece of his hip bone to the short bone and withbraces he was soon able to walk again; then they were able to“stretch”the main leg bone.
The Shrine provides two services - firstly an appointment isarranged with a Shrine medical specialist and secondly thecost of all transportation to the hospital or the BathurstOutreach Clinic whether it be for surgery, checkups orpreliminary interview.
Susan, the other mother, then described very briefly herson’s relationship with the same hospital and outreach clinic. Then a retired Sussex resident described his experience in the1940's with the same hospital. Because he was there so longand his father was overseas in the war, his mother came withhim to Montreal and had employment during his stay. Thus,he was an excellent example to the young boys as to how natural he has become in his walking without any side effects.
Then Noble Gilbert Carter described events around theestablishment of a Shrine Club in Sussex in 1985 when Dr CarlJarvis was the head of Luxor Shrine. Although the Saint JohnShrine Club was encouraging, it was the Moncton Shrine Club
which provided the financial assistance and the directionneeded to get the Sussex Shrine Club up and running.
Two carloads of Shriners (seven Nobles and Ladies) arrivedfrom Moncton for the evening including the President Noble
JJ Leadbetter. The Sussex service Clubs were representedincluding Kiwanis - George McPhee, Lions - Harley Hunt andRotary - Lou MacNamara with the Legion President Ervin Ellisand Lloyd Kierstead of Scouts Canada also present. 14members of the Sussex Shrine Club and their ladies werepresent.
President Donald Stiles presided over the event introducingeach speaker along the way. At the conclusion of the meetingNoble Brian Keating was installed as the new President for2011. He thanked all for their support, thanked the
volunteers who prepared and served the dinner. He wished usall a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

2011
I begin the new year unsure of what it should be called. Are
we beginning two thousand and eleven, or is it more
appropriately referred to as twenty eleven? Certainly 1911
was nineteen eleven not one thousand nine hundred and
eleven. The same applies to 1811, 1711, 1611 etc. So let us
go back to the last new millennial, 1011. The only
historical event I can dredge out of my high school history
lessons would be 1066, the date of the Norman invasion o
England. I have never heard referred to as anything but ten
sixty-six. Those two thousands seem to have thrown
everything off! Language is an interesting thing
meanwhile I still use both pronunciations at various
times.
There is something calming about winter, once the snowfalls. I am not into the cold (or heat for that matter), but I
love the winter landscape. As a kid my brother and I spent a
lot of hours outdoors, building snow forts, sliding, skating
on the flood plain of the brook if the weather conditions
co-operated. I am able to recapture a little of those days
now with my grand-daughter, who is nearly five. We did
some shovelling together over the holidays, followed up by
building a snowman and later going sliding. Remember
those carefree days of childhood, when the quality of the
snow was the biggest issue on your mind - was it sticky and
"packy", perfect for snowforts, or light and fluffy and
meant for a toboggan. And if we were lucky enough to have
crust, life was really good! This year I am endeavouring to change my perspective o
winter. It is not just for curling up with a book in front of
the fire, but includes snowshoeing through the wood
roads, experimenting with winter photography and just
plain playing outdoors with my grand-daughter.
"When you live in Texas, every single time you see snow it's magical. " ~
