WORSHIPWELCOME AND PRAYER 8 Estimated time: 5 minutes 8 Tech: Life Point slide, Bible Verse slide 8 People: Bible Study Leader 8 Props: black poster board

BIBLE STUDY LEADER

Welcome. I’m glad you are here today. I have a special question for you, and I need your help. (Hold up black poster board.) Can you look very closely at the poster and tell me what you see.

Can you see anything? (Allow kids to respond.) As I look very closely at this poster, I … do … not … see … anything. I don’t see anything because it is completely blank. This poster does not have anything on it. It is just a black, empty poster.

Today our Bible story is about a place that was completely dark. In fact, the Bible says that in the beginning, the earth was dark. There was not anything on it. But God changed that. God made light and day and seas and plants. It wasn’t blank anymore. It wasn’t dark anymore. God made the world.

During the first four days some of the things God made were day, night, the land, and plants. (Show Life Point slide.) God made day, night, the land, and plants. Let’s say that together. God made day, night, the land, and plants.

Our verse today from the Bible even tells us that God made the world. Let’s say the verse together.

(Show Bible verse slide - select preferred version.)

• In the beginning, God made the world.Genesis 1:1 (Paraphrase)

• In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.Genesis 1:1 (HCSB)

• In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.Genesis 1:1 (KJV)

• In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.Genesis 1:1 (NIV)

• In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.Genesis 1:1 (ESV)

• In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.Genesis 1:1 (NKJV)

I have three questions for you, and I want you to shout out the answers.

ŜWhen did God make the world? (in the beginning)

ŜWho made the world? (God)

ŜWhat did God make? (world or heavens and earth)

Let’s pray now and thank God for making the world.

Dear God, thank You for making the world. Thank You for changing the black, empty, space and making a place for us. We love You and thank You for the world! In Jesus’ name, amen.

You know, I wonder if Imogene knows some of the things God made. Let’s listen and see.

GAME INSTRUCTIONS:

• Gather 6 pillowcases and place 1 object in each pillowcase: flashlight, sunglasses, 50 cotton balls, water bottle, bunch of silk flowers, garden trowel.

• Cinch up each pillow case and loosely tie a piece of yarn around it.

• Call 6 kids to the front.

• Walk through the crowd and hand the 6 pillowcases to 6 different kids.

• Ask the kids to stand in the front beside one of the other kids.

• Ask the first child to feel around the outside of the pillowcase and try to guess the hidden object.

• Untie the yarn and pull the object out of the pillowcase. If the child guessed correctly, say: “Ding, ding, ding!”

CONNECTION POINT LEADER

(Show Connection Point Game slide.)

Hi there, kids! Welcome to Connection Point. I need you to get your brains ready for today’s game. Everyone, show me your two pointer fingers. Now rub them on the side of your head to warm up your brain. (Rub each forefinger on the temples of your head.) OK, now I think we’re ready.

For today’s game I need six volunteers. (Choose six kids to come to the front. Introduce each child.)

Now, I need six other people to help me with today’s game. I’m looking for kids whose brains are really warmed up. If I hand you a pillowcase, go to the front of the room and stand by one of the other kids. (Walk around and choose six kids. Hand each one a pillowcase. Introduce each child once they are all lined up.)

OK, now that we are set, let me explain the game. Each of our first set of volunteers is going to feel the pillowcase and see if he can guess what the object is inside. When he makes a final guess, we will untie the yarn and pull the object out to see if he is correct. If you answer correctly, you will hear me say: “Ding, ding, ding.” Let’s get started.

(Invite each child to feel the pillowcase and guess the object. Ask the child to hold the object while the next child has a turn. Gather all of the objects at the end of the game and instruct the kids to return to their seats.)

Great job, kids! You did very well using your brain today. Now, let’s talk about each of these objects. First of all, we

have a flashlight. (Hold up flashlight.) When would we need to use a flashlight? (Lead kids to shout out answers such as when it is dark.) We need a flashlight when it is dark or when it is nighttime.

Now, what about these sunglasses? (Put on sunglasses.) When would we need to use them? (Lead kids to shout out answers such as when it is bright outside.) We need sunglasses when it is very bright outside.

Next we have cotton balls. (Hold up a handful of cotton balls.) These remind me of clouds. Where are clouds? (in the sky) Very good! You’ve got the hang of this!

Now, what about this water bottle? (Hold up water bottle.) Where can we find water? (Lead kids to answer in faucets, drinking fountains, lakes, rivers, seas, and so forth.)

And finally, we have the flowers and the garden trowel. (Hold up the silk flowers and the garden trowel.) This garden trowel can be used to dig up land to help flowers and plants grow. All of these things remind me of something that God made. After we sing, let’s listen to our Bible story and hear some of the things God created. Let’s sing and praise God for His creation!

(Connection Point Leader leaves.)

BIBLE STORY 8 Estimated time: 5-7 minutes 8 Tech: Christ Focus, Life Point, and Bible Story slides;

Bible Story Corner video (optional) 8 People: Bible Story Leader, seven kids 8 Props: Bible, play dough creation of a flower

(Play the Bible Story Corner video or tell the following Bible story.)

BIBLE STUDY LEADER

(Show Bible Story slide.)

Hi there! I’m so glad you are here today. In fact, I’m so happy to see you that I made you something special. (Hold up play dough creation.)

Can you tell what this is? (Allow kids to guess.) Yes! This is a flower. I tried to make the best flower I could out of this play dough. And there are a few more things I could create, such as a raindrop (shape into a raindrop), or a mountain (shape into a mountain). But if you asked me to make almost anything else, I probably can’t do it.

