Diminishing numbers and increasingage are not the only differences betweenServite sisters yesterday and today.

In the mid-1960s, we were still allwearing identical habits and still all en-gaged in identical ministries: teaching andnursing. At one time we staffed fourhospitals and nursing homes and over20 elementary schools. The biographiesof our jubilarians and deceased sisterswitness to our historical emphasis oneducation and health care.

Those biographies also, however, tellthe tale of some of the changes that havetaken place over the last 40 years. Todayour ministries are as varied as the sisterswho perform them. You will find usserving in roles as diverse as parish di-rector, attorney, lab technician, and hos-pice chaplain. Our retired sisters keepactive in volunteer works ranging fromvisiting the sick to serving on boards ofnonprofits.

We had an opportunity to reflect uponthese and other changes last October, when we welcomed home so many ofthe women who were once membersof our congregation. Cheryl Nordby has

provided a wonderful account of thatevent in this issue of “Servite Sisters To-day.”

We also had an opportunity to tell ourformer members how much we missedthem when they left. So often in the olddays we didn’t even have a chance to saygoodbye. And, to those who were treatedpoorly, harshly, or even cruelly by the con-gregation or by sisters representing the con-gregation, we offered a profound apol-ogy.

Another important message we soughtto convey to those who left is that theywill always be part of our Servite family. They may be “former members” but noneof them are “former Servites.”Serviteness transcends official and legal re-lationships. It’s a way of being in theworld. It’s the deep bond that connects usto one another at our very core.

We were delighted to welcome the hus-bands of former members to the Octo-ber gathering. Marie Rossa’s husband Ronintroduced himself by saying: “I marrieda Servite.” If you married a Servite, youmarried into the family. You’re a Serviteby marriage.

Our former members made a lastingimpression on our congregation. Theyhelped us become who we are today. We were grateful to hear how they, inturn, felt enriched by their years with us.Said one, “We were so lucky to havetaken so much with us. Without it, wewould not be the people that we are, ministering to others that we work andlive with in all our various lives.”

Another summed up the sentimentsof many who attended the Octoberevent: “I have not seen hardly any ofthese people since I left over thirty yearsago. It was so wonderful to see every-one again. It makes me realize howstrong our Servite bonds are. I just hopethat in some fashion we can all be‘Servites’ for the rest of our lives. Thankyou for putting this together and invit-ing me home!”

God-IncidencesLast December a good friend of Sister

Sandra DeGidio donated a van to the Ser-vants of Mary for Sister Sandy’s use. Atabout the same time, Christopher Hoarof Caritas Fleet Services, which managesour fleet of vehicles, sent out an appeal toreligious congregations in the Wisconsinarea for a car for Sister Evalyne.

Sister Evalyne Nanyama is a Little Sisterof St. Francis of Assisi from Kenya. Sheis in Milwaukee pursuing graduate studiesin counseling at Marquette University, whilealso working with troubled boys at LadLake in Milwaukee’s inner city. She needsa car to get to and from work, and hercongregation is unable to provide one forher.

“When we heard of Sister Evalyne’sneed, a plan started to brew,” said SisterTheresa Sandok, President. “Suppose wetransferred Sandy’s 1999 Cavalier to SisterMary Pat Hill and donated Sister Mary Pat’s1991 Cavalier toCaritas for SisterEvalyne’s use? We gotthe thumbs up fromour Car Committee, and Sister Mary Pat alsoapproved of the ex-change.

The car we donated, though up in years, wasrelatively low in miles.Caritas Fleet Services

covered the cost of preparing the car for Sister Evalyne’s use, tothe tune of about $500. Among other things, the car needed anew exhaust system.

When Sister Evalyne took possession of the car on February1, her boss at Lad Lake informed her that now that she had avehicle, she could begin to have additional work opportunitiesto help her raise tuition money

Said Christopher Hoar, owner of Caritas Fleet Services, “Ifthis is not a clear case of the rewards for the Stewardship ofGod’s people working together to do God’s will, I don’t knowwhat is. Thanks to all who made this happen.”

“Ultimately what really matters is a cou-rageous spirit and a generous heart.” Thatwas the theme of the Servite Sisters’ 2005General Chapter held May5–9 at the RedemptoristRetreat Center in Ocon-omowoc, Wisconsin.

Forty-nine of thecongregation’s 64 sisterswere in attendance. Theycame from as far away asArizona, Massachusetts, and Florida, and as closeas Milwaukee for the busi-ness meeting.

The meeting focused ontwo main topics, gover-nance and the con-gregation’s motherhouseproperty in Ladysmith,Wisconsin.

At the meeting, the sis-ters approved the adoption of a revisedHandbook. The revision to the formerHandbook, which the sisters adopted in1991, includes changes in their leadershipmodel, committee structure, policies, andprocedures to make them more in keep-ing with the sisters’ present lived experi-ence.

