SEVENTEENTHSUNDAY AFTER

PENTECOST

SECOND ORDER OF

HOLY COMMUNION

Page 119

WELCOME

SENTENCE OF THE DAY

Whoever wants to be first must be last of all

and servant of all.

Mark 9. 35

OPENING HYMN

And Can It Be

And can it be that I should gain

an interest in the Saviour's blood?

Died He for me, who caused His pain?

For me, who Him to death pursued?

Amazing love! how can it be

that Christ, my God,

should die for me!

‘Tis mystery all!

The immortal dies:

who can explore His strange design?

In vain the first-born seraph tries

to sound the depths of love divine,

‘Tis mercy all! Let earth adore,

let angel minds inquire no more.

He left His Father's throne above

so free, so infinite His grace

emptied Himself of all but love,

and bled for Adam's helpless race.

‘tis mercy all, immense and free;

for, O my God, it found out me!

Long my imprisoned spirit lay

fast bound in sin and nature's night;

thine eye diffused a quickening ray;

I woke,

the dungeon flamed with light;

my chains fell off, my heart was free.

I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

No condemnation now I dread;

Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!

Alive in Him, my living Head,

and clothed in righteousness divine,

bold I approach the eternal throne, and

claim the crown, through Christ, my own.Charles Wesley (1707–1788)

THE GREETING

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God’s kingdom now and forever.

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

PRAYER OF PREPARATION

Almighty God,to whom all hearts are open, all desires known,and from whom no secrets are hidden:cleanse the thoughts of our heartsby the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,that we may perfectly love you,and worthily magnify your holy name,through Christ our Lord. Amen.

‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one;you shall love the Lord your Godwith all your heart, and with all your soul,and with all your mind,and with all your strength.’Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it:You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

THE TWO GREAT COMMANDMENTS

CONFESSION

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, with a sincere and a true heart.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,

and in what we have failed to do:we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

ABSOLUTION

Almighty God, who promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: Pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

HYMN OF PRAISE: THE GLORIA

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God's people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

God and Father of all,You have taught us through your Sonthat the last shall be first,and have made a little child the measure of your kingdom: give us the wisdom from above, so that we may understand that in your sight the one who serves is the greatest of all.We ask this through Lord, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever and ever. Amen.

COLLECT (PRAYER OF THE DAY)

JAMES 3. 1-18 LPB 1883

HYMN BEFORE THE GOSPEL

BROTHER SISTER LET ME SERVE YOU

Brother, sister, let me serve you,let me be as Christ to you;

pray that I may have the grace tolet you be my servant too.

We are pilgrims on a journeyand companions on the road;

we are here to help each otherwalk the mile and bear the load.

I will hold the Christ-light for youIn the night-time of your fear;I will hold my hand out to you,

Speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping;When you laugh I’ll laugh with you;

I will share your joy and sorrowTill we’ve seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heavenWe shall find such harmony,

Born of all we’ve known togetherOf Christ’s love and agony.

Brother, sister, let me serve you,Let me be as Christ to you;

Pray that I may have the grace to Let you be my servant too.

Richard Gillard 1977

A Reading from MarkChapter 9, Verses 30-37

Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ

For the Gospel of the Lord,Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ,

God’s only Son, our Lord,who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,born of the virgin Mary,suffered under Pontius Pilate,was crucified, died, and was buried;he descended to the dead.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

On the third day he rose from the dead;he ascended into heaven,and is seated at the right hand

of the Father;from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit,the holy catholic Church,the communion of saints,the forgiveness of sins,the resurrection of the body,and the life everlasting. Amen.

PrayersLet us pray for the world and for the

church.Lord in your mercy, hear our prayers.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers.

Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life

John 3. 16

THE GREETING OF PEACE

We are the body of Christ.

His Spirit is with us.

The peace of the Lord be always with you

And also with you.

OFFERTORY HYMN

Breathe on me breath of God,fill me with life anew,

that I may love what thou dost love, and do what thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, breath of God,until my heart is pure,

until with thee I will one will,to do and to endure.

Breathe on me, breath of God,till I am wholly Thine,

until this earthly part of meglows with Thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, breath of God,so shall I never die,

but live with Thee the perfect lifeof thine eternity.

Edwin Hatch (1835 – 89)

Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation.

Through your goodness we have these gifts to share.Accept and use our

offerings for your GloryAnd for the service of

your kingdom.

Blessed be God for ever.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere,mighty Creator, everliving God.

We give you thanks and praise for our Saviour Jesus Christ,who by the power of your Spirit was born of Maryand lived as one of us.

By his death on the crossand rising to new life,he offered the one true sacrifice for sinand obtained an eternal deliverance for his people.

Therefore with angels and archangels,and with all the company of heaven,we proclaim your great and glorious name,for ever praising you and saying:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,Heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest.

Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine,and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit,we who eat and drink themmay be partakers of Christ's body and blood.On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread;and when he had given you thankshe broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,

'Take, eat. This is my body given for you.Do this in remembrance of me.‘After supper, he took the cup,and again giving you thankshe gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink from this, all of you.This is my blood of the new covenantshed for you and for manyfor the forgiveness of sins.Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.‘Christ has died.Christ is risen.Christ will come again.

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded:proclaiming his offering of himselfmade once for all upon the cross,his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension,and looking for his coming again,we celebrate, with this bread and this cup,his one perfect and sufficient sacrificefor the sins of the whole world.

Renew us by your Holy Spirit,unite us in the body of your Son,and bring us with all your peopleinto the joy of your eternal kingdom;through Jesus Christ our Lord,with whom, and in whom,in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,we worship you, Father,in songs of never-ending praise:

Blessing and honour and glory and powerare yours for ever and ever. Amen.

As our Saviour has taught us we are confident to pray,

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven.Give us today our daily bread.Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

THE LORD'S PRAYER

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

The gifts of God for the people of God.

Come let us take this holy sacrament

of the body and blood of Christ

in remembrance that he died for us,

and feed on him in our hearts

by faith with thanksgiving.

HOLY COMMUNION

All visitors are welcome

to come forward to receive

Communion.

Holy Communion Hymn: Like the Murmur of the Doves Song

Like the murmur of the dove’s song,like the challenge of her flight,

like the vigour of the wind’s rush,like the new flame’s eager might:

come, Holy spirit, come.

To the members of Christ’s body,to the branches of the Vine,

to the church in faith assembled,to its midst as gift and sign;

come, Holy Spirit, come.

With the healing of division,

with the ceaseless voice of prayer,

with the power to love and witness,with the peace

beyond compare:come, Holy Spirit,

come.

Words Carl P. Daw Jr. 1944-
