NEW YEAR’S DAY IN JAPAN

• New Year is called “shougatsu”

• Schools and businesses close for almost one weeks

• Relatives come together

• a general house cleaning is done.

• New Year's pine and bamboo decorations, sacred straw festoon, and round mirror-shaped rice cakes are set out.

• "Osechi ryori" is a specially prepared New Year's dish

• The food in the "Osechi-ryori" each has a special meaning such as health, longevity, fertility, and luck.