The new Handbook is the result of twoyears of extensive study, dialogue, and dis-cernment by the entire congregation. “Nodoubt that’s the reason the document metwith such overwhelming approval by thesisters,” said Sister Theresa Sandok, presi-dent of the congregation.

The two most fundamental parts of theHandbook, the Principles of Religious Lifeand the Constitution, require the approval

of Bishop of SuperiorRaphael M. Fliss, becausethe sisters are a diocesancongregation.

In a letter dated June 19,2005, the feast of ServiteSaint Juliana Falconieri,Bishop Fliss wrote, “Iread your documents care-fully and am happy to saythat I approve the adop-tion of your new Servantsof Mary Handbook.”

In 2003 the sisters de-cided to explore optionsfor the use of theirmotherhouse property inLadysmith, a decisionprompted by the decreas-

ing number of sisters who reside there. At the Chapter, the sisters agreed that theywill one day have to divest themselves oftheir motherhouse property. In the mean-time, they will continue to live there whileexploring available options.

Considering that the median age of thecommunity is 75, an important challengefor the sisters is growing older with sim-plicity, optimism, tolerance, honesty, cour-age, dignity, humor, and faith. And always, striving to live into what God is callingthem to be and to become with coura-geous spirits and generous hearts.

Servite Sisters in dialogue and discernment regarding their revised Handbook.

The Sisters sign one another withblessed water and ask God’s

blessing on each other as they goforth from the Chapter to live their

mission “to be a compassionatepresence in people’s lives.”

Mary Alice’s Fridays“The seminary is the last place I would

have ever considered as my place of min-istry,” says Sister Mary Alice Willems. Af-ter years in the classroom, then even moreyears as a religious educator and pastoralminister, and finally eight years as a chap-lain, her life journey has led right up thetree-lined path at St. Francis Seminary inMilwaukee.

Each Friday morning she facilitates aseminar titled Pastoral Formation. The goalis simple: to integrate students’ theology, philosophy, and scripture classes into reallife situations. The reality can be difficult. How do you take your theology into thejail, or the hospice setting, or the homelessshelter? The seminar offers a place to shareand search for new understandings as vast

amounts of information are transformedinto a student’s unique way of being aminister.

“Each and every experience of my lifehas shaped me for this moment. Espe-

cially helpful is the training I receivedthrough Clinical Pastoral Education, whichprepared me for chaplaincy. There I wasinvited to realize that who I am speaksmore clearly to others than what I say ordo. I try to pass along this insight.”

Mary Alice finds that meeting with stu-dents each week challenges her to continueto reflect upon her own life and growth. She says, “I find that I cannot teach what Ido not do in my own life.”

The rest of the week Mary Alice is morelikely to be working at the computer orhandling phone calls. As Vice President ofMinistry of the Servite congregation, theseare the tools that shape her other ministry. The administrative tasks are necessary, sheadmits, but Friday mornings continue togive vibrancy and meaning to these neces-sary tasks.

sponded with cancer patients, whosenames she received from the Servite friarswho work in the healing ministry of St.Peregrine, the cancer saint. She now livesat Addolorata Villa in Wheeling, Illinois.

The fall foliage in Ladysmith was spec-tacular and, after lunch, all enjoyed a walkthrough the grounds, capped by partici-pation in the dedication of two plaques atthe Sisters’ cemetery to commemorateServite Sisters buried elsewhere.

In the afternoon, the group gathered todiscuss the question: “Where Do We GoFrom Here?” The event ended late Satur-day afternoon with Vespers.

For many of the attendees, this was thefirst time they had been back to Ladysmithsince leaving the convent. It was a power-ful feeling to be welcomed back with suchwarmth and hospitality. During the twodays, everyone had the opportunity to tourthe Motherhouse and grounds.

There was much laughter and joy, andsome pain, in remembering those bygonedays as postulants, novices, and young nuns.Viewing a wonderful display of pictureshelped in the remembering.

To commemorate this event, a grouppicture was taken on the steps of theMotherhouse under a bright and sunnyWisconsin fall afternoon.

Since this event, local “Gatherings ofFriends” have been held in the Twin Cities

and Chicago. The Twin Cities group metin January and June, with plans to meetagain in October. The Chicago group metin March. The friendship, sharing, and heal-ing begun in Ladysmith continues on. Aprayer during the dedication of the me-morial plaques captures the essence of the“Welcome Home” event:

With reverence we remember thosewhose pathways came together with ours, whether for a short or long time.We are grateful for all that we shared,

for humor and work, for affection and trust, for the celebration of life.

Special thanks go to the “WelcomeHome” planning committee: Sister BonnieAlho, Dick and Ann Breitbach, PatD’Ercole, Sister Rosemary Fandel, MaryJo and Bob Loftus, Sister Mary DeLourdes Plourde, Norma Prohaska, Sis-ter Theresa Sandok, and John and CarolStewart.
