DRAGNET
Do you remember the show, Dragnet? “Ladies and gentlemen the show you are about to see is true. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.” I
used to love to watch this show when I was a kid. To see Sgt. Joe Friday and his partner Bill Gannon methodically track down criminals and catch them at their own bad deeds. Then to see that justice was delivered to the bad guys at the end of the show, “On July 10th trial was held in the Supe-rior Court in the City of Los Angeles, State of California. In a moment the results of that trial.” It was a great show.
Well, in today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that He is going to cast out the dragnet to round up the innocent and guilty at the end of age and to pronounce judgment on the guilty. Except, at this time, Jesus is going to be the judge and His angels are going to be Joe Friday and Bill Gannon.
What will be found out about our lives at the end? Will we be like the people St Paul talks about in the second reading today? Will we have answered God’s call according to His purpose, or have we filled our lives with our own agendas?
If you have watched Dragnet, you remember that Sgt. Friday was always looking for, “just the facts, ma’am.” The amazing thing is that one fact always remained true. All the criminals convicted were always putting their agendas first. They always put their needs and wants before others. God’s purpose never entered into their hearts and minds.
As we go through life, I would like to believe we all are working towards the end result of the Kingdom of Heaven. However, as I look around the world today, I see so many people that are not Christ-centered whatsoever. They are me-centered, with no thoughts of Christ at all.
We have to remember that as we seek out the Kingdom of Heaven, we have to seek out more than what our human gratification can give us. It is not always about our own agendas. We have to empty our-selves for others just like Christ did. We must center our lives on Christ’s teachings, crucifixion, and resurrection.
One way to help ourselves to become Christ-centered is to take a little time at the end of each day to examine our conscience to see what we have done for others. We have to see the good that we have done, and the not so good.
Find some quiet time and space for reflection.
Become aware of God’s presence in your life.
Pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance.
Read through your list of what you have done today. Be honest, re-flect on the items.
You may find things on your list you need to seek forgiveness for in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Forgive yourself, and forgive others.
Look forward to tomorrow. What will the facts be when we stand before Jesus in His court-
room? Will there be wailing and grinding of teeth? Or will we be found to have been Christ-centered and our names will be changed to protect the innocent? What truth will the facts reveal?
On some day in the future, in the Superior Court of Jesus Christ, in the Kingdom of Heaven, trial was held for Gary Wilhelm to see if he lived a Christ-centered life. In a moment the results of that trial….
Deo gratias, Deacon Gary
