Lectio: Mary With Dr. Brante Pitre: Dr. Brante Pitre examines what scripture, the life of Christ, and the early Church fathers reveal about Mary. By closely examining the connection between the Old and New Testament, Dr. Pitre presents clear and easily understood explanations about the life and identity of Mary, the Mother of God.

SAINTLEOPOLDMANDÍC(1866–1942)ApostleofConfessionandApostleofUnityFeastday-July30

Western Chris ans who are working for greater dialogue with Orthodox Chris ans may be reaping the fruits of Father Leopold’s prayers. A na ve of Croa a, Leopold joined the Capuchin Franciscans and was ordained several years later in spite of several health problems. He could not speak loudly enough to preach publicly. For many years he also suffered from severe arthri s, poor eyesight and a stomach ailment. Leopold taught pathology, the study of the Church Fathers, to the clerics of his province for several years, but he is best known for his work in the confessional, where he some mes spent 13-15 hours a day. Several bishops sought out his spiritual advice. Leopold’s dream was to go to the Orthodox Chris ans and work for the reunion of Roman Catholicism and Orthodoxy. His health never permi ed it. Leopold o en renewed his vow to go to the Eastern Chris ans; the cause of unity was constantly in his prayers. At a me when Pope Pius XII said that the greatest sin of our me is "to have lost all sense of sin," Leopold had a profound sense of sin and an even firmer sense of God’s grace awai ng human coopera on. Leopold, who lived most of his life in Padua, died on July 30, 1942, and was canonized in 1982.

A SHARE IN GOD’S KINGDOM

Today concludes a three-week series of Gospel texts in which we have listened to a total of seven parables about the Kingdom. The believer is asked to consider the request that God made of Solomon in today’s first reading: “Ask something of me and I will give it to you” (1 Kings 3:5). Today’s parables about the treasure buried in the field and the pearl of great price should prompt us to answer, “A share in your kingdom, O God!” Today we discover that the kingdom of God is beyond value, a priceless treasure. Unfortunately, our culture bombards us with things that it believes are priceless treasures—the bigger and be er SUVs, an -aging and an -balding creams and salves, miracle diets, and so much more. Having a share in God’s kingdom and helping to bring about that kingdom are the greatest treasures that we can ever hope to gain.

The Immaculate Heart of Mary Council 17083 Knights of Columbus recently held a Food and Personal Hygiene Products Drive to support the Lord’s Ranch. Their ministry serves the poor in Juarez, Mexico. Over 300 pounds of food and hygiene products along with $1540 in monetary dona ons were collected over a couple of weeks. Mike and Maryann Halloran from the ranch were overwhelmed and very grateful for our efforts. They explained that when the supplies were given out at their clinic in Juarez, folks took it home and then shared what they had just received with their neighbors. Mul plica on of the loaves and fish? We are helping our neighbors help their neighbors. If you would like to join the Knights of Columbus or would like more informa on about our mission, please contact Jimmy at 575.644.6293. Viva Cristo Rey!

From the Religious Education Office

Parents of the youth preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation in August, remember that we have an information meeting this Wednesday, July 29 at 6:30 pm in Finley Hall. You and your youth candidate are expected to attend; the sponsor would also be welcome if that is possible. Remember to wear a mask and practice social distancing.

Parents of children waiting for their first celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, do keep them practicing their prayers and thinking about how they live their lives in reference to the Ten Commandments. You will be receiving information about possible dates and times for their Confession by the end of the month.

Parents of all children that were enrolled in the parish program for the 2019-2020 school year (other than those children that were preparing for their First Communion) we have your children’s religion books that we would like to get to you! Please call 524-8563 for pick up: 1) in the parish office, 2) in the foyer of the Cathedral on an upcoming weekend, or 3) in Finley Hall this Wednesday, July 29. When you call ask for (or leave a message for) either Cordy or Joanna. You can also email Joanna at [email protected]. As well, parents with children in Kindergarten – Sixth Grade, and even through Eighth Grade, check out the Loyola Press CHRIST OUR LIFE materials for families at:

https://www.loyolapress.com/faith-formation/christ-our-life/christ-our-life-2016/parents-and-students/ We are all wondering about the possibilities for religious formation as we go forward. Stay tuned!

LivingGod’sWordThere is li le in life that we can control, and certainly not faith or a sense of God’s presence or wisdom or any such things. They all require pa ence, and they are all discovered with a sense of pure gi . It’s almost as if God plans it that way.

Re lectingonGod’sWordIn his book Live and Learn and Pass It On, H. Jackson Brown, Jr. has published some lists of the lessons that people have learned in life. These contain one-liners that capture the wisdom gained by youngsters and oldsters through their everyday adventures. Clearly these sayings give expression to the voice of experience.

So why does it take so long to come upon such wisdom? Why can’t it be issued to us when we’re born? It would be so much easier. But that’s not how it happens. The wisdom has to find us.

The reign of God, too, seems to find us rather than the other way around. At least that’s what the Gospel this Sunday seems to suggest when it compares the reign of God to a treasure found buried in a field. Treasures tend to find us, some mes even when we’re actually searching for them, as in the Gospel’s tale of the fine pearl. That’s why Solomon needed to lean on God for some wisdom, because he couldn’t come to it on his own. It’s also why parents can’t make their children believers, because faith finds us. In fact, some folks would suggest that most of the really valuable things we wait for are all part and parcel of God’s reign, things like love or wisdom or the joy that comes with the perfect job or the child you’ve been wai ng for. In one way or another, God’s reign finds us.
