Elective Subject Selection

Introduction: • At Seven Hills High School, over Years 9 and 10 you are required

to complete 500 hours of ELECTIVE studies.

• Two elective subjects are studied for 200 hours. (i.e. 2 years - OVER Years 9 and 10). These are the A and B Electives.

• One elective subject is studied for 100 hours (i.e. in Year 9 ONLY). This is the C Elective.

• You must complete three elective subjects. One will terminate at the end of Year 9 (C Elective) while the other two will continue until the end of Year 10 (A and B Electives).

• The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) requires you to study at least one of your elective subjects for 200 hours if you wish any of your elective choices to appear on the Record of School Achievement.

• If a student chooses to undertake the NSW Department of

Education approved elective course, iSTEM, they need to understand that the course will not be listed on their RoSA.

• This booklet gives an overview of each of the subjects offered.

The associated cost is for each year the subject is studied. This cost will be invoiced.

• Choose the three subjects you would like to study over Years 9 and 10.

• Choose two backup elective subjects in case you do not get one of your first three choices.

• There is no guarantee that all the subjects listed in this booklet

will run next year. Sufficient students must elect to study the course before a class will be formed.

• Subject selection preferences are due back to the school between Monday 30th August and Friday 3rd September, 2021. They will be lodged by completing a proforma online. Ms Macan Deputy Principal

SUBJECT INFORMATION AND ANNUAL COSTS

Aboriginal Studies Cost: Nil The aim of Aboriginal Studies is to develop an understanding of Aboriginal peoples, cultures and lifestyles and their contributions to Australian society. Students will be empowered to explore and celebrate the cultural and social heritage of Indigenous Australians. They will gain pride and cultural affirmation through the study of their local/regional community and through the study of Aboriginal cultural diversity. Students will value and appreciate the diversity of Aboriginal cultures, experiences and perspectives, the dynamic nature of Aboriginal cultures, and the importance of social justice and equity. Agricultural Technology Cost: $40

Agriculture is the raising of crops and animals to provide food, fibre and other raw materials needed by society. Agriculture is a critically important industry in Australia, providing food and materials for domestic consumption and also export revenue. As a subject, Agriculture is an applied science demanding knowledge of the fundamental science upon which it is

based, arriving at an understanding of the three major factors in agricultural production - the soil, the plant, and the animal.

So that the students may appreciate fully the theoretical aspects of the subject, the school provides the necessary facilities for practical work, both in the classroom and in the field. Areas of study may include: the raising of poultry, landscaping, hydroponics, vegetable production, sheep and goat husbandry, beef and dairy production, farm mechanics, fish farming, honey production and also hobby farming skills.

Elective History Cost: Nil

Elective History can be studied for the Record of School Achievement. It investigates the events and cultures that have influenced our present-day societies. Students will have the opportunity to unlock mysteries from the past and learn about famous heroes and villains. Through the use of technology students will refine their research skills and explore ancient civilisations. This course is

different to the mandatory History course and offers students interested in History the chance to pursue further study.

Chinese Cost: Nil

This course enables students to further develop fluency in the language of Chinese and enhance their understanding of the Chinese culture. Emphasis will be placed on listening, reading, writing and speaking in the Chinese language. Students will continue to build on their character writing ability in accordance with syllabus requirements.

Commerce Cost: Nil Commerce enables students to develop an understanding of our changing commercial and legal world. Students will learn about managing money, budgeting, buying a car, running a business. On the Legal side students will learn about the origins of law, the idea of justice, consumer protection and have the opportunity to experience through both excursions and mock trial the reality of the Australian legal system.

Dance Cost: $30

Dance has been designed to enable students to explore the exciting world of human movement, performance, composition and appreciation. Students are able to compose perform and appreciate dance. This course is designed for students who are motivated and willing to work hard in both individual and group settings. The 200 hour course enables students to grasp a solid understanding of the elements of dance and focus intensely on technique and performance. Dance involves both theory and practical aspects. No prior dance experience is required as the course caters for all levels.

The study of Food Technology provides students with a broad knowledge and understanding of food properties, processing, preparation and their interrelationship, nutritional considerations and consumption patterns. It addresses the importance of hygiene and safe working practices and legislation in the production of food. Students will develop food-specific skills, which can then be applied in a range of contexts enabling students to produce quality food products. It also provides students with a context through which to explore the richness and pleasure that food adds to life and how it contributes to both vocational and general life experiences.

