2. Description

2.1 Use of the product as directed

The SF 144-A is a hand-held, cordless drill/driver for driving and removing screws and for drilling in steel,wood and masonry.

The SFH 144-A is a hand-held, cordless hammer drill/driver for driving and removing screws, for drilling insteel, wood and masonry and for hammer drilling in lightweight concrete and masonry.

Working on materials hazardous to the health (e.g. asbestos) is not permissible.

Do not use the battery as a power source for other unspecified appliances.

Modification of the power tool or tampering with its parts is not permissible.

To avoid the risk of injury, use only genuine Hilti accessories and insert tools.

Observe the information printed in the operating instructions concerning operation, care and maintenance.The power tool is designed for professional use and may be operated, serviced and maintained only by trained,authorized personnel. This personnel must be informed of any special hazards that may be encountered. Thepower tool and its ancillary equipment may present hazards when used incorrectly by untrained personnel orwhen used not as directed.

5. Safety rules

NOTE

The safety rules in section 5.1 contain all generalsafety rules for power tools which, in accordancewith the applicable standards, require to be listed inthe operating instructions. Accordingly, some of therules listed may not be relevant to this tool.

5.1 General safety rules

WARNING! Read all instructions!Failure to follow allinstructions listed below may result in electric shock,fire and/or serious injury. The term power tool inall of the warnings listed below refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated(cordless) power tool. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS.

5.1.1 Work area safety

a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered anddark areas invite accidents.

b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmo-spheres, such as in the presence of flammableliquids, gases or dust.Power tools create sparks

which may ignite the dust or fumes.c) Keep children and bystanders away while oper-

ating a power tool.Distractions can cause you tolose control.

5.1.2 Electrical safety

a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Nevermodify the plug in any way. Do not use any

adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) powertools.Unmodified plugs and matching outlets willreduce risk of electric shock.

b) Avoid body contact with earthed or groundedsurfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges andrefrigerators.There is an increased risk of electricshock if your body is earthed or grounded.

c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet con-ditions.Water entering a power tool will increasethe risk of electric shock.

d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord forcarrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool.Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edgesor moving parts. Damaged or entangled cordsincrease the risk of electric shock.

e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use anextension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of acord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk ofelectric shock.

5.1.3 Personal safety

a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and usecommon sense when operating a power tool. Donot use a power tool while you are tired or underthe influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. Amoment of inattention while operating power toolsmay result in serious personal injury.

b) Use safety equipment. Always wear eye pro-tection. Safety equipment such as dust mask,

non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing pro-tection used for appropriate conditions will reducepersonal injuries.

c) Avoid accidental starting. Ensure the switch isin the off-position before plugging in. Carryingpower tools with your finger on the switch orplugging in power tools that have the switch oninvites accidents.

d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench beforeturning the power tool on. A wrench or a key leftattached to a rotating part of the power tool mayresult in personal injury.

e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and bal-

ance at all times. This enables better control ofthe power tool in unexpected situations.

f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing orjewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and glovesaway from moving parts.Loose clothes, jewelleryor long hair can be caught in moving parts.

g) If devices are provided for the connection of dustextraction and collection facilities, ensure theseare connected and properly used. Use of thesedevices can reduce dust-related hazards.

5.1.4 Power tool use and care

a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correctpowertool for your application.Thecorrectpowertool will do the job better and safer at the rate for

which it was designed.b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not

turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot becontrolled with the switch is dangerous and mustbe repaired.

c) Disconnect the plug from the power sourceand/or the battery pack from the power toolbefore making any adjustments, changing ac-cessories, or storing power tools. Such prevent-ive safety measures reduce the risk of starting thepower tool accidentally.

d) Storeidle power tools out of the reach of childrenand do not allow persons unfamiliar with thepower tool or these instructions to operate the

power tool. Power tools are dangerous in thehands of untrained users.

e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment orbinding of moving parts, breakage of parts andany other condition that may affect the powertools operation. If damaged, have the powertool repaired before use. Many accidents arecaused by poorly maintained power tools.

f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properlymaintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edgesare less likely to bind and are easier to control.

g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bitsetc., in accordance with these instructions andin the manner intended for the particular typeof power tool, taking into account the workingconditions and the work to be performed.Use ofthe power tool for operations different from thoseintended could result in a hazardous situation.

