Welcome to Issue two of Seven, Newquay’s beach and lifestyle magazine. Firstly we’d like to say thank you for all of the fantastic feedback we’ve had from the fi rst issue. We distributed 15,000 copies across Newquay and Cornwall to hotels, campsites, activity centres and other businesses and have received a huge swell of support and some really positive feedback.

Whilst the town was busy and buzzing with atmosphere throughout the summer months, we were hard at work creating this second issue,to inspire you to make the most of Newquay, our beaches and natural beauty, our quirky independent shops, fantastic fresh produce and love for outdoor living and activities.

While Newquay may be famed for its bustling summer season, we want to show all of the amazing things on off er in autumn and winter. The vast empty beaches, windswept coastal walks and cosy coff ee shops off er the perfect venues and activities to ensure winter in Newquay is far from dull.

The CribbarBreaking just off Towan Headland, the Cribbar is famed for its rarity, only breaking during huge Atlantic swells when experienced surfers are towed-in to monstrous waves. Watch and be amazed as skilled surfers attempt to conquer waves of up to 30ft in height – a feat for the highly experienced and, arguably, just plain crazy.

First surfed in 1966 by American Jack Lydgate, local legends including Ben Skinner and Russell Winter have all conquered the mighty Cribbar. So, wrap up warm and head to towan headland to take in what is widely acclaimed as Newquay’s most spectacular natural sight when rumour of its arrival hits town.

A new Wave Bar opensNewquay’s newest bar, The Cribbar, is a stylish addition to Newquay’s town centre. Check out the eye catching features around the pub like the ‘pop’ coloured men’s urinals, surfboard resin tables, and the outdoor chesterfi eld-inspired sofas made from concrete! Images from the acclaimed surf history book ‘The Surfi ng Tribe’ have been screen printed onto tiles at the front of the 16 foot long bar, and there’s also a specially installed screen to watch live world tour contests. Bonkers at BoardmastersNewquay was packed to the hilt for the Boardmasters again this summer. With three solid days of surfi ng they just had enough swell to see guadeloupe’s Charly Martin crowned the Boardmasters 2012 winner. In the longboard fi nal local legend Ben Skinner was up against three French surfers who gave him a hard time, but he managed to take second place and received an enthusiastic reception from the local crowd.

With the surfi ng over it meant everyone could enjoy the music and the Watergate site saw an unprecedented number of people attend over the two nights. Friday night witnessed the mellow sounds of Ed

Sheeran, while on Saturday night the huge crowd went bonkers for Dizzee Rascal. good times all round!

Fish Festival a great success!Hundreds of seafood lovers headed to the harbour for the tenth annual Newquay Fish Festival from 14-16th September. top chefs whipped up a storm using the freshest local fi sh under the gaze of hungry eyes, while live music, rock pool roadshows and sandcastle competitions kept everyone entertained. Saturday night’s extravaganza, Phil’s Fish and Chip Ball, was a new addition to the festival and the highlight of the weekend for many, with not a soggy chip in sight.

Float on!Nowhereisland, the fl oating rock island from the Arctic, visited Newquay in August during its tour of the south west as part of the olympic celebrations. the travelling embassy which accompanied Nowhereisland on its journey took up residence for the day, encouraging people to sign up to become citizens of the island nation. A fl otilla of surfers, kayakers, gigs, boats and members of the Newquay Surf Life Saving Club paddled out to the rock as did a stand up paddleboarder with his dog Pebbles! Nowhereisland then fl oated past up the coast en route to its journey’s end at Bristol…

golden Screening honours 50 years of British surfi ngTo celebrate the ‘golden’ anniversary of 50 years of modern day surfi ng in Newquay, the British surfi ng community came together in Newquay on 25 August for a free ‘Big Seaside Screening’ of the classic surf fi lm The Endless Summer. Locals and visitors alike gathered together on the headland overlooking Fistral Beach in Newquay to pay homage to the pioneers of surfi ng.

