A Note from our Conference ChairWhat do you know about EDNA or Roadrunner?

On October 11, 1972, Nurses from 33 states and 3 Canadian provinces gathered in Buffalo, New York for "Challenge to Change: Chimera or Commitment?” the theme of the first conference. Come and hear the story from Dr. Kluge an orthopedic surgeon who sponsored the EDNA group of nurses. Joanne Fadale past National president and nurse who worked side by side with Anita Dorr in a Buffalo, NY emergency room. Ellen Encapera, ENA Board of Directors and NYS National Liaison. You will hear all about past, present and future! Live the makings of history.

Learn what nurses can do to identify and manage situations that may lead to violence. Presentation by ED nurses Maria Giganti, Sandi Tetler and “hands” on with Sgt. Mark Philippy, of the Brockport Police Department. Connie Kraft will get you through a disaster (no not your regular shift of work)!

For the first time we are offering three sessions for our advanced practice nurses, although the sessions are open to anyone. All bleeding stops with time or bleeds out but Cathy Page will ensure that doesn’t happen. Bones, Bones and more Bones injuries with Marylou Killian. And Audrey Sealey will tell us what test is best for abdominal pain.

The rest of our speakers offer you almost a CEN review of the most current practice issues we are facing. Dr. Burdett guides us into the world of Neurological emergencies through the Neurologist mind… What do one do for pediatric sepsis, Meghan Aldrich takes us A-Z in peds sepsis. Baby birth in the ED, oh no, what do we do, Peggy Ohnmacht will deliver us. Kristen Murphy will follow burns from acute to rehab. See your way in Ocular Emergencies with Dr. Peter Fenton. Two tour Afghanistan Veteran and Fight surgeon PA, Robyn Chalupa will speak on trauma care, casualty evacuation, and transport in a combat zone.

We are so grateful to have Edie Brous back to help us navigate the more recent legal challenges to our practice – threats to our licensure and of course the ever present and now frequent accusations of privacy violations.

Our opening and closing receptions allow you time to talk with our exhibitors and decide which of the many baskets you would like to have a chance to win at the raffle. Proceeds of the raffle go to sustain the NYS ENA 911 Scholarship Fund. Again this year, look for an opportunity to share your research or best practice poster. Last year’s posters were impressive. Have you done a poster presentation for a BSN or MSN class? Please consider sharing it at our conference. Information follows and can be accessed at nysena.org.

We are green, Please register online this year, if you have not done so in previous years. The process has been simplified and you won’t have to make a trip to the post office. Dan Dennis is available via phone or email, should you need assistance. The complete brochure can only be found ONLINE at NYSENA.org. You will be able to download the brochure to share with friends, complete evaluations and register your CE credits. Evaluation and credits will be available online after the conference closes.

Awards are presented each year - this recognizes individual members of the association and other individuals for outstanding contributions to the profession of emergency nursing at its awards ceremony held during the Annual Conference.

Come and join us at this year’s conference on April 10 and 11, meet your peers, discuss current issues, share experiences, celebrate with our outstanding members and have some fun!!!

7:00 am - 4:00 pm Registration

Poster Presentations Posters from your colleagues will be on display throughout the event. 8:00 am - 12:00 pm Pre-Conference Session What ED Nurses can do to Identify & Manage Situations that May Lead to Violence Maria Giganti RN MSN FNP CEN, Sandi Tetler RN BSN, Mark Philippy Sgt EMT-P

We receive education on Trauma, Pediatric and Cardiac Emergencies as part of our credentialing as emergency nurses. Yet many of our hospitals provide little or no information about managing the threat or actual violence we encounter. We know we are at risk as are many others. Join our team for a presentation that will cover the legal aspects of violence in the ED as well as diffusing, responding and personal safety techniques. Let's begin the education and advocacy for being as prepared as we are for our other emergencies.

8:00 am - 12:00 pm Pre-Conference Session Emergency Preparedness Education and Exercises: Are you Ready? Connie Kraft RN MS CEN

Over the past few years we have witnessed directly and through the media, more disasters than many of us could imagine. Whether it is a natural disaster or man-made, it is clear that planning and drilling help us mitigate the response. But planning is not the exclusive role of our management teams. What if you are the charge nurse and unable to reach your team as quickly as you need? Do you know what to do? Have you practiced or been too busy to “play”? Connie will help you define your role as a staff RN or shift leader during a disaster situation and will challenge you to be ready!

Call for Poster Presentations (And Best Evidence Practice Papers)

NYSENA is seeking research and evidence-based practice abstracts that address emergency care issues including clinical, education and injury prevention for presentation at the 2014 conference.

Abstract GuidelinesThe paper and poster sessions are focused on topics that are of interest and importance to nurses, managers, educators, researchers and others who practice in emergency care settings.

Abstracts must reflect either completed projects or projects in the final stages of completion with results available for inclusion in the poster presentation. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, abstracts which address clinical practice, education, research, injury prevention, quality & patient safety, trauma, government affairs, pediatrics, telephone triage, emergency medical services, forensics, etc.

Authors may submit abstracts for more than one paper and/or poster. ENA prefers to accept posters and papers from a variety of authors. A primary presenter is the individual who registers for the conference (registration is required) and who presents the paper or poster at the conference.

This presenter will have their poster hung at the conference but the presenter does not need to stay at poster, they may attend classes at the conference.

Poster Awards Program: Sponsored by the NYSENA, the Poster Awards Program is open to all authors of presented posters (both ENA members and non-members). Two awards will be given out – one for the best Research poster, and one for the best Evidence-based Practice poster. To be eligible for this award, the poster must be set up at the start of the conference - NO exceptions. Additional information is available contact Ivy Budasi Henry at [email protected]