5.1.5 Battery tool use and care

a) Ensure the switch is in the off position before

inserting battery pack.Inserting the battery packinto power tools that have the switch on invitesaccidents.

b) Recharge only with the charger specified by themanufacturer. A charger that is suitable for onetype of battery pack may create a risk of fire whenused with another battery pack.

c) Use powertools only withspecifically designatedbattery packs.Use of any other battery packs maycreate a risk of injury and fire.

d) When battery pack is not in use, keep it awayfrom other metal objects like paper clips, coins,keys, nails, screws, or other small metal objectsthat can make a connection from one terminal toanother. Shorting the battery terminals together

may cause burns or a fire.e) Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejec-

ted from the battery, avoid contact. If contactaccidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquidcontacts eyes, additionally seek medical help.Liquid ejected from the batterymay cause irritationor burns.

5.1.6 Service

a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualifiedrepair person using only identical replacementparts.This will ensure that the safety of the powertool is maintained.

5.2 Additional safety instructions5.2.1 Personal safety

a) Wear ear protectors with impact drills.Exposureto noise can cause hearing loss.

b) Use auxiliary handles supplied with the tool.Loss of control can cause personal injury.

c) Always hold the power tool securely with bothhands on the grips provided. Keep the grips dry,clean and free from oil and grease.

d) Improve the blood circulation in your fingers byrelaxing your hands and exercising your fingersduring breaks between working.

e) Avoid touching rotating parts. Switch the powertool on only after bringing it into position atthe workpiece.Touching rotating parts, especiallyrotating drill bits, discs or blades, etc. may lead toinjury.

f) Activate the safety lock (forward / reverse switchin the middle position) before storing or trans-

porting the power tool.

5.2.2 Power tool use and care

a) Secure the workpiece. Use clamps or a viceto secure the workpiece. The workpiece is thusheld more securely than by hand and both handsremain free to operate the power tool.

b) Check that the insert tools used are compatiblewith the chuck system and that they are securedin the chuck correctly.

5.2.3 Battery tool use and care

a) Do not expose batteries to high temperatures orfire.This presents a risk of explosion.

b) Batteries must not be opened or dismantled,

squashed, heated to temperatures over 100Cor incinerated. A risk of fire, explosion or in-jury through contact with caustic substances mayotherwise result.

c) Do not use batteries other than those approvedfor use with the applicable power tool or appli-ance.Use of other batteries or use of the batteryfor purposes for which it is not intended presentsa risk of fire and explosion.

d) Observe the special instructions applicable to thetransport, storage and use of Li-ion batteries.

e) Avoid short circuiting the battery terminals.Check that the terminals on the battery and inthe power tool are free from foreign objects beforeinserting the battery in the power tool. Short cir-cuiting the battery terminals presents a risk of fire,explosion and chemical burns.

f) Do not charge or continue to use damaged bat-teries (e.g. batteries with cracks, broken parts,bent or pushed-in and/or pulled-out contacts).

5.2.4 Electrical safety

Before beginning work, check the working area(e.g. using a metal detector) to ensure that noconcealed electric cables or gas and water pipesare present. External metal parts of the power toolmay become live, for example, when an electric cableis damaged accidentally. This presents a serious riskof electric shock.

5.2.5 Work area

a) Ensure that the workplace is well lit.

b) Ensure that the workplace is well ventilated.Exposure to dust at a poorly ventilated workplacemay result in damage to the health.

5.2.6 Personal protective equipment

The user and any other persons in the vicinity mustwear suitable eye protection, a hard hat, ear pro-tection, protective gloves and breathing protectionwhile the power tool is in use.

