SHARE is a non- profit or-ganization and its mission is tocreate and sustain a supportivenetwork of women affected bybreast and ovarian cancer.

Please join St. Raphael insupporting SHARE!

Close to 14,000 New Yorkwomen and around 150 NewYork men are diagnosed withbreast cancer each year. It may bea family member, co-worker,neighbor, friend or even yourselfwho has battled this disease. Eventhough it is one of the most com-mon cancers in New York, earlydetection can lead to successfultreatment in many cases – whichmakes breast cancer awareness akey component to maintaining ahealthy life.

The importance of early de-tection can’t be stressed enough.Since breast cancer can be diag-nosed at an early, more treatablestage, survival rates are up andtreatment can be successful. Prac-ticing regular self-breast examsto identify any changes or irregu-larities and scheduling regularvisits and annual mammogramsfor women over 40 with healthcare providers increase thechances of early detection – fur-ther increasing the chances ofbecoming a breast cancer survi-vor.

There are certain steps thatcan be taken to reduce the risks ofdeveloping breast cancer. Hereare a few steps New Yorkers couldtry, as suggested by the Ameri-can Cancer Society:

Breast-feeding, if possible, for at least six months;Avoiding, if possible, the

use of post-menopausalhormone therapy;Exercising regularly;Maintaining a healthy

weight; andLimiting alcohol use.

Not all possible causes ofbreast cancer are known and moreresearch is certainly needed toidentify them. And while NationalBreast Cancer Awareness Monthhas helped make numerous strides

over the past 25 years, there ismuch more that needs to be done. It’s encouraging that early detec-tion and improved treatment havedecreased the chance of dyingfrom breast cancer to 1 in 35, butit still remains that 1 in 8 womenwill develop breast cancer in herlifetime. That’s why this year theAssembly continued its commit-ment to keeping New Yorkershealthy by passing the followinglegislation pertaining to breastcancer prevention:

A.1581 – authorizes fundingfor mapping breast cancer inci-dences and requiring detailedsales reports of pesticides knownto be linked to breast cancer; and

A.5343 – creates an environ-mental health tracking system toevaluate, among other chronicdiseases, breast cancer, so thatprevention measures can be taken.

Throughout New York, nu-merous walks, fundraisers, silentauctions and the like will be heldin October to support breast can-cer awareness. Functions such asthis one allow the community tocome together to raise both aware-ness and money to keep up thefight against breast cancer.

I urge each of you to get in-formed, share information withloved ones, attend or support abreast cancer awareness function, and reduce your risks of develop-ing breast cancer. To see whichcancer service programs are of-fered in each county, visit theNew York State Department ofHealth’s Web site atwww.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/cancer/center/partnerships/ or callits cancer service hotline at (866)442-2262. You may also visit theNational Breast Cancer Aware-ness Month’s Web site atwww.nbcam.org or call my of-fice at 718-456-9492.

On Friday, October2nd, Sunnyside Shines, the orga-nization that manages the localbusiness improvement district, hosted a reception in its new of-fice. The office is located on 43rdstreet, one block south of QueensBoulevard. The purpose of theparty was two-fold. The first rea-son was to introduce the newoffice. The second was to showoff the hundreds of entries for theSunnyside Shines Logo Contest. The walls were covered with adiverse array of logos some ofwhich were computer generatedand others which were handdrawn. The first place winner,Ben Perez, was present. His de-sign is featured prominently onthe front window of the new spaceand on all of the yellow SunnysideShines totes you’ve seen aroundtown.

To say that the small officewas filled to capacity withpartygoers is an understatement. The reception spilled out to thesidewalk outside the office andattendees arrived throughout thenight. Everyone was greeted bySunnyside Shines Executive Di-rector, Alyssa Bonilla and BoardChair John Vogt, of White CastleSystems, Inc. Among those inattendance were area residents, business owners, local artists, andpoliticians such as Marc Leavitt,Jimmy Van Bramer, and AngeloMaragos. Everyone enjoyed wineand cheese and the live music ofguitarist Tosh Sheridan. And, ofcourse, seeing art that showcasesour neighborhood was a specialtreat!

