Background

• School located in urban locality - Vidyanagar, Hyderabad• School for the children from the slums of Adimket.• Dysfunctional government school in vicinity with 0% pass rate

in 10th.• Parents cannot send their children to private schools because

of poor financial condition.• Prior to the engagement with ASHA, depended on family

funds

Objective

• Started with objective for providing quality former education for marginalized, underprivileged sections of society

• Classes from KG to 10th, 252 students in total

Infrastructure• Two-story building with about 10 rooms• One small room (more like a storage space) for library• Very limited books and lab equipment• Classrooms a bit cramped, but just adequate for the existing

number of students• School has no bandwidth to take in more students with the

existing infrastructure• Not much play area except small courtyard in front of the

building, located in dense residential area• No computer(s)

Teachers• 16 teachers in total, of which 6 are very experienced• 1 admin staff• Committed set of teachers• Mix of senior and junior level teachers• Principal also part of teaching staff and takes interest in

looking for ways to improve• Ms. Sailatha, a post graduate in Economics presently working

as Lecturer in Little Flower Junior College a reputed college inHyderabad has expressed her willingness to teach the students on honorary basis.

Learning Levels• Learning levels were average to above average• Students showed willingness to learn• Reasonably comfortable in speaking English• Classes had some very good science charts made by students,

although some showed a lack of understanding of what was depicted mostly because teacher encouraged kids to make the charts before they taught the concepts

• Math, science skills need some improvement• Most students got it wrong on first attempts – had necessary

math skills but grasp of concepts needs improvement.

Challenges• Retention of senior teachers vital to quality of education

imparted at school • Lack of resources for hands-on learning – Science

Laboratory, Library & Computer Lab• Lack of after-school support structure to complement

Asha SV Engagement History2006

– Initial proposal to Asha SV– When they started there were 100 students in the school and they wanted to

expand to 300 and include secondary education.

Academic performance• The S.S.C. Results for the academic year 2011-12 in S.E.S School is 87.50% and the overall percentage in the State of Andhra Pradesh is 87.84%.

• 15 schools in Andhra Pradesh scored zero percent results this year. Among them 12 are private 3 are Government Schools.

• S.E.S is not equipped with full fledged Science and Computer Labs. The students are from unprivileged section of the society. Parents cannot afford to send their children to private coaching centers. Inspite of the drawbacks S.E.S has been securing 87.5 to 90 percent results since last 3 years.

•Regular tests were conducted for all other classes and none of the students were detained on the basis of academic performance.

Tracking progress of graduates

• A number of students are now pursuing Intermediate education in other colleges.

• For the latest batch also, particulars of Students who joined college after passing out from SES 10th Class in March 2012• N. Ramakrishna - Govt Polytechnic college, Masab Tank• Shaheen Begum - Inter 1st year CEC at Andhra Mahila Sabha college• Pradeep - Inter 1st Year MPC at Govt Jr. College Kachiguda• Asma Gebum - Inter 1st Year MPC at Govt Jr. College Kachiguda• Boda Theja, Polytechnic - Govt Polytechnic college, Masab Tank• Haleema Firduos - Discontinued her studies. SES is trying to motivate her to

join college.

Local involvement in schoolSeveral individuals and organizations have expressed interest. • NGO, CHEYUTHA WOMEN COUNCIL provided shoes to all the

students. They will approach organizations like this to help in different ways.

• Recently an NRI by the name of Mr. Vijay, a businessman in New York, US expressed his willingness to help the school. Last week he visited the school and met all the students. He said he will help us in collecting the funds from business people known to him.

• About 25 to 30 Employees of Oracle have been conducting the Sports Meet in the month of October since three years. They are sponsoring everything and it is really a great help to the students.

• Other prominent individuals like Mr. Buraa Venkatesam (IAS officer and ex faculty of SES) & Mr. Amar (president of Journalist association) are very closely involved in the school activities.

RTE funds• The act requires all private schools to reserve 25% of seats to children

from poor families (to be reimbursed by the state as part of the public-private partnership plan)

• So far, the Govt of A.P has not issued and any strict mandate orguidelines on the implementation.

Tax exempt status• If an NGO gets itself registered under section 80G then the person or the

organization making a donation to the NGO will get a deduction of 50% from his/its taxable income.

• Initially the school expected ASHA to fund completely but then later realized that they need to collect funds from within India as well.

• The basic requirement for this is to file the I.T. Returns of the School at least for three years before applying for Tax Exemption U/S 80G .

• Though 3 years period is not over, they have already started this task and hopefully they will get the exemption status before the end of December 2012.

Summary• Although school seems to create a parallel structure …

There definitely exists a wide gap between good private schools for those who can afford, and dysfunctional government schools for those who can’t.

• SES school doing a good job in bridging this gap as a school for the marginalized with focus on quality

• Commitment of senior teachers, principal and Mr Kanakaraju is vital to the functioning of school

• AshaSV should continue to support SES while encouraging them to also look for other sources of funding