6. Before use

6.1 Battery use and care

NOTE

Battery performance drops at low temperatures.Never use the battery until the cells become fullydischarged. Change to the second battery as soonas a drop in performance is noticed. Recharge thebattery immediately so that it is ready for reuse.

Store the battery in a cool, dry place. Never storethe battery where it is exposed to direct sunlight orsources of heat, e.g. on heaters / radiators or behind amotor vehicle windscreen.Batteriesthat havereachedthe end of their life must be disposed of safely andcorrectly to avoid environmental pollution.

6.2 Charging the battery

DANGER

Use only the Hilti batteries and Hilti chargers listedunder Accessories.

6.2.1 Charging a new battery for the first time

A new battery must be charged correctly for thefirst time before use. This will ensure that the cellsform correctly. Incorrect initial charging may have apermanent, negative effect on batterycapacity. Pleaserefer to the applicable battery chargers operatinginstructions for information about initial charging.

6.2.2 Charging a previously used battery

Ensure that the outer surfaces of the battery areclean and dry before inserting it in the correspondingcharger.

Read the operating instructions for the charger forfurther information about the charging procedure.

Li-ion batteries are ready for use at any time, evenwhen only partly charged. Charging progress is in-dicated by the LED display (see charger operatinginstructions).

6.3 Fitting the batteryCAUTION

Before fitting the battery, check that the power toolis switched offand that thetransportlock is engaged(forward/reverse switch in the middle position). Useonly the Hilti batteries approved for use with thispower tool.

CAUTION

Check that the terminals on the battery and in thepower tool are free from foreign objects beforeinserting the battery in the power tool.

1. Push the battery into the power tool from belowas far as it will go and until it is heard to engagewith a click.

2. CAUTION A falling battery may present a risk ofinjury to yourself or others.

Check that the battery is seated securely in thepower tool.

6.4 Removing the battery 2

1. Press both battery release buttons.

2. Pull the battery downwards out of the power tool.

7. Operation

CAUTIONThe tool may get hot during use. Wear protectivegloves.

CAUTION

The power tool may suddenly swing to the side(rotate about its own axis) when drilling, hammerdrilling or screwdriving. Always use the power toolwith the side handle fitted and hold it securely withboth hands.

CAUTIONTo avoid injuries caused by the insert tool, wearprotective gloves when changing insert tools.

7.1 Setting forward or reverse rotation 3

NOTE

The forward / reverse switch is used to select thedirection of rotation of the drive spindle. An interlockprevents switching while the motor is running. Thecontrol switch is locked when the forward / reverseswitch is in the middle position. Push the forward /reverse switch tothe right (power tool held in workingdirection) to select forward rotation. Push the forward

/ reverse switch to the left (power tool held in workingdirection) to select reverse rotation.

7.2 Adjusting the side handle 4

1. Release the side handle clamping band by turningthe handle counterclockwise.

2. Pivot the side handle into the desired position.

3. Tighten the side handle by turning the grip clock-wise.

4. Check that it holds securely.

7.3 Speed selection

7.3.1 Speed selection using the 2-speed gearswitch (SF 144-A) 5

NOTE

The mechanical 2-speed gear switch can be used toselect the speed range required. Speed with fully-charged battery. 1st gear: 0380 r.p.m. or 2nd gear:01440 r.p.m.

7.3.2 Speed selection using the 3-speed gearswitch (SFH 144-A) 6

NOTE

The mechanical 3-speed gear switch can be used toselect the speed range required. Speed with fully-charged battery. 1st gear: 0350 r.p.m., 2nd gear:01360 r.p.m. or 3rd gear: 01900 r.p.m.

7.4 Switching on / offCAUTION

To avoid damage to the power tool, the switch mustbe released (switched off) if the motor is stalled formore than 2-3 seconds. After stalling, the powertool must be allowed to run for 2 minutes under noload.

The speed of the power tool can be controlledsmoothly (increased from zero to maximum) bypressing the control switch gradually.

7.5 Drilling

CAUTION

Use clamps or a vice to secure the workpiece. Theworkpiece is thus held more securely than by handand both hands remain free to operate the powertool.