Despite some heavy rain earlier in the day, the turnout for the screening was great. “It didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits – surfi ng is a wet sport after all!”said Newquay Business Improvement District Manager Eve Wooldridge, who with Event Cornwall hosted the screening. “Just as the gates opened the sun came out which was followed by a beautiful sunset over Fistral, signalling the start of a brilliant evening. the surf community really pulled together to celebrate this important anniversary and showed just how much we all value the sport here in Newquay. We’ve had great feedback from everyone who came and we’ve already had calls for a similar event next year.”

Cooking, Surfi ng and Living the DreamA couple who met in Cornwall have written a book inspired by their twin passions of cookery and living by the sea, The Surf Café Cookbook. Jane and Myles Lamberth met when they were working at the headland hotel in Newquay. they spent subsequent summers working in restaurants in Newquay, and winters working ski seasons. But eventually they felt the need to put some roots down, so they relocated to the west coast of Ireland and opened their own place, Shells Café.

Among the fi rst visitors to the café was Louise Searle, editor of Seven and Surfgirl Magazine based in Newquay. She saw that Jane and Myles had something very special going on at Shells and decided it would make a great story. Six months later the book was fi nished and is now selling around the world.

Pro Surferrob machado one of the world’s greatest surfers, rob Machado, graced Newquay with this presence in August. Rob presented his fi lm Melali – the Drifter Sessions to a packed audience at the Lighthouse Cinema on Friday night. the next day he took 65 local children surfi ng at Fistral for Hurley’s Rip My Shred Stick and spent hours in the sea teaching children to surf. Then he was off to fi t in a signing session at North Shore surf shop.

Newquay has seen many a surfi ng superstar over the years but rarely has one left such an impact: it was that good!

ENDLESS WINtER At the end of August the surf fi lm Endless Winter premiered on the beach at Fistral. Endless

Winter features two Newquay surfers, Mitch Corbett and Mark harris, as they venture around the country hunting for waves and rediscovering surfi ng’s roots. As Newquay is the hub of surfi ng in the UK, there’s plenty of interviews with local surfers including Roger Mansfi eld, Russell Winter, Spencer hargreaves, and local board shaper Nigel Semmens amongst others.

NEWQUAY RoWING CLUB

the town may be famed for its reputation as the surfing capital of the UK, but rowing has long been

considered one of the jewels in Newquay’s crown and the town’s historic rowing club continues to represent the sporting talent of Newquay’s dedicated gig rowers. home to Cornish Pilot gig rowing, the Newquay Rowing Club stands as one of the longest running sporting clubs in the town’s history. Established in 1921, the NRC is the

oldest club on the gig rowing circuit, acting as a pioneer for the sport for centuries. Based at the harbour, the NRC consists of men’s, ladies’ and junior teams who regularly host gig championships and compete across Cornwall

and the Isles of Scilly.And while rowing remains at

the forefront of the NRC’s history, it is the members - who are Newquay characters in their own right – that inject fun-loving hilarity to the club’s reputation. From the ‘bionic’ female rowers, to burly, third generation fishermen, Newquay Rowing Club currently has over 100 rowing members of all ages who are out on the water most days of the week during the rowing season.

Like many of the club’s devotees, Elizabeth Burnett, member of the Newquay Ladies rowing team, has lived in Newquay all her life, rowing since childhood. “Rowing has always been a part of my life,” she explains. “Whether it’s mid-week training, competing in championships or just drinks with the other members in the evening – there’s a great local vibe and being a member of the Newquay Rowing Club has always

been one of the most central parts of my life in Newquay.”

But it’s not just the rowing that gives the NRC its famed local reputation. the club is perhaps as recognised for its vibrant social scene. An average night sees everyone joining-in with age-old Cornish sing-songs, traditions, banter and entertainment. Newquay’s history, heritage and laidback local culture is, undoubtedly, everywhere you look.