(Show Bible Story slide.) Today our Bible story is about God and all of the things He made. But, God did not use play dough. God used His voice and His words to make the world. God said the words, and the things were made. (Set down play dough creation.)

Let’s see what the Bible says about the creation.

(Open Bible and read Genesis 1:1,3-5.) In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and He called the darkness “night.” God made these things on the first day.

Then, on the second day, God made the sky. And on the third day, God made the sea, the dry land, plants, and trees. God made the trees and plants with seeds so that more trees and plants could grow. God looked at all of it and saw that it was good.

On the fourth day, God made the sun, moon, and stars. God put them up in the sky to give light to the earth. The sun

gives light during the day, and the moon and stars give light at night. And God saw that all of it was good.

(Show Life Point slide). During the first four days some of the things God made were day, night, the land, and plants. Let’s say that together. God made day, night, the land, and plants. God made the world. What else did we hear that God made? (Encourage kids to name seas, sun, moon, and stars.)

(Show Christ Focus slide.) After God finished His work, He told man to take care of the earth and all He had created. God cares about His creation! Many years later, Jesus reminded the people that God cares about the birds and the flowers. Jesus also reminded the people that God cares about us! God cares about us so much that He sent His only Son, Jesus, to the earth for us.

If we stopped right now and looked out a window what would we see that we talked about today? (Encourage kids to name the sky, earth, sun, plants, trees.) When you see something that God made, you can thank God for it. Let’s pray now and thank God for the sky, the earth, the trees, the sun, and the entire world!

Dear God, thank You for making the world. Thank You for the daytime and the nighttime. Thank You for the sky. Thank You for the seas, land, plants, and trees. Thank You for the sun, moon, and stars. Help us to take care of the world You made. We love You and thank You! In Jesus’ name, amen.

I like to think of all the things God made. But more than that, I like to thank God for the things He made. Let’s sing a song as a way to say: “Thank, You, God.”

Optional Giving Segment: I also like to bring an offering to church as a way to say:

“Thank, You, God.” Giving an offering is a way to show God that we love Him. We give so that other people can hear about Him and about how He made the world. If you would like to give an offering today, …

(Give directions for how the kids can give their offerings.)

(After collecting the offering, guide kids to stand for remainder of worship song.) We can sing and praise God for His creation. Stand with me.

CONNECTION POINT LEADER

(Show Connection Point Bible Verse slide.)

Hey, everyone! Welcome back to Connection Point! You’ve done a great job learning about the things God made. We heard about many different things God made in the first four days of creation.

If you were to read a fairy tale or a pretend story, what might be the first words of the story? Once upon (lead kids to finish the statement with the words “a time”) Yes! Once upon a time. Today we are looking at the words in the Bible. They are not pretend. They are not from a fairy tale. They are real. The words and things in the Bible really happened. Let’s see what the very first words of the Bible say.

(Show the Bible verse slide in your preferred version. Say the verse with the kids.)

Earlier, I had six volunteers who helped discover what the hidden objects were in our pillowcases. Now, I need six new volunteers to help me understand what these objects represent.

(Choose six kids to stand in the front. Introduce them to the group.)

OK, reach into the pillowcase and pull out one of the objects. First, tell me what it is. And second, tell me what you think it might represent that God created.

Yes! This is a flashlight. It reminds me that God made the night. He made nighttime. Let’s say that word in our phrase. God made the nighttime. (Lead kids to repeat the phrase.)

Great, let’s see what else God made.

(Help kids with answers if necessary: flashlight–night, sunglasses–day or sun, cotton balls–clouds, water bottle–seas, bunch of silk flowers–plants, garden trowel–land. Fill in the blank for each item: “God made the ______,” and guide kids to say the verse.)

These objects can help us to remember that in the beginning, God made the world. And, I’m so thankful that He did!

Wow! It sounds like the Spann family really enjoys living in Madagascar. Did you see all of the things God created in that video? How about the vanilla vine? That leaf was so big! And then the dirt roads where the pousse-pousse drivers drove the kids to school. I also saw the sky, the sun, and lots of plants and animals. It is great that the Spann family moved to Madagascar to be missionaries. They are helping the people there learn more about Jesus. This week, I hope you will pray for the Spanns and their work in Madagascar. Let’s pray for them now.

Dear God, we thank You for the Spann family and the work they are doing in Madagascar to tell pople about You. We pray that the pousse-pousse drivers, all the kids, and the people in their neighborhood will hear about You and trust in Your Son, Jesus. In Jesus’ name, amen.

This earth is so big. It covers thousands of miles. There are huge oceans and big pieces of land. There are thousands of stars in the sky in the night and a big bright sun in the day. Let’s see if we can name some specific things God made.

(Lead kids to speak responses to the next questions in a microphone.)

• Name a fruit or vegetable that growson a plant or tree. (such as apple, orange, watermelon, grapes, broccoli, carrots)

• Name something in the sky that God made. (such as stars, moon, clouds, sun)

• Name something God created in the first four days ofcreation. (day, night, land, plants)

(Show Life Point slide.)

God made day, night, the land, and plants. Let’s say that together. God made day, night, the land, and plants. So, anytime you see the daytime, which is everyday; and anytime you see the night, which is every night; and anytime you see the land or plants, you can remember that it was God who made those things. And you can thank God for those things. Next week we will hear about more things God made. We’ll see you then!
