Setting

• Setting refers to the time and place in which the story takes place.

• Consider:- Physical Setting: time, place, weather, etc.- Social Setting: war, revolution, etc.

• Setting is important – often a character is in conflict with their surroundings.

A setting is described using the 5 senses:•Sight•Sound•Smell•Touch•Taste

• For this homework you have TWO tasks: Reading Writing

Reading Task

Identify the setting.

Choose one of the books you have been reading and

Identify the time of year.

Identify the most important place(s) where key events take place. Now show what you have learned about their importance to the story.

Explain how successful the author was in his/her choice of setting.

Writing Task

Based on what you have learned during the Reading Task, you are to produce a short piece of writing that features your own setting.

For example:“I stepped into the room and coughed at the musty smell that felt like it was already clogging my throat. I looked around. The yellow paint was peeling off the walls in strips and bubbles, exposing the greyish wall beneath. The battered, deep brown wood floors creaked as I stepped farther in. They looked like old blood. Dust webs floated in the air, stirred by the faint breeze I could feel coming in the door behind me.”
