FROM THE COMMODORE
With our 146th Annual Meeting now behind us, I am focused on the year – andyears – ahead of us. I am deeply honored to be Commodore of ourprestigious club. The SFYC did not get to world-class status by accident. Our
membership is second to none, and clearly dedicated to making our club a destinationto be enjoyed.
Before we move forward, I want to express my gratitude to dedicated members leavingthe Wheelhouse, or moving into different leadership roles, for their tremendouscontributions to our Club last year. First, special thanks to new Junior Staff CommodoreSuzie Moore and her husband Bryan for all that they have done. After pouring herheart and soul into The SFYC, I hope a well-earned vacation is on the calendar for them.We also owe a debt of gratitude to: outgoing Harbor Chair David Cobb and HouseChair Director Paul Rosenlund; Helen Reilly and Marily Rimmer for their fantasticwork as our Auxiliary Co-Presidents; and Director Tina Lundh and Secretary DanBuckstaff, who will be missed on the board.
With Charles Froeb, Robert Brant and Andy Fromm joining as Directors, LaurenceBekins as Secretary, and Paul Rosenlund as Rear Commodore, we are making greatadditions to our strong team at the Board level. Our committees also have an incrediblytalented pool of dedicated volunteers.
I’m happy to welcome Christopher Lacey as our Harbor Chair, Paul (Dino) Dinovitzas our House Chair, Stephanie Stroub as our new Auxiliary President, and Helen Reillyand Shana Rohde-Lynch (my lovely wife) as our new Entertainment Co-Chairs. Thesegreat, new additions will round out our dynamic team for 2016 and complement thegreat work done by our other committee leaders including, our Treasurer Don Jesberg,Race Chair Nancy Demauro, RDC Chair Angie Lackey-Olson, Member Chair andDirector Stu Reilly, Youth Chair Patty Young, S/C Wendy Miller along with S/C BillMelbostad on Protocol Committee, S/C Jim Robinson with Jay Hooker as our EightBells Co-Chairs, Cruising Chair Jib Martens, Historical Chair S/C Ken Frost and RichWideman assisted by Robert Schmidt as Port Captains. All of their great work and ourmember experience are supported by our hard working staff, under the greatmanagement of our General Manager, Steve DePetro.
The annual meeting is always the fun time of year when we announce the Yachtsman ofthe Year and recognize the Yachtswoman of the Year, and this year was no exception. Both honorees, Vice Commodore Jerry Eaton and Madeline Morey, were verydeserving and have given a great deal to The SFYC.
As we move into 2016, I hope to have exciting news regarding our proposed RegattaCenter, with the plans now making their way through the City of Belvedere PlanningDepartment.
Let’s have a fun, safe and enjoyable 2016!
Ed Lynch, Commodore The San Francisco Yacht Club

AUXILIARY
Over the past two years, I’ve had thegreat privilege of working on theAuxiliary Committee, where I’ve formed
life-long friendships. So, I am especially happyand honored to serve members of The SanFrancisco Yacht Club as your 2016 AuxiliaryPresident. I look forward to working with ournew Commodore Ed Lynch, the other newcommittee Chairs (congratulations on your newpositions!), and the rest of The Club leadershipteam.
I’m proud to introduce an amazing newAuxiliary board, including: Vice President JulieZanze; Secretary Emily Heller; TreasurerAnnie Mendenhall; Directors Paige Brooks,Shannon Cantwell, Jennifer Cromar, VeldaDemmert, Kim Lynch, Barbara McCrum,Stephanie Portillo, and Andrina Ramirez;P/P Marily Rimmer and P/P Helen Reilly; andHonorary member Shana Rohde-Lynch(yeah!). Please congratulate them when you seethem around The Club.