While the members and social scene represent the charm and personality of Newquay’s gig rowing custom, the gigs themselves are treasured relics that have lived longer than the club itself. The fi rst pilot gig ever made - aptly named Newquay – remains at Newquay Rowing Club, dating back to 1812

and is still used in competition today. the third oldest NRC gig, the ‘Treff ry’, is also something of a ‘celebrity’ in that all modern racing gigs are based on its specifi cation and it is still owned and raced by the Newquay Rowing Club.

Now, ninety years on from the fi rst ever gig race, Newquay’s fi nest rowers have competed in hundreds of events, claiming coveted titles in the process including fi rst place in the World Championships in the men’s veterans category in 2009, fi fth out of over 100 crews in the 2006 Men’s World Championships and previous fi rst place titles in the World Championships and County Championships in the women’s category. these accolades, along with their infamous reputation for a good time and tradition to boot,

The headland

hOTelthe headland is one of Newquay’s most iconic landmarks. We met

owner Carolyn Armstrong for a chat about life at the hotel.Words by Steve engLand

The Headland Hotel stands proud above the golden sands of Fistral. Its terracotta bricks glowing warmly in the sunset, from an era

where architects built elegant, grand designs to last. It’s a fanciful place for an evening cocktail on balmy summer evenings, a fortress, and a haven from winter’s Atlantic gales and the horizontal rain. tall, strong, and unique, it is the most recognisable hotel in the south west, probably in the country.

It was built to be the finest hotel in the country. Ironically in 1897 locals rioted against its construction, but its long history has seen royals and fashionistas from many decades entertained by the finest orchestras, and film stars gracing its many luxurious rooms. Inside the hotel has a warm feel and an elegance lacking in many more modern constructions. tall ceilings, airy rooms, and character. In part this is due to the Victorian layout, but in any building the ambience is created by the people that love and frequent it. In the case of the Headland this is Carolyn and John Armstrong.

In 1979 the hotel had seen better days, but the newly married couple had fallen in love with the place after their engagement party in its ballroom. the couple made an enormous decision: to sell everything they had and dedicate themselves to making it the best hotel in Cornwall. they were 23 at the time. “People have said we were brave,” says Carolyn, “But at the time we didn’t really think so. And there were people who said we would never succeed, but we just got on with it.” In over 30 years they have invested over £25 million, and taken the business from a seven month summer retreat with 12 staff, to a year round escape with over 100 staff employed at the hotel. And success has meant expansion; now there’s a new wellness area – part of an

extensive ongoing development programme which will be completed in the spring – to join the stylish cottages which were another popular addition.

the ambiance of the hotel is a money-can’t-buy asset, Carolyn puts this down to the staff. “We invested heavily in people and training, but it is their character that makes the hotel a welcoming place. you can have the most qualified staff available, but if they are not of a friendly disposition our guests are not going to feel welcome. It is more like a family really.” Carolyn even insists the hotel’s several regularly reported ghosts from the headland’s time as a hospital are of a similar character. “I think they are trying to look after us,” she says. “I have never felt threatened in any way.”

guests of the more mortal fame have included Rowan Aktinson, who managed to flood three floors of the hotel and was “More like Mr Bean, than Mr Bean”, David Bailey shooting for Italian Vogue, Sir John Mills and Catherine Zeta Jones and Angelica Houston while shooting for the Roald Dahl film “The Witches”. Plus several other regulars that Carolyn prefers to keep discreet.

When asked what her favourite aspect of the headland was over the years Carolyn said, “I love the fact we have guests who return year on year. That the children that came as babies and toddlers now choose to stay with their wives or husbands and their own families – this gives us all a warm feeling, especially when they have chosen to get married here. It’s all very emotional and the headland is part of the happy memories of the families. It’s a wonderful place and I think John and I made the right decision all those years ago.”

