Serving with Faith and Love September 2019
Kia Ora, Salaam-Alaikum, Kia Orana, Talofa, Malo e lelei, Namaste, Bula, Malo ni, Makadini, Annyoung,
Witamy, Welcome.
Prayer is such a powerful way in which we can communicate with God. Here are some prayers that you can
use for everyday conversations with our Lord.
Presence: God is with me, but more, God is within me. Let me dwell for a moment on God's life-giving presence, in
my body, in my mind, in my heart, as I am here, right now.
Freedom: Lord, grant me the grace to be free from the excesses of this life. Let me not get caught up with the desire
for wealth. Keep my heart and mind free to love and serve you.
Consciousness: Dear Lord help me to be always aware of the important things in life. To care for those around me.
To seek your presence in all I meet.
Conversation: Words don't come easily to me, Lord. Look into my heart and see my longing for peace.
Watch over me, Lord. I know that you are always by my side.
Presence: May my heart rejoice in your love, O Lord. Let me live each day anew.
Freedom: What most often stops me achieving freedom is my tendency to be caught up in fears and expectations
about what I 'ought' or 'should' be. My usual automatic responses tie me down
and inhibit me from exploring new areas of growth. I ask and pray for a greater sense of inner freedom and that I
might reach the fresh and challenging possibilities that God wishes me to realise.
Consciousness: Help me Lord to be more conscious of your presence. Teach me to recognise your presence in others.
Fill my heart with gratitude for the times Your love has been shown to me through the care of others.
Conversation: Jesus, You are always there waiting for me. Sometimes I get bogged down with the concerns of this
life. Grant that I may be still more often. To know Your peace, Your calm.
Presence: Lord, help me to be fully alive to your holy presence. Enfold me in your love. Let my heart become one
with yours.
Freedom: It is so easy to get caught up with the trappings of wealth in this life. Grant, O Lord, that I may be free from
greed and selfishness. Remind me that the best things in life are free. Love, laughter, caring and sharing.
Consciousness: It is so easy to get caught up with the trappings of wealth in this life. Grant, O Lord, that I may be free
from greed and selfishness. Remind me that the best things in life are free. Love, laughter, caring and sharing.
Conversation: Lord, I know that when I turn to you there is no need for words. You can see into my heart.
You know my desires and you know my needs. I place myself into your hands.
Conclusion: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever
shall be, world without end.

FROM THIS:
To this:
What an amazing production. Special thanks to Ms Nāri Guthrie, who with her passion and never-ending energy has
moulded our students into great performers. We thank the tireless production team, the parents and whanau
coming in to paint, sew, build, helping the student with lines, setting up the hall, donating their time and energy. We
thank all our sponsors and all the generous donations we have received over the past few weeks. Everybody went
away singing the praises of all our students and their hard work in making this a fun production for all.
ROOM 4 There have been a few changes in Room 4 this term. First we welcomed three new students from Room 1.

making things with magnets.
But the most fun was had while
hanging magnets off the tables!

and what happens in that journey. By Ellery. Yr5
A very popular writer came to our school for Duffy assembly -Tim
Tipene. It was very interesting to listen to his stories because of how
he was able to talk. I wanted to become a writer just like him. By
Leonie Smith Muller Yr.6
For Our Duffy assembly we had a special guest, Tim Tipene. I felt so excited he shared with us what inspired him to
be an author. After the assembly I felt motivated to reach the success criteria in my story writing. By Marie Hoglund
Yr. 5
Duffy Assembly was fantastic. I felt really happy because our whole school was laughing through the whole Assembly
because of our special guest Tim Tipene and his story telling talents. Tim was really funny and his stories about his
life was inspiring. I can’t wait to read his new book called Mrs. Battleship inspired by his school teacher Mrs.
Battersby. By Tyra-Jayne Yr6
ROOM 5 In Room 5 we have created Bookflix. It’s just like Netflix but we have to choose books. I am ready for the challenge to read many different type of books and improve my reading comprehension. By Hazza Yr.6

