The annual film guide is the main publication othe Slovenian Film Centre. In the electronic ormit can also be ound on our website. We entered theyear 2014 with an important new development:short films got their own catalogue, since in the lastew years it became apparent that they needed one.Thereore more inormation about short films be-tween 2010 and 2014 can be ound in the other pub-lication. This catalogue, however, covers eaturesas well as mediumlength and eature documenta-ries, and it demonstrates that 2013 was a very suc-cessul year or Slovenian films.In Slovenia two eatures Going Our Way 2by MihaHoevar and Chefurs raus!by Goran Vojnovi hadgreat boxoffice results. In Slovenia as well as abroadClass Enemy, the debut by Rok Biek, had the greatortune o enjoying an extraordinary international

estival and distribution success (or now theatricaldistribution in Austria, Switzerland and Italy) aswell as a very avourable response rom the (Slove-nian) viewers. Slovenian cinemas simultaneouslyshowed as many as three Slovenian films. Since allthree o them had a remarkable number o viewers,the myth that Slovenian films should not competewith each other in the domestic theatrical distribu-tion have finally crumbled to dust. RTV Slovenija,our public television, produced two eature debuts:

Documentaries reach into the field o mod-ern arts and portray extremely interesting, wittyand creative artists, especially relevant or the areao the ormer Yugoslavia.In 2014 Vinko Mderndorer completed his thirdeature film Inferno, while The Tree is the firstfilm by Sonja Prosenc. Quite a ew projects are inthe works: the veterans Damjan Kozole and JanCvitkovi are returning soon; Vlado kaar andMiha Knific are making their second eatures;while iga Virc and Toma Gorki are working ontheir debuts. Ater his eature, Rok Biek is workingon a documentary film, and so is Metod Pevec. Co-productions have also strengthened their positionand direction: The Reaperand The Butcher Heartare being made with our neighbour Croatia, Our

Everyday Lifewith Bosnia and Herzegovina, while

Family Filmby Olmo Omerzu is being worked on incooperation with the Czech Republic.Good luck to Slovenian film: with its insightulauthors, an increasing number o loyal viewers athome as well as inquisitive riends abroad it cer-tainly deserves it!

VINK O MD ERN DOR FER (1958, Slovenia), director andwriter, graduated in theatre direction rom AGR-FT. He directs also theatre plays, opera peror-mances and television works. His eature Suburbspremiered in Venice and Montreal and has alsobeen selected or the Karlovy Vary, Cannes (Tousles Cinemas du Monde), and other estivals. Sub-urbs has received six international and nationalawards and was selected or the Variety CriticsChoice: Europe Now in 2005. Mderndorers ea-ture Landscape N2 premiered in Venice. It hasreceived eight international and national awardsand was the Slovenian candidate or the Academy

Award or Best Foreign Language Film 2009.

The world today looks like inferno: an unjust hell where those who are unlucky

just like the protagonist of our film are simply unable to find the way out of their

misery. Of course, Inernois by no means an abstract meditation on hell andevil. It addresses a concrete soc ial and political situation, in which the world has

found itself because of the gluttonous, insatiable global capitalist monstrosity. In

order to express all the powerlessness that millions of people wake up with every

morning, I have only focused on a single story of a young family which only wants

abroad they are cut off not only from their culture, but also from their relatives

and friends. Kids are often out on a limb because their parents feel helpless just

like their children do. They are all lost in a world of different social norms and

customs where rules that are unclear to them apply. The parents hardly know

what is right, what is allowed and what is not, so they cannot teach their children

In March 1961, Yugoslavia sold its secret space pro-

gramme to the US. Two months later Kennedy an-

nounced that the USA would go to the Moon. This is an

urban myth that millions of people want to believe in.

In January 2012 the filmmakers visualised thisurban myth in a short video that was published onYouTube. A week later, almost a million people hadwatched it and an enormous media buzz was gen-erated. Most o the viewers actually believed that

the Yugoslav president Tito had saved USAs repu-tation in the space race. This myth is explored inthe film through the senior engineer in the allegedYugoslav space programme. The story o the filmis based and inspired by numerous real events andacts. The space programme and the documentarydiscourse are the narrative tools recounting a sym-

story o manipulation, lies, dirty political games,and media construction. However, the films mostimportant message is how similar events still hap-pen today in the modern society and how terriblyeasy it is to manipulate an audience.

shapes us into what we really are?

The stories narrated by the film bring together in-dividuals all over the world, spanning over sixtyyears and thus symbolically covering the approxi-mate period o a single human lie. Each o the sto-ries is based on true accounts and events, summedup rom newspaper articles, statements, and medi aannouncements. Through internal monologues thecollage makes up a whole which transcends any in-dividual story.The filmPerseveranceis homage to lie at its tough-est. The mosaic o ates presents the experience ohuman lie in all its depth o emotions, its sensual,memory, and ideological wealth. It is a collage omoments we are unwilling or incapable to discuss,a mosaic o memories and secrets we keep to our-selves. It is a film about the cacophony o reality,

where the tragic is contrasted with the banal, thesublime with the proane, cruel with beautiul, andcrowded with lonely.