As I’m sure you noticed, The Club wasbustling with goings on in December. Kicking offthe month, leading-lady elves Eugenia Jesbergand Jolynn Hardiman were busy rallying ateam of decorators in setting up the trees, wreaths, and trains…oh, and mistletoe. Weknow it takes an elf village to turn The Club intothe winter wonderland we all dream aboutduring the holidays, so many thanks to everyone who helped. Make sure to tell Chef Renyhow great the Regatta Center looked (I think hehas a future in design). Kudos to CarolAnderson, who also deserves an honorablemention.
Everything looked magical for the Get Litcelebration. It’s a favorite of mine, and I hopeyou had the chance to see it. Twenty-four boatsparticipated, and the harbor looked beautiful.Commodore Ed Lynch took the first-placeprize, Joseph Carapiet won second place, andAshley Perrin and Tina Lundh won third placefor their great dry-dock decorations. I want topersonally thank Co-Chair Emily Heller and thejudges, Barbara McCrum, Eugenia Jesbergand Jolynn Hardiman.
Our exciting year-end activities alsoincluded several prestigious awardpresentations. In the spirit of congratulations, I’d

like to recognize the honorees (please hold yourapplause ‘til the end…).
First, the Auxiliary was pleased to presentthe Bill Black Award to Thomas Young. Thankyou, Eugenia Jesberg, for representing theAuxiliary in presenting the award to this amazingjunior sailor.
At the Annual Auxiliary Meeting thefollowing week, our 2014 Yachtswoman of theYear, Anne McCormack, presented the 2015Marianne Mason Yachtswoman of the Yearaward to a most-deserving Madeline Morey.Harvey Rogers and Vicki Sodaro presentedStephanie Wondolleck with the Nancy RogersRace Grant. And, we also announced thewinners of the Special Service awards: P/P LoriFromm honored S/C Jim and MarthaRobinson, and P/P Elizabeth Merrillrecognized P/P Mimi Cornelius for theirdedication and devotion to The Club. Ourkeynote speaker, Ashley Perrin, did an amazingjob crunching her lifetime of impressive sailingachievements into a 30-minute presentation –and did it so humbly. I was so proud to turn tothe person sitting next to me, and say “Hey, she’sone of my closest friends.” Next time you see her,ask her why she had chocolate in her hair... Now,we can applaud all our honorees!
Finally, we wrapped up our Auxiliary eventsfor the year with our Holiday Gala dinner dance, where members once again showed we knowhow to cut a rug and ring in the holidays! Ourannual visit from Santa was also a great hit(negotiations are underway about whether ornot his naughty and nice list will be published inthe next Bulletin).
Now onto 2016 … Before you know it, wewill be sailing into Spring. Easter at The Club is afamily-must, coming up on March 27, so markyour calendars. A lot is in store this year, so keepyourself glued to the Bow Wave and Bulletin soyou don’t miss your favorite events. And, if youare interested in helping with any of our events, please reach out and let us know!
See you all at The Club!

management meeting that Madelineattended, Staff Commodore Wendy Millerasked if anyone had computer skills and aninterest in racing. Madeline raised herhand, and that launched 14 years of RaceCommittee volunteering. She masteredevery scoring program that we’ve used, andhas been called "relentless" in ensuring thatresults are accurate. She mentors others tocontinue building The Club’sscoring/recording bench strength, and isalways eager to encourage volunteers andto show appreciation for their work.
It seems the more Madelinevolunteered, the broader her interest andimpact. In 2011 she became a member ofthe Race Council, and has served on theorganizing committee for several nationaland international regattas hosted by SFYCover the last few years. Beyond the manyyears she’s devoted to the race program, this yachtswoman has served for three yearson the SFYC Nominating Committee for theBoard of Directors, and for two years as anactive member of our Finance Committee. She also enjoys our club social activities andconsistently supports the Auxiliary events.
On more personal notes, energy andpassion have been defining characteristicsthroughout Madeline’s life. Keeping heroptions open, she earned a Bachelors ofArts degree in Sociology and a Bachelors of
some members of her crew have beensailing with her for almost 30 years.
