In all, it looks like a strong year ahead, with plenty of challenges for us to embrace. We’re focusing on a risk assessment and management programme, but, as in life, it’s impossible to predict every outcome. All we can do is think, plan and prepare as best we can. Its All About YouI have a lovely job where I meet so many wonderful olderpeople.OntalkingwiththemIhearofamazinglives.Nobodyseemstothinktheirownlifestoryisinteresting to anyone else – but it is.

I was lucky enough to be raised in a family where family stories were relived regularly, my parents also spoke of their younger lives and sometimes their hopes and dreams for us all. However, then my dad died and his stories could have been forgotten oronlypartiallyrememberedbyusall.Luckilydadwasagreatwriterandleftstories(basedlooselyonfact)forustokeepandpassontoourchildrenand grandchildren. These stories outlined a life that is almost unbelievable in today’s world of modern conveniences. His stories are treasured by us and keep his memory alive but dad also wrote of his love and pride in each one of us- to be told you are loved is one thing but to have it written down is a true keepsake. We often hear from family members who

have received these special letters and how they cherish them.

My mum is now writing many of her life stories for us – something we look forward to reading. It takes her a long time as she is writing longhand and she has somuchtotell.Sheisreallyenjoyingwritingtheseas each story brings back so many memories for her and us as she remembers them.

If you are thinking about writing your stories they can bedonemanyways–longhand, filmed‘live’andputonDVD’sforfamily, orsomeonecancomeinandlisten to your stories and write them on computer.

Feeling stressed or anxious? Try de-cluttering your life.Clutter can distract you, weigh you down and in general can invite chaos into your life. It often creeps up on you un-noticed and getting it under control can seem like an impossible task. This in turn can cause you to feel stressed, not knowing where to start or what to do about it. The answer lies in taking one small step at a time in one small area whether it is your work, your home or your life.

Work.Ifyouhaveanofficeorastudystartwithyourdesk.Clear everything off it and empty the drawers. Clean itup–itwillimmediatelylookbetter.Puteverythinginto 3 piles….to keep, to bin, not sure. Throw out the binpilestraightaway.Putallyourofficesuppliesinonedrawerthentacklethekeeppile.Sortitintofiles

Home.A really messy house is not a comfortable place to be if you have to move a pile of junk from a chair every time you want to sit down. This is stressful.Pickoneroomandstartwiththefloorbyclearingeverything that doesn’t belong there. Throw out or donateunuseditems.Movetotheflatsurfacesandclear them as much as possible, then give them a clean. Consider what you really need to keep then organise it into drawers, cupboards, cabinets to keep them out of sight but still neatly organised.

Cull the rest, learn to say no. If you can eliminate the things that don’t bring you joy or value you will have more time for the things that you love.

Make a second list of your routines. Do you have setroutinesoriseverydayratherhaphazard.Alittlestructure can be helpful and helps to calm that small voice which keeps telling us to do this or that. If you know you have a time set aside for those tasks, a new sense of calm and order may come into your life.

We would like to acknowledge also the fantastic role that our rural co-ordinators play in matching clients and volunteers together. Thank you so much for making our role in Hamilton so much easier by working within your community. Another amazing edition of “PRIMARY PALS” Sincethebeginningoftheyear, the wonderful Young VinniesfromMarianSchoolhave personalised just about 100 birthday cards for our most appreciative andgratefulclients.Someof them have no families in the area and don’t always have a birthday card sent or delivered to them on their special day. Delivering these birthday cards is something I always look forward to. Seeingtearsofjoywhileanolder person is staring at a particular picture or art work on the card is rewarding. Seeinganolderpersonsmileor laughing while reading funny quotes on the cards is fulfilling.

Therefore!ThankyouKerrieMartin and your art students (YoungVinnies)foryourvaluable contribution to the lives of our older people. I see more happy faces this year compared to the previous years.

Farewell to Celebrating Age Centre ManagerItiswithsadnesswesayfarewelltoSoujanwhohas managed the CAC for Hamilton City Council for the last 10 years.

Many of you will have passed by the front desk orcaféandseenSoujanssmilingface.Hehaskept the centre ticking over by making sure we have our rooms booked, the cleaners have done

their job, the temperature is good, the sound system & projectors are up and running when needed, listened to all our complaints & gripes, moved heavy furniture & stacks of chairs, turned off the lights & locked the doors each night, helped out at centre events, kept the centre maintained and many other unseen tasks. He cared for and got to know many of the older people that pass through the centre.

We will miss and wish him good luck for the future.

Age Concern was contacted by Waikato DHB asking if we could recommend a plumber to support an older man in hospital who was being discharged to his house which was in a poor state of neglect. We gavethemRenewablePlumbing’sdetails.ConradwascontactedbytheSocialWorkerandhewasgreatat getting back to them very promptly. He then did a wonderful job of supporting the man with a makeover of his property. He not only project managed all the sub-contractors for the job but also did voluntary work himself with a clean up of the yard and hanging art work in the newly decorated lounge. This care and support was the turning point for this man as it helped him to feel

good about his home which was a huge part of his general recovery. He no longer lives with squalor and self neglect.Conrad also assisted another client with a sewage leak during his very busiest time during one of our Hamiltonwinterstorms.Thispersonwasadifficultclient but Conrad treated him with dignity, was able to gain his trust and worked with him to make the property safe and sanitary. Conrad organised the other services needed to complete the job and then checked that the result was satisfactory.

Both Christmas and the Last Night of the Proms are synonymous with some of the world’s best loved songs and more than their share of fun and frivolity. We combine music from these two great festivals into a gala concert, full of famous Christmas carols and songs, flag waving classics like Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britannia, the Best of British Ballads, Gilbert and Sullivan, skits and jokes with even an appearance from Santa Claus and his little elves. Music, madness, magic and mayhem makes for a marvellous way to celebrate the Christmas season.
