Gospel: Matthew 5: 17-37 or 5:20-22A Today's Gospel from Matthew is one of the most intense accounts of the way Jesus changed things. "You have heard it said" he begins each part of his teaching and then goes on to say, "But I say to you." He does what he said he would do--not abolishing the laws of God--but fulfilling them. He never says, "You have heard it said you shall not kill but I say it's okay." On the contrary, Jesus teaching requires more-do not be angry or name-call. In fact, Jesus says, if you are going to offer your gift at the altar and remember that your brother has anything against you, leave the gift and go be reconciled. We are called to keep the commandments, of course, but we are called to more. 1.) Which of Jesus' teachings in today's Gospel do you find most diffi-cult? It is a great compliment to be called "a person of his/her word." Who would you name as such a person? What "yes" that God asks is most challenging for you? What "no" that God asks is easiest for you?

Reflections ~ Reflexiones Pastor’s Message: Today we begin to prepare for the Archbishop’s Annual Ap-peal. The AAA is our annual opportunity as members of the larger Church to assist our own parish and contribute to the ministries, programs and offices of our Archdiocese. We ask that you prayerfully consider your pledge or gift to help our Archdiocese fulfill its mission.” “This year our parish is asked to contribute $75,000.00. In the past we have had good partici-pation and I encourage everyone to consider his or her pledge. Keep in mind that when we exceed our goal, one hundred per-cent of the funds paid over our goal will be returned to our par-ish. This year our parish hopes to use rebate funds to do repairs to the “Church and Parish office. We have placed envelopes in the pews today for you to indicate your pledge. Additional enve-lopes can also be found in the vestibule. If you are able to assist with your time to help with the Appeal efforts, please leave your name and contact information at the parish office. On behalf of the Archbishop, I thank you for your consideration and generous past support throughout the years.” Rev. Eugene Tungol Pastor

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