Her Corinthian spirit and love of thesport have touched the lives of thosebeyond her long-time friends, family andcrew. In preparation for the InauguralAuxiliary Cup regatta, she took severalother female skippers – women whowould ultimately compete against her –out on her boat and their boats tomentor them and increase theirconfidence in the starting sequence. Shealso wrote a tutorial of starting sequencetips based on wind and current for themto have as an ongoing reference. Inanother instance, she received high praiseand recognition from the Race Chair ofthe Corinthian Yacht Club forwithdrawing from the race and standingby when a competitor lost a sailoroverboard during one of the 2015 FridayNight Races.
Through her active participation inRace Committee, countless racers fromaround the world have benefited fromMadeline’s passion for sailing and serviceto The Club. SFYC members DaleClosner and Chris Dawson were amongthe first friends Madeline met aftermoving to California, and they sponsoredher membership to The Club in 2001. Atthe end of an introductory race
Each year, The Club singles out afemale member to honor with theMarianne Mason Award for the
Outstanding Yachtswoman of the Year.Recipients are selected based on theiractive interest in sailing, their extensivecontribution of time to Club activities, andtheir demonstrated leadership, cooperation and respect. This year, thenominating committee and Board ofDirectors are proud to recognize MadelineMorey with this prestigious award.
Madeline fell in love with life on thewater as a child on Galveston Island, Texas, where she earned her Girl Scouts sailingbadge and was an avid water skier. Aftermoving to the Bay Area in 1987 to join herbest friend after the birth of her oldestgoddaughter, Madeline quickly took to the(much colder) water again. Always up for achallenge, sailing with friends ignited adesire to skipper her own boat, and shepurchased and campaigned a Catalina 30.A few years later, she moved up to theBeneteau 321 San Souci, and rumor has itthat another boat (that points higher) is onthe way! She sails often, racing exclusivelyunder The SFYC burgee and enjoying daysails on the Bay with her many friends. There may be no greater testament to thecamaraderie and bonds of friendship she’screated through sailing than the fact that

Science degree in Electronics Technologyfrom the University of Houston. Ever aself-made woman, she paid her waythrough university by touring the nation asa sound engineer for the country swingband Asleep at the Wheel.
After graduating, Madeline went thehigh-tech route. Her work managing the
research and development efforts ofseveral entrepreneurial softwarecompanies took her around the world toplaces such as Russia, Australia, thePhilippines, Great Britain, and Europe. Sheultimately worked her way up to ChiefTechnical Officer at SPL World Group. When it was acquired by Oracle in 2006,she stayed on as Senior Vice Presidentduring the transition before leaving toaccept a position as Chief OperatingOfficer of eMeter Corp. In 2009, she lefthigh-tech behind to enter retirement –
which in Madeline’s case means workingpart time managing her husband’s business.
She met her husband Bob – love of herlife – in 1997 through fellow boardmembers of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Heshared her love of all things nautical, andthey were married in 2006 on a beach atsunset in Kona, HI. Never wanting to be
too far from thewater, they live parttime in their homein San Rafael andpart time on Bob’spower boat. Someof the things Bobsays aboutMadeline wouldmake many of usenvious: “She’ssuch a talentedwoman ateverything shedoes. I’m always soproud of her - it’sexhausting! She’sgood at cooking,
friendships, business relationships -everything she touches turns to gold. She isso sincere. She is the best wife imaginableand I adore her."
A few more notes about this amazingYachtswoman: She is a novice oil painterand she is a certified scuba diver who’straveled to many exotic places around theworld to pursue diving. She is evencertified to officiate at weddings, which sheputs to good use right on her boat! Inaddition to her family, in-laws, and step-children and grand-children, she counts as
family her two god daughters whosemarriages she performed.
Fortunately for The Club and itsmembers, Madeline will continue toactively participate at SFYC over thecoming year on the Race Council andFinance Committee, as well as working onthe organizing committee for two majorregattas.
We hope you’ll join us incongratulating Madeline!