7.5.1 Fitting the drill bit

1. Set the forward / reverse switch to the middle

position or remove the battery from the powertool.

2. Check that the connection end of the drill bit isclean. Clean the connection end if necessary.

3. Insert the drill bit in the chuck and then turn thechuck sleeve until tight.

4. Check that the drill bit is held securely (check bypulling).

7.5.2 Drilling

1. Move the forward / reverse switch to the For-ward position.

2. Turn the torque and operating mode setting ringto the drilling symbol.

7.5.3 Removing the drill bit

1. Set the forward / reverse switch to the middleposition or remove the battery from the powertool.

2. Open the quick-release chuck.

3. Pull the insert tool out of the chuck.

7.6 Hammer drilling (SFH 144-A)

7.6.1 Fitting the drill bit


2. Check that the connection end of the drill bit is

clean. Clean the connection end if necessary.3. Insert the drill bit in the chuck and then turn the

chuck sleeve until tight.

4. Check that the drill bit is held securely (check bypulling).

7.6.2 Hammer drilling

1. Move the forward / reverse switch to the For-ward position.

2. Turn the torque and operating mode setting ringto the hammer drilling symbol.

7.6.3 Removing the drill bit

7.7 Screwdriving

7.7.1 Fitting the bit / bit holder


2. Insert the bit adapter in the chuck and then turnthe chuck sleeve until tight.

3. Check that the bit adapter is held securely (checkby pulling).

4. Fit the bit in the bit holder.

7.7.2 Screwdriving

1. Set the forward / reverse switch to the desireddirection of rotation.

2. Turn the torque and operating mode setting ringto the desired torque value.

7.8 Reading the charge status LED display onLi

ion batteries 7

NOTEThecharge status cannot be indicated while the powertool is in operation. Indication is given (LED 1 blinks)only when the battery is fully discharged or when it istoo hot (temperature above 80C).

The Li-ion battery features a charge status LED dis-play.The chargestatusis indicated bythe LEDs onthebattery during charging (please refer to the operatinginstructions for the charger). When the battery is atrest (not in use), its charge status is indicated by thefour LEDs on the battery for a time of three secondsafter pressing one of the battery release buttons.

8. Care and maintenance

CAUTION

Before beginning cleaning, remove the battery fromthe power tool in order to prevent unintentionalstarting.

8.1 Care of insert tools

Clean off dirt and dust deposits adhering to the inserttools and protect them from corrosion by wiping theinsert tools from time to time with an oil-soaked rag.

8.2 Care of the power toolThe outer casing of the power tool is made fromimpact-resistant plastic.Sections of thegrip are madefrom a synthetic rubber material.

Never operate the power tool when the ventilationslots are blocked. Clean the ventilation slots carefullyusing a dry brush. Do not permit foreign objects toenter the interior of the power tool. Clean the outsideof the power tool at regular intervals with a slightly

damp cloth. Do not use a spray, steam pressurecleaning equipment or running water for cleaning.This may negatively affect the electrical safety of thepower tool. Always keep the grip surfaces of thepower tool free from oil and grease. Do not usecleaning agents which contain silicone.

8.3 Care of the Li-ion battery

Avoid entrance of moisture.

Charge the battery fully before using it for the first

time.In order to achieve maximum battery life, stop dis-charging the battery as soon as a significant drop inperformance is noticed.

NOTE

If use of the power tool continues, further batterydischarge will be stopped automatically before thebattery cells suffer damage.

Charge the battery with the Hilti charger approved foruse with Li-ion batteries.

NOTE

- A conditioning charge (as is required with NiCd orNiMH batteries) is not necessary.

- Interruption of the charging procedure has no neg-ative effect on battery life.

- Charging can be started at any time with no negativeeffect on battery life. There is no memory effect (aswith NiCd or NiMH batteries).

- For best results, batteries should be stored fullycharged in a cooldry place. Avoid charging the batteryin places subject to high ambient temperatures (e.g.

at a window) as this has an adverse effect on batterylife and increases the rate of self-discharge.