because there were lots of books we had to
read. This reminded me of Netflix and how
you can choose what you want to watch. By
Fittler Smith Muller Yr.6
Bookflix is when you have to choose a book and if you do not have it you go check in the Grey Lynn Library. The
thoughts and feelings about Bookflix is that it helps me to read more because I don’t often read. It inspired me to
read more daily and to achieve in my reading goals. By Ellery yr.5
Bookflix is a reading challenge for Room 5. This has helped me with reading by teaching me about books that have
adventures and science. What I like about it is that we gain knowledge by reading and learning new things and this is
why I find it most interesting and fun. By Tyra-Jayne Yr6

ABSENTEES
If your child is away or late to school, it is your duty to inform the office of the reason for their lateness or why they are away. If we do not receive this communication from whanau in the morning, it becomes a Health and Safety matter. We expect each child to be at school on time, when they are not we become worried. How are we to know if the child has had an accident on the way to school or are in trouble and that they cannot help themselves? It is very important that you contact the office when your child is absent. If we have not received a response by 9.30 am, then a referral will be made to the correct departments. Attendance is vital for the continued education of your child and we endeavour to make sure they receive the best. To be able to do this effectively your child needs to be at school on time and ready to learn. Please support us in preparing your child for their next stages in life. There are a number of options available with reporting your child’s absence to the office.

YEARS 7 & 8 AND THE EPRO8 CHALLENGE!
This was a competition of team work and problem solving. The problem was: They had to build a tower at least 1.9m tall with 4 levels of specific heights and an elevator to start at ground level and rise to level four. There were so many thoughts that were inside my mind that moment we entered Pasadena Intermediate. It was
breath-taking to see all the different stations and our station that was filled with a lot of equipment just for our team
of four. It was a terrific experience to have and it was a learning curve that helped my team succeed with the
different steps we had to take. If I had the opportunity to do it, again I would. By Lakyn-Rae Vae yr.8
EPro8 is a challenge all about technology. I really loved all the equipment that was there. My favourite part about
EPro8 was trying out where the wires go into. Our supporters were also laughing at us, which made us laugh too. I
really would want to do it again sometime next year. By Maree Vaka yr.7
Last night, all Year 7 and 8 students of Room 5 participated in the EPro8 challenge at Pasadena. It was an exceptional
experience to work together as a team and problem solve the elevator challenge. By Nadina Lafaele yr.8
Epro8 is a challenge where we have to build something in a limited time. When I walked into the room, I wasn’t
expecting nails, batteries, and a bunch of electronics. I had no clue what I was going to do with that, but the man
explained the materials. We got to choose what challenge we wanted to do, and out of all challenges, we chose to
do the elevator. We were confused at first, but them we started to pick up the pace. We were on the right track, but
was very lost when we tried to move the elevator automatically. This experience taught me how to power on a car,
and how to work with electronics. By Julizah Maoe – Yr 8
TROPHY REMINDER With the end of year quickly approaching it is that time again where all trophies MUST BE returned to the
school office by Friday 27th September 2019.
LOST PROPERTY We have a very colourful array of lost property in our collection and would like to see all pieces returned to their rightful owners. The first place for your child to look for lost items would be in their school bags, at home, in the classroom and then as a last resort in the lost property bin that is in the sickbay.
HEAD LICE
We now have products available in the office from KidsCan to treat head lice. Please feel free to email the school at

News from your Board
I am pleased to have this opportunity to introduce myself as a new member of your Board of Trustees. I have
been appointed to your Board as a proprietor’s representative and I look forward to serving St Joseph’s School
Grey Lynn in the best way I can. I have worked for over forty years as an educator in New Zealand schools and
have worked in Auckland Catholic Primary Schools for thirty one years. I was principal of St Joseph’s School
Pukekohe for sixteen years before resigning in 2016. While serving on your Board of Trustees gives me the
opportunity to share some of my experience as a Catholic educator, it also gives me the chance to “give back”
to an education system that I have been privileged to work in for so long.