Ever wondered what it would be like to get a closer look at your favourite animals at the zoo? Well, take a walk on the wild side and unleash your inner David Attenborough at Newquay Zoo.Slightly out of his comfort zone, local

big wave surfer, tom Butler is much more at home when tackling gigantic waves and far less familiar with being Dr Doolittle. While surfi ng and zoo keeping don’t exactly go hand in hand, Cornwall’s biggest zoo gives anyone who has ever wanted to get up close to the animals a unique opportunity.

Newquay Zoo, which is open year round, has launched its quirky ‘Animal Encounters’ that allow visitors to step into the shoes of a zookeeper and feed Newquay’s funniest and friendliest wildlife. tom took a little trip to the zoo to test out their experiences…

Pick up a penguinWhile you can’t really pick the penguins up, the zoo’s Penguin Encounter is truly amazing. Create your own frozen planet experience and get up close and personal with South America’s fi nest. “Feeding the penguins was amazing. As soon as they saw the bucket of fi sh they went

mental – especially the greedy penguin who wouldn’t leave me alone!”

“My favourite penguin had to be Pickle though. he’s hand reared and came in for a cuddle. He’s defi nitely not camera shy – he was lapping up all the attention!”

Laugh with a lemur Put a surfer and a photographer on an island with a group of hyper lemurs and let the hilarity ensue. these crazy creatures, who originate from Madagascar, are certainly not wallfl owers and provided endless entertainment as they grabbed, climbed, jumped and hopped their way from the trees to tom’s head and shoulders. “Lemurs are defi nitely my new favourite animal,” he says. “They’re hilarious and I loved hanging out with them.”

So, what was tom’s verdict? “I’ve always liked animals but have never really got the chance to get up close to them so it was great to feed them and learn more about penguins and lemurs.”

“I won’t be giving up surfi ng for being a full time zoo keeper any time soon, but I’ve loved having the chance to try it out. Plus, it’s something cool and diff erent to do on a boring winter’s day.”

NIChoLAS ChARLES WILLIAMS – thE ARtISt IN thE LIFEBoAt StAtIoNThe Financial Times art critic, William Packer, described him as ‘one of British Art’s well-kept secrets’, but Nicholas Charles Williams is still relatively enigmatic to the people of Newquay – where he has painted in the shrouded intimacy of his ultra-cool maritime studio for decades.

For as long as I’ve lived in Newquay, the lifeboat station has always seemed to be something of a mystery. Many pass by it on the way to the beach, without as much as a

glance. However, if passers-by take the time to look more closely, the old lifeboat station is actually the studio of acclaimed figurative painter, Nicholas Charles Williams.

Williams is a painter and draughtsman whose work reflects aspects of life and human behaviour, and has based himself from Newquay for 30 years, painting from the historic lifeboat station at Little Fistral for over 20 years. Celebrated for his unique style that stays true to the Baroque period, but with a modern angle, Williams’ paintings seem as though they are from another generation. Dark, symbolic and utterly mesmerising, it’s strange to think these powerful pieces are created from the unbeknown interior of the lifeboat station.

having painted since childhood, Williams describes his passion and love of art as a “compulsion.” After studying a foundation course in Art at Richmond, Williams was gripped by the surfing bug and ventured to Newquay to pursue his two main loves – painting and surfing. Ever since, Williams has mastered his craft for the last twenty years from the solace of his maritime hideaway studio at the lifeboat station at Little Fistral.

As interesting as the man himself, Williams explains how he stumbled upon the unique studio: “I was intrigued at first sight,” he says. “The fact that it has no natural light made it perfect for my style of painting. Most painters need natural light, but having control of the light source makes it perfect for me and the big doors mean I can get my paintings in and out of the studio with ease.”

“It’s also the heritage that I really liked,” he adds. “It’s cohesive to my work. I was really drawn


to how peaceful and quiet it is and is connectedness to history. Plus, there’s the balance of the surroundings outside - it was a major draw to have a surf break right on my doorstep.”

