What are Green Buildings

Green Building, also known as green construction or sustainable building, is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle: from site selection, to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and deconstruction.

What are Green Buildings

Benefits:• 15% of Gross Domestic Product or GDP per year

• Green building is a source of significant economic and environmental opportunity.

• Green building has the potential to generate 2.5 million American jobs

• Reduce CO2 emissions by 33 – 39%

• Reduce water usage by 40%

• Reduce Energy Usage by 24 - 50%

What is the USGBC?

The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) is a 501 c3 non-profit organization committed to transforming the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.

Developed the (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™ (LEED)

Page 15: Session One: Introduction to Green Buildings and LEED

LEED Rating System

LEED is a voluntary, internationally recognized green building certification system

Offers third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built aimed at improving performance and reducing environmental impact

Provides building owners and operators a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building solutions

Can be applied to any building type and any building lifecycle phase

Page 16: Session One: Introduction to Green Buildings and LEED

LEED Rating System

LEED is flexible enough to apply to all building types – commercial as well as residential.

Page 17: Session One: Introduction to Green Buildings and LEED

LEED Rating System

Promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in key areas:

Page 18: Session One: Introduction to Green Buildings and LEED

LEED Rating System

Levels of LEED Ratings• Points are awarded on a 100-point

scale, and credits are weighted to reflect their potential environmental impacts

Page 19: Session One: Introduction to Green Buildings and LEED

LEED Rating System

Buildings are certified based on the following number of points• Certified 40-49 points

• Silver 50-59 points

• Gold 60-79 points

• Platinum 80-110 points

10 bonus credits are available, four of which address regionally specific environmental issues

A project must satisfy all prerequisites and earn a minimum number of points to be certified

LEED Rating System

The Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) oversees and manages LEED certification for projects registered under any LEED Rating System