Preservance tries to discuss all o this and by nomeans keeps quiet about all o us, either.

Their son Saa (38) lives with his parentshaving spent the war in the Army o Bosnia andHerzegovina. He had never got over his wartimelove a journalist Nina, who had inected him withHepatitis C. His health has been permanently dam-aged. Saas sister Senada (40) lives in Ljubljana,

and throughout the film she is just a voice over thephone, her advice rom ar away occasionally irri-tating. Their lives begin to disintegrate with Mu-hameds dissatisaction with the sale o his com-pany at the stock exchange, Saas irresponsibleattitude towards his job and amily, and Marijasdiscovery that she has breast cancer. For a whole year rom November to Novem-ber the camera ollows Ulay, a conceptual art-ist rom Amsterdam. Ulay is one o pioneerso body art, perormance art and polaroid art,but he is most amous or his longterm collabo-ration with Marina Abramovi and their per-ormances that have achieved iconic status.

In 2009 Ulay moved to Ljubljana. When talks andplans with regard to the film were already under-way, Ulay was diagnosed with cancer, and every-thing changed. The first scenes were shot in No-

vember 2011 at the Ljubljana Institute o Oncology,where Ulay underwent chemotherapy. When hishealth improved slightly, he decided to visit hisriends around the world and the camera ollowedhim on this so-called arewell journey: to Berlin orthe premiere o Marinas film, then to New York,and finally to his beloved Amsterdam. Ulay treatedhis illness as the biggest a nd most important projecto his lie, hence the title o the fi lm:Project Cancer.

In 1971 the 28 year-old K.G. took his camera, trav-elled across Vojvodina (at that time part o Yugo-slavia), and shot an unusual road trip film I Havea House (Imam jednu kuu). Only ragments o thisfilm have been preserved to this day. Forty yearslater another camera treads the same path, recon-structing and imagining the original journey.

Damir Avdi is an artist o words who speaks aboutthe world as he sees and understands it. Withoutany superfluous comments. Words as sharp as arazor blade, as straight as a bullet, as honest as aheart. The documentary The Elderly Parasiteis the worko Janez Burger, a director liked by the critics aswell as viewers. He and the crew o TV Slovenijafilmed Marko Brecelj during workdays towards theend o 2012, and it took the director and the cleverCzech editor virtuoso Milo Kalusek three monthsto assemble their work. The filmmakers had a vast

quantity o archive shots made by the Association othe Friends o Moderate Progress at their disposal,and the statements by the prominent members othe Slovenian or postYugoslav cultural and popularscene provided icing on the cake. The film takes thegeneral public opinion and expectations into ac-count rather than the selfimage and lie choices othe person it portrays. However, it is undoubtedly acredible, witty and almost humanised presenta-tion o a difficult man who has requently managedto divide the public with his sot terrorism in thelast decades, also outside the borders o our stateselsufficiency. The film was completed with defi-cient unds, but it nevertheless received (so ar) theawards o the expert juries in Paklenica (Croatia)and Portoro (Slovenija) in autumn 2013.

The Familyollows Matej (14-21 years old) over thecourse o seven years. At the age o 14 he already hadto take care o his mentally challenged parents andhis brother, born with the Down syndrome. Matejspent his youth isolated rom his peers and lost in

virtual reality, trying to escape his problems. As atthe age o 20 he became a ather himsel, it seemshe had been able to transcend the lie patterns andcreate his own amily with his girlriend and theirdaughter. But this idyllic lie had only lasted twomonths, until Barbara let him. Currently theyare fighting over the custody o their daughter

Home: one o the shortest words describing theeeling o homeliness. Home is the centre, every-day haven, sometimes a temple o small habits.The documentary film with this title ocuses onthe very opposite o these pleasant connotations.The home or workers by the railroad track is onlycalled that. It is mostly occupied by constructionworkers who had worked in the bankr upt construc-

tion companies. They live or linger on an almost in-visible li ne, bordering g rey economy and i llegalityat its dangerous side. The building is also home toa large concentration o personal crises and desti-nies written by the economic crisis. The Bosnianworkers who had built Slovenia in the years o pros-perity are now handicapped or difficult to employ.Even though they live at the social bottom withoutany rights or precisely because o it they are atelling reflection o what goes on in the Sloveniansociety. The film ollows their everyday bachelorlives in the bleak threebed rooms with joint bath-rooms, and presents their outlook on the decline oSlovenia as a model regional economic orce.

M ET O D P EV EC (1958, Slovenia), director and screen-writer, writer/novelist and actor. Beore and duringhis studies o philosophy and comparative litera-ture, in the 1970s and 1980s, he starred in several

Slovenian and Yugoslav eature films and TV se-ries. Among them, several collaborations with theSerbian director ivojin Pavlovi were the most im-portant, including the Slovenian eature filmFare-well in the Next War(1981). Pevec has also writtenseveral novels and a collection o short stories.