Drama Cost: Nil

Drama is a course that develops important skills for life such as negotiation, co-operation, communication and self-confidence. Students are encouraged to be creative and reflect on both their own and others’ performances from both sides of the stage. Viewing and Appreciating Productions is the key aspect of this course and students will be encouraged to attend theatre excursions regularly. Performance skills of evaluation,

interpretation, character building, improvisation and play building are other elements.

Food Technology Cost:$100

Elective Geography Cost: Nil

The Elective Geography course provides students with the opportunity for additional learning through engagement with physical and human Geography content. It provides students with a broader understanding of the discipline of the subject. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the processes that form and transform the physical world, our environments and our country. The Elective course enables students who have an interest in this subject area to further develop their knowledge and understanding of Geography. iSTEM Cost: $40

The iSTEM elective provides opportunities for students to study a variety of themed units of work focusing on the application of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to real life, through inquiry-based learning techniques. It incorporates mechatronics, aerodynamics, engineering, 3D CAD/CAM, aerospace and motion. This elective also provides students with the opportunities to use current

technologies including 3D printers, virtual reality, drones, robotics and a range of intelligent systems. Industrial Technology – Metal

Cost: $70

Metal Technology is essentially a practical course that provides students with the opportunity to design & make a variety of products including tools, tables, weight equipment, sheet metal products and automotive activities. It provides opportunities for students to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in the use of materials, tools and techniques related to metal machining, fabrication and automotive. Skills are taught which lead to enjoyable and profitable leisure activities, DIY and provide senior school and vocational pathways.

Mathematics (Elective) Cost: Nil

The Mathematics elective course is designed to support students undertaking the 5.3 Pathway. It will reinforce student understanding of complex abstract ideas and ensure more time is spent on concept reinforcement. The Mathematics elective course will only run in Year 9 as a 100 hour elective. This is a school developed course that equips students with the skills to be successful in senior school. The Mathematics elective course will not

appear as a subject studied on the Record of School Achievement. Music Cost: $40

The elective Music course enables students to explore the world of music in a practical and enjoyable way through performing, listening and creating music. Students will develop skills in digital composing, learn to play keyboards and guitar in class and will be given the opportunity to extend any performing skills they already have. Through studying, playing and listening to music in a wide variety of styles (classical through to rock and pop) students will have a deeper appreciation of music as well as create a basis for further study and development.

Industrial Technology – Timber

Cost: $70

Timber Technology is a practical course that provides students with the opportunity to design and make a variety of products including kitchenware, tables, storage units, cabinets, boxes and other furniture. It provides opportunities for students to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to the timber and associated industries. Skills are taught which lead to

enjoyable and profitable leisure activities, DIY and provide senior school and vocational pathways.

Photographic and Digital Media Cost: $40

This course offers students the opportunity to explore traditional photography and the contemporary fields of digital photography, film making, video and computer-based imaging. In the practical component of the course, students will learn technical qualities and skills inherent in the production of photographs and digital works. Students will also study the

work of a range of photographers and digital artists and use these investigations to develop their own work. As students work towards the development of a portfolio, they will be involved in photo shoots, research, workshops, demonstrations and exhibitions. Physical Activity and Sports Studies Cost: $40

Physical Activity and Sports Studies provides for a comprehensive study of physical activity and movement. It incorporates a study of the way the body functions and how to prepare to move efficiently in a variety of contexts. It includes study of the social issues related to physical activity and its role in the lives of the individual and Australian

society. It also has a focus on moving with skill in order to achieve performance goals. This course is designed for students who like to focus on exercise and sport by improving and extending their PDHPE skills. As this is a practical course, students will be required to bring a PDHPE uniform to class and actively participate in the practical components of the course.

Textiles Technology Cost: $50

The study of Textiles Technology provides students with a broad knowledge of the properties, performance and uses of textiles, where fabrics, colouration, yarns and fibres are explored. Students will complete project work involving investigation and experimentation in their choices of textiles for particular uses. They will document and communicate their design ideas and experiences and make use of contemporary technology in their project work. Completion of projects is integral to developing skills and confidence in the manipulation and use of a range of textile materials, equipment and techniques.

Visual Arts Cost: $40

Students will enjoy a wide range of practical activities, linked with historical and critical studies. This will enable them to develop their own visual language to communicate their ideas, values, thoughts, feelings and passions. A variety of mediums will be explored including painting, drawing, sculpture, clay work and print. They will create artworks that are valuable, personal responses to their world. Students will also be given the opportunity to visit different galleries, work alongside experienced artists and have their work exhibited within the school and the wider community.
