Directions (Q. 51-60): Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it.
Sanitation promotes health through prevention of human contact with the hazards ofwastes as well as the treatment
and proper disposal of sewage waste water. These hazards can be physical, microbiological, biological or chemical agentsof disease. Wastes that can cause health problems include human and solid wastes, domestic wastewater, industrial wastesand agricultural wastes. Hygienic means of prevention can be by using engineering solutions, simple technologies e.g.septic tanks, or even by personal hygiene practices e.g. simple hand washing with soap. In fact, it is essential for childrento survive, grow and develop into healthy and fulfilled citizens of the world. In the broader context, UNICEF’s activities inWater, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. UNICEF’slong standing support for improving water supply, sanitation and hygiene stems from a firm conviction and based onsound evidence that these are central to ensuring the rights of children. Apart from these adequate, well-maintained water supply and sanitation facilities in schools encourage children to attend school regularly and help them achieve their educational goals. Inadequate water supply and sanitation in schools are health hazards and affect school attendance, retention and educational performance. Adolescent girls are especially vulnerable to dropping out, as many are reluctantto continue their schooling because toilet facilities are not safe and somewhere are not available. In rural area women andgirls face a loss of personal dignity and safety risk if there is no toilet at home.
Some other important factors which cannot be ignored- water supply and sanitation in our country continue to
be inadequate, despite longstanding efforts by the various levels of government and communities at improving coverage. The level of investment in water and sanitation, albeit low by international standards, has increased during the 2000s.Access has also increased significantly. The share of Indians with access to improved sources of water has increasedsignificantly, while local government institutions faced lack of the financial resources to carry out their functions. Thusthe lack of adequate sanitation and safe water has significant negative health impacts including diarrhoea.
Another factor is dependency of people on on-site sanitation facilities. Recently, access to on-site sanitation hasincreased in both rural and urban areas. In rural areas, total sanitation has been successful .In urban areas; a good practiceis the Slum Sanitation Program in Mumbai that has provided access to sanitation for a quarter million slum dwellers. InDelhi the sewerage network has lacked maintenance over the years. 2.5 Billion People in the world that defecate openly, some 665 million live in India. This is of greater concern as 88% of deaths from diarrhea occur because of unsafe water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene.
Therefore we can say that Lack of access to adequate sanitation is a huge problem in India. According to UNICEF,about 50% of the country’s population (approximately 638 million people) resort to open defecation. Not only is this aserious health hazard, diarrhea caused by lack of sanitation is a leading cause of death, but there are other problems aswell. For example, the dropout rates of girls in schools are directly related to the unavailability of toilets. Therefore, improvingsanitation will also improve the living and economic conditions of the rural poor.

Directions (Q. 61-70): Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it.
Role of education in our life is vital as it reflects good civilization which spreads awareness in society about how we can
be a good social being and help others in our daily life. Education is also a form of learning in which the knowledge, skills, and
habits of a group of people are transferred from one generation to the next through teaching, training, or research. Education
frequently takes place under the guidance of others, but may also be autodidactic. Any experience that has a formative effect
on the way one thinks, feels, or acts may be considered educational. Right to Education Act (RTE) is an Indian legislation
enacted by the Parliament of India on 4 August 2009, which describes the modalities of the importance of free and compulsory
education for children between 6 and 14 in India under Article 21a of the Constitution. India became one of 135 countries to
make education a fundamental right of every child when the act came into force on 1 April 2010. To provide better education
an amount is released by Indian government every year. The ministry of Finance proposed an allocation of Rs.65,869 crore for
the sector in the Union budget for 2013-14, an increase of a little over 7% from that for the current fiscal year. Of the total
education outlay, the flagship scheme Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) was allocated Rs.27,258 crore for implementing the
Right to Education Act that promises education to all children in the 6-14 age group. The previous Union budget for 2012-13had pegged an outlay of Rs.61,427 crore for education, including Rs.25,555 crore for SSA.But the quality of education
provided by the government system remains in question. As it’s suffering from shortages of teachers, infrastructural gaps
and several habitations continue to lack schools altogether. There are also frequent allegations of government schools being
riddled with absenteeism and mismanagement and appointments are based on political convenience. Despite the allure of
free lunch-food in the government schools, many parents send their children to private schools.
The condition of education is also pathetic in most of the countries i.e. on 9 October 2012; Yousafzai was shot in the head
and neck in an assassination attempt by Taliban gunmen while returning home on a school bus. But they could not succeed.
The assassination attempt sparked a national and international outpouring of support for Yousafzai. Now Yousafzai may
have become “the most famous teenager in the world”. If the Right to Education Act is implemented properly in all schools,
students from the marginalized sections will be greatly benefited. Another important fact is financial support for education.
The student could achieve this feat only because of the scholarship scheme. The Government should make sure that grants
are disbursed on time and deserving students should not have to wait.
