Safety in the sewing Room

• Work quietly

– Too much talking will distract you and your neighbor causing you to make a mistake or hurt yourself.

–When talking at your table, use a quiet voice

• Use your time wisely

–Projects are to be completed in class

Organizational Safety

• Keep your supplies in your assigned cubby

• Return any borrowed sewing supplies to the front table.

• Always pick up after yourself

• Throw away all unusable scraps

• Trim usable scraps and put them in the scrap box

It is very important that safety is observed when operating sewing machines and equipment.

Shears, scissors and seam rippers have sharp blades that can harm others when handled

incorrectly.

Remember the following tips:

• When passing scissors, offer them the handles.

• When you set your scissors down, you should close them so the edges aren’t exposed.

• Never horseplay with scissors

Pins

Pins are used to hold objects in place. Use the following precautions when handling pins:

• Never place pins in your mouth, sleeve, or any other object other than a pin cushion.

• When stitching a pinned seam, be sure to stitch carefully and remove as you are sewing

• Should you puncture your skin, notify the teacher immediately.

Other Sharp Objects

There are other sewing tools that have sharp points or edges. Use the following safety precautions:

• Only use tools for their intended purpose.

• When handling sharp objects, cut away from you

• If an emergency arises, notify the teacher immediately.

Irons

When ironing and pressing, be sure to use the following safety precautions:

• Keep your fingers and face away from the steam.

• When the iron is not in use, rest it on it’s heel.

• Be careful not to get anything caught in the cord and knock it over.

• Use the iron on an ironing board.

The Sewing Machine• When you are just learning to operate the

sewing machine, you should use a slow speed.

• Only place your foot on the foot pedal when sewing.

• Your foot should NOT be on the foot pedal when you are not sewing

• The further you press your foot, the faster the machine will sew

you should refer to the instruction manual. If the instruction manual is not available, do not attempt to solve the problem, ask your teacher.

General Concerns

• Keep floor area clean to prevent accidents.

• Place all backpacks and purses under your cutting tables or chairs to keep the surface available to cut fabric

• DO NOT place backpacks and purses in your sewing area