As a resident of Newquay, Williams is a keen surfer – perhaps hinting at his choice of studio location. For a painter/surfer, this gem of a ‘work place’ is enough to make any beach lover envious and the view from the small window upstairs on the mezzanine floor is a swell-seekers dream for checking out if Little Fistral is pumping. And while many may be surprised that such a celebrated artist bases himself from Newquay, rather than London or other cosmopolitan cities, Williams explains that he likes the reality of Newquay and living within such close proximity to the sea and vast countryside.

While art may be his passion, it’s also carved him a successful career. Williams has garnered substantial praise and recognition for his work, with works in the collection of the British Museum, London and solo exhibitions at the Royal Cornwall Museum, truro and the Russell-Cotes Art gallery & Museum, Bournemouth. he has also seen huge successes including exhibitions of his work at prestigious events including the Capital of Culture in Liverpool in 2008. Reflecting on this, Williams says, “Exhibiting my work at Liverpool Cathedral for the Capital of Culture was great as the

audience was huge and it’s always nice to bring focus back to Newquay.”

It doesn’t take long for me to realise that Nick Williams is as down to earth as Newquay itself and his personality as far removed from the perceived pretentiousness of the art scene as you can get. What’s more, it becomes obvious that not only is he passionate about art and surfing, but he actually cares a great deal about Newquay, the community and the local art scene. Williams praised Art 8’s debut this year: “Art 8 was a fantastic export for the town,” he says. “I really think that there’s a lot to be said for art in Newquay and it’s something I’d definitely like to see more of in the future.”

Artist, surfer and all-round nice guy, Williams is as intriguing as his work and studio, and a fantastic example of the talent and quirkiness that Newquay, and those who live here, represent.

Method: • To make the Hollandaise Sauce, place yolks in a small bowl, add the vinegar. With a stick blender or a whisk slowly add in the melted butter. When blended add the mustard and stir in with a spoon.• Place a poaching pan on to simmer, season with salt and pepper & a little vinegar, poach the egg.• At the same time sautee the black pudding, bacon and tomato in a pan and cook through.• Stack the black pudding, bacon and tomato in the middle of a plate, top it with the egg.• Drizzle the Hollandaise on top of the stack and a little around the plate. Finish off with a little grated cheese. Grill for a minute.• Serve whilst hot.

Method: • First pan - add carrot, onion, celery, garlic and butter to the pan. Then sweat until onions become soft and translucent.• Add stock, cream, mustard and lemon juice. Cover and when mussels open add to the chowder sauce in the other pan.• Bring the contents to the boil. tricks of the tradeFish and chips are an institution and they rarely taste the same if you make them yourself. So we asked Alain Thain of Truscott’s for his tips on how to make the perfect homemade chip.

If I started to tell any one how to cook the perfect chip I would probably be shouted down! the best way to cook your chip is your way. Some people like brown chips other like them lighter. Some people like stodgy chips others like them crisp. It doesn’t matter it’s your chip! Sounds like I’m trying to cop out of a proper answer? No!

I’ll start again. If you want a chip shop chip here’s how.1. First, pick a good quality potato: maybe Maris Piper or King Edward? Ask at your supermarket which spud they recommend. Most potatoes that have a yellow flesh make a really good chip.2. Peel the spud and remove any bad bits, eyes or any greying.3. Cut the chips into a regular size, the thicker the chip the less fat or oil it will absorb. 4. Wash the chips in cold water to remove any excess starch.5. Dry the chips in a clean cloth or paper. this is very important.6. If you put wet chips into hot fat you could have the fat over the side of the pan. This is not good! Possible risk of fire!7. I’m assuming that most people who fry chips at home have an electric fryer with preset temperature controls. heat your fryer up to about 190 degrees.8. Let’s say you are cooking for four people. BLANCh the chips for about three minutes. then remove chips onto a piece of kitchen cloth or towel. Allow the fryer to regain it’s temperature. 9. When you are ready to eat, just cook off the chips for about a minute and serve. Let whoever is going to eat the chips salt them themselves. only they know how much salt and vinegar they like.

