By the end of this session, you will have…
• Learnt and used professional forms of communication
You are required to:Explore a range of methods and techniques to deliver presentations to one or more target audiences
You are our heroes!
Lecture shouts
• Main method of recruiting students• Time is short – what you say, and
how you say it, is crucially important• Get your shouts filmed to appraise
your own presentational strengths and drawbacks
Brainstorm
What are your top presenting tips? In groups, come up with
5
We say: think about 4 Ps
1. Purpose
2. Pitch
3. Presence
4. Personality
Purpose
• Know what you’re trying to achieve with your presentation
• Clarity of purpose is your top priority• Don’t just inform, but inspire! Leave
your audience with an action to take
Pitch
• Varying the volume and tone of your voice serves to provide emphasis to key points
• Consider the listener – a monotonous delivery causes people to switch off!
• Project your voice, but don’t shout• Pauses are effective at getting
people’s attention – use them!
Presence
• A straight posture projects confidence - Avoid hunching your back
• Open hand gestures are best – keep your hands OUT of your pockets!
• Know the content of your speech – cuts down on filler words, which undermine message
Personality
• People will buy into you first, and Team Up second – show yourself off!
• Think about how you can engage the students
• Intersperse the presentation with humour – has a disarming effect
Example: here’s one of mine!

Right – be critical!
Over to you!
Using the bullet points as a guide, practice your own 60 second lecture shouts in pairs, then
prepare to pitch!