REAL ESTATE

REAL ESTATE FACTSby RITA LOWRY

DON’T TAKE EVERYTHINGIf you plan to move while your home is still listed for sale, you

may face a marketing challenge-the vacant home. While lived-inhome sales may be more attractive during showings, there is muchyou can do to present your vacant property successfully.

On the outside, give your home an occupied look by asking aneighbor to park their car in your driveway, open and close yourdrapes, and retrieve any mail that still arrives. During the warmseason, have a lawn service maintain the yard (in the winter, a snowremoval service may be in order).

On the inside, create a sense of space by leaving some strategi-cally placed pieces of furniture, like a few chairs, tables and lamps. You can create a “bed” by covering an empty box mattress or severalmoving boxes with a thick comforter.

If you remove furniture that reveals blemishes on the walls, repairand repaint those. If you notice that the carpeting is faded after you’vemoved furniture, consider replacing if possible.

Keep it feeling pleasant indoors during all season by keeping yourpower on after you move, and having a neighbor or family memberset the temperature at a minimum comfortable setting according toseasonal conditions.

Your agent will have even more suggestions for marketing avacant home, so put that experience to good use!

Financial Strategies for Your

Pet of the Week

Submit a picture of your pet andyou just might see it in the

Woodside Herald!

When you first started out inyour career, you may have fo-cused on paying off student loans, buying a home and, hopefully, starting to save for retirement.Generally speaking, these arepretty straightforward goals. Butby the time you enter your 50sand 60s, your financial objec-tives may be somewhat morecomplex, so you will need to takegreat care in creating and imple-menting the right strategies.

What You’ll Need - and WhatYou’ll Have(During your 20s,30s and 40s, you may have putaway as much as you could af-ford in your 401(k) and IRA, butyour more immediate concernswere paying someone else: yourstudent loan provider, your mort-gage company, your children’scollege, etc. But once you reachyour 50s, you may have finishedwith these types of obligations. And that gives you an opportu-nity to look ahead.

For starters, you’ll want toenvision the type of retirementlifestyle you want. Of course, you may have done this exercisewhen you were younger, but, overtime, your plans could easily havechanged. Now it’s time to reallytake a close look at what you

expect from retirement. Wherewill you live? Will you travelmuch? Volunteer? Open a smallbusiness? The possibilities arevast - and so are the differencesin cost. So, to navigate yourcourse during the years left untilyou retire, you will want to knowwhat your retirement will looklike - and how much it will cost.

Once you know about howmuch money you will need tofund your retirement, your nextstep is to look at your potentialretirement assets: Social Secu-rity payments, distributions fromyour 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan, and income fromyour personal investments, suchas bond interest and stock divi-dends. Factoring in all these re-sources, will you have enough toenjoy a retirement that could lasttwo or three decades? If not, whatcan you do about it during theyears before you retire? Shouldyou adjust your portfolio to pro-vide more growth? Can you putin still more to your 401(k) andIRA? If you have “maxed out”on these vehicles, should youlook for another tax-advantagedretirement vehicle, such as anannuity?

Clearly, these are not simple

questions to answer, which iswhy you may be able to benefitfrom working with a financialprofessional - someone whoknows your situation and can helpyou create individualized strate-gies to meet your goals.

Put Estate Plans inPlace(Beyond estimating the costof your retirement lifestyle, andassessing your financial pre-paredness, what else can you doin your 50s and 60s to make sureyou are on track to meet all yourgoals? You need to do your es-tate planning.

Specifically, you will want tohave the appropriate legal docu-ments in place. Do you have thecorrect beneficiaries named onyour insurance policies? Do youhave a will and a living trust tomake sure that your assets willbe distributed according to yourwishes? Do you have a durablepower of attorney so that some-one can make financial decisionson your behalf if you becomeincapacitated?

By working with an experi-enced estate-planning attorneyand tax professional you can pro-tect your financial interests - andthose of your family. So don’tdelay - the sooner you start, theless you will have to worry aboutin retirement.