With this in mind I gave the sports massage a try at the Beach Shack, a laid back salon on Fore Street. Troublesome areas like my legs were worked on fi rst with a medium strength massage. then I went for a deep, powerful massage on my back and shoulders which released tension and restricted joint movement plus it helped to disperse the knots in my shoulders. It felt good afterwards – I genuinely felt about a stone lighter and felt less restricted in my joints. If you’re looking for a really good back massage this is it: the hot Stones Massage at the new Ooh la la Spa in the Hotel Victoria. It’s diff erent to other back massages in that the therapist uses hot stones as part of the treatment. the stones feel really hot as they’re massaged into your back, getting much deeper into your problem areas than a regular massage. Afterwards I felt like all the tension had been soothed away from my body. once the nights start to draw in and things aren’t as balmy as they were during the summer months, my choice of outdoor pursuits starts to become a bit, well, limited. So what’s there to do during the autumn? Something that will get my adrenalin pumping without breaking the bank? in pursuit of something different to do I spent the day at retallack, problem solved!

Based just outside of Newquay, Retallack Resort and Spa is home to Cornwall’s only permanent Flowrider – a wave simulator which allows people of all ages and abilities to have a go at surfing this artificial wave in conditions that are safe and controlled for novices and experienced riders.

Donning our wetsuits, we made our way to the Loop for a one hour session. our instructor, as with all of the staff at Retallack, was friendly and helpful – not to mention patient considering I am not exactly a proficient surfer. But it turns out that doesn’t matter. Seeing a group of 10 year olds making it look easy spurred me on to give flowriding a go and I’m glad I did. I’ll admit I’m definitely not keen on the idea of surfing in winter and duck-diving icy cold waves, so the Loop was ideal. Plus, once you’ve had a go, you can hop into the Jacuzzi to warm up before your next attempt. This was definitely

my kind of surfing.After an hour of turns, belly rolls and a few attempts

at standing up, we made our way up to the restaurant to refuel. overlooking the Flowrider, relaxing in the restaurant is the perfect way to recharge the batteries. So we filled up on delicious, value-for-money burgers and sandwiches as we watched the next group of novices take to the Loop.

As we finished our lunch it was safe to say we were pretty knackered, but our winter’s day out was far from over. heading over to the other side of the resort, we

prepared for what must be my new favourite activity – wake boarding. Retallack recently installed their brand new system 2 cable Wake Park, situated on the main lake at Retallack Resort. our brilliant instructor – former British Wake Boarding Champion, Jules haley, eased us into our first attempt and by the time our hour was up, we were left wanting more.

By the end of the day we were exhausted but buzzing after what turned out to be a brilliant day. Retallack has made me warm up to the possibilities of having fun and staying active after the summer and I will definitely be heading back. the Wake park at retallack closes at the end of october and reopens next spring. retallack resort is open through the winter. Berties Brings out the Stars

in August Berties nightclub had a massive bank holiday line up which went down a storm with visitors and locals alike. pendulum dJ paul harding and mc Verse took to the decks on Friday and when you talk about dance music not many bands are bigger than pendulum. Formed during 2002 by three musicians from Western australia with similar visions and musical backgrounds, pendulum’s mission has always been to pull together their production resources, ideas and infl uences from various styles of music, to create a new sound that they felt was missing from dance music. And since then Pendulum has become one of the defi ning bands of the international festival circuit (including phenomenal receptions from crowds at Glastonbury, download, isle of Wight and t in the park festivals).

The awesome Pendulum dJ set on Friday was followed by McFly’s danny Jones dJing on the saturday night at the club. Mcfl y have notched up no less than 7 uk number one singles and a staggering 17 top ten hits and, alongside the band, danny is a keen house dJ and electronic

producer and has been working in the studio with legendary DJ Roger Sanchez. Mcfl y’s lead singer sent clubbers into a spin when he made his debut appearance as a dJ in newquay. danny’s high energy set brought the house down and was a fi ne end to the run of celebrity dJs at Berties this summer.