- If the battery no longer reaches full charge, it mayhave lost capacity due to aging or overstressing. Itis possible to continue working with a battery in thiscondition but it should be replaced in good time.

8.4 Maintenance

WARNING

Repairs to the electrical section of the power toolmay be carried out only by trained electrical spe-cialists.

Check all external parts of the power tool for damageat regular intervals and check that all controls operatefaultlessly. Do not operate the power tool if partsare damaged or when the controls do not functionfaultlessly. If necessary, the power tool should berepaired by Hilti Service.

8.5 Checking the power tool after care andmaintenance

After carrying out care and maintenance work onthe power tool, check that all protective and safetydevices are fitted and that they function faultlessly.

9. Troubleshooting

Fault Possible cause Remedy

The power tool doesnt run. The battery is discharged or fittedincorrectly.

The battery must engage with anaudible click or, respectively, needsto be charged.

Electrical fault. Remove the battery from the powertool and contact Hilti.

No hammering action. The torque and operating modesetting ring are not set to thehammer drilling symbol.

The on / off switch cant bepressed, i.e. the switch islocked.

The forward / reverse switch is inthe middle position (transport lockengaged).

Push the forward / reverse switchto the left or right.

Running speed suddenlydrops considerably.

The retaining lugs on the battery aredirty.

Clean the retaining lugs and checkthat the battery engages securely.

Contact Hilti Service if the problempersists.

The power tool or the batterygets very warm.

Electrical fault. Switch the power tool off imme-diately, remove the battery andcontact Hilti Service.

The power tool has been overloaded(application limits exceeded).

Use the right power tool for the job(dont use a low-powered tool forheavy work).

10. Disposal

CAUTION

Improper disposal of the equipment may have serious consequences: The burning of plastic componentsgenerates toxic fumes which may present a health hazard. Batteries may explode if damaged or exposed tovery high temperatures, causing poisoning, burns, acid burns or environmental pollution. Careless disposalmay permit unauthorized and improper use of the equipment. This may result in serious personal injury, injuryto third parties and pollution of the environment.

CAUTION

Dispose of defective batteries without delay. Keep them out of reach of children. Do not attempt to open ordismantle batteries and do not dispose of them by incineration.

CAUTION

Dispose of the batteries in accordance with national regulations or return them to Hilti.

Most of the materials from which Hilti tools or machines are manufactured can be recycled. The materials mustbe correctly separated before they can be recycled. In many countries, Hilti has already made arrangementsfor taking back your old tools for recycling. Please ask your Hilti customer service department or Hiltirepresentative for further information.

Disposal of electric tools together with household waste is not permissible.

In observance of European Directive 2002/96/EC on waste electrical and electronic equipment

and its implementation in accordance with national law, electric tools that have reached the endof their life must be collected separately and returned to an environmentally compatible recyclingfacility.

11. Manufacturers warranty - tools

Hilti warrants that the tool supplied is free of defectsin material and workmanship. This warranty is validso long as the tool is operated and handled correctly,cleaned and serviced properly and in accordance withthe Hilti Operating Instructions, and the technicalsystem is maintained. This means that only originalHilti consumables, components and spare parts maybe used in the tool.

This warranty provides the free-of-charge repair orreplacement of defective parts only over the entirelifespan of the tool. Parts requiring repair or replace-ment as a result of normal wear and tear are notcovered by this warranty.

Additionalclaims are excluded, unlessstringentna-tional rules prohibit such exclusion. In particular,

Hilti is not obligated for direct, indirect, incidentalor consequential damages, losses or expenses inconnection with, or by reason of, the use of, orinability to use the tool for any purpose. Impliedwarranties of merchantability or fitness for a par-ticular purpose are specifically excluded.

For repair or replacement, send the tool or related

parts immediately upon discovery of the defect tothe address of the local Hilti marketing organizationprovided.

This constitutes Hilti's entire obligation with regardto warranty and supersedes all prior or contempor-aneous comments and oral or written agreementsconcerning warranties.
