Greeting! We will discuss about installing a Windows Server 2016 (trial) on Hyper-V.

As defined:

Hyper-V lets you run multiple operating systems as virtual machines on Windows.

Hyper-V specifically provides hardware virtualization. That means each virtual machine runs on

virtual hardware. Hyper-V lets you create virtual hard drives, virtual switches, and a number of other

virtual devices all of which can be added to virtual machines.

Virtualization allows you to:

• Run software that requires an older versions of Windows or non-Windows operating

systems.

• Experiment with other operating systems. Hyper-V makes it very easy to create and remove

different operating systems.

• Test software on multiple operating systems using multiple virtual machines. With Hyper-V,

you can run them all on a single desktop or laptop computer. These virtual machines can be

exported and then imported into any other Hyper-V system, including Azure.

Most computers run Hyper-V, however each virtual machine runs a completely separate operating

system. You can generally run one or more virtual machines on a computer with 4GB of RAM,

though you'll need more resources for additional virtual machines or to install and run resource

intense software like games, video editing, or engineering design software.

Hardware Requirements

• 64-bit Processor with Second Level Address Translation (SLAT).

• CPU support for VM Monitor Mode Extension (VT-x on Intel CPU's).

• Minimum of 4 GB memory. As virtual machines share memory with the Hyper-V host, you

will need to provide enough memory to handle the expected virtual workload.

The following items will need to be enabled in the system BIOS:

Virtualization Technology - may have a different label depending on motherboard manufacturer.

Setup Hyper V on Windows 10 laptop

By default, Hyper V is not readily available on a Windows 10 OS, we will need to call it via enabling

on Windows Features:

Choose Hyper-V and its components, this will install the application and will take a few seconds.

Upon completion, restart the device.

At a first glance upon calling the application:

It would be recommended to run as administrator:

Once run as administrator, this is how it looks like.

There were no current Virtual Machines installed yet. We will setup one for Windows Server 2016.

for this tutorial, we will just going to grab a trial version which will run for about 180 days (enough

time to work on or get familiarity)

Get the ISO version.

Please note, we can also use this ISO either installing it on Hyper V or Virtualbox

Once ISO has been download, place it on your designated folder

We are now ready to call the ISO in Hyper-V

Installing ISO image in Hyper-V

Open Hyper-V

Click New > Virtual Machine

Open Wizard for your guidance:

Click Next

Specify the VM name and its location.

Specify the generation, for now we will choose Gen1 > click next

Specify the memory to be allocated on the VM. Commonly a 2GB memory is enough, but for this

exercise we will assign 3GB to have some allowance.

Click Next.

We can go back to networking after we setup the ISO, choose default switch, click Next.

Assign a virtual disk space.

For this exercise we will assign a 50GB space.

We will now install the ISO, indicate its current location.

Click Next.

Once everything has been assigned, review the summary setup before click Finish.

This will now proceed on installing the ISO image.

After successful installation, the VM is now ready.

Before turning it on, we will need to setup the Virtual Switch Manager.

Right Click settings > Processor > assign a virtual processor

Click apply

Go to Virtual Switch Manager, choose the type of virtual switch prefer.

For this exercise we will choose external.

Set a name for the virtual switch then click apply.

On the Network Adapter, call the created virtual switch.

We are now ready to turn On the virtual machine.

Server is now ready to install.

Choose items with Desktop Experience so that it will include a GUI.

Click Next.

This will take a while depending on the capacity of your computer.

Initial installation of the Windows Server 2016 in Hyper-V is now set.
