Dear Friends,

A new year of possibilities and opportunities has begun! For me, this is a very “bittersweet” time: listening to and joining in conversations about the future, feeling the excitement, and then realizing I will not be the one working on the project. I quickly, however, move beyond my sadness because I am also very gratified to see Dustin and the Bittersweet leadership team leading in a professional and confident manner, while always keeping the participants and the core values as the focus. It makes me feel reassured and proud that I have indeed done my job well.

2017 will be a year of transition and that will take time and energy. Once that transition has been successful, there is much work to be done in charting the next few years for Bittersweet. I am encouraged that Dustin,

all of the staff, and the Bittersweet, Inc. Board and the Bittersweet Foundation Board will be working together to map out the future.

When the leadership team recently got together, one of the traits they identified of mine was optimism. I have always been and will continue to be optimistic about this organization and what happens next. I will stay involved, at least as a donor, and will look forward to seeing the future unfold.

Accomplishments of 2016 include:

Thank you to everyone in the Bittersweet community who has worked tirelessly beside me to positively impact the lives of those we serve. It truly does take teamwork to make the dream a reality!

I am confident that Bettye Ruth Kay’s spirit will live on … To quote Bettye Ruth Kay, “Onward!”

Sincerely,

Vicki ObeeExecutive Director

• A renewed commitment to better communications with all employees. As part of that effort we held appreciation events at all our locations this past fall. Our staff makes the mission possible!

• Initiation of an exciting program for adolescents called “Social Living Club”. This new program pairs teen mentors with adolescents on the autism spectrum for a variety of classes from cooking to yoga.

• In collaboration with the Great Lakes Collaborative for Autism, the first class of an innovative program called “Venture bound” opened at Perrysburg High School.

• A satellite location for Bittersweet Farms’ day program was opened in downtown Sylvania.

• Our first “Celebrating Possibilities” fund raiser was held in May at Bittersweet Farms in Whitehouse.

• Completion of a permanent and professional historical wall and timeline display in the administration building that showcases the history and development of Bittersweet Farms in both pictures and words.

Dear Friends,

It is with great pleasure, optimism, and honor that I assume the role of executive director for Bittersweet in April. Having had the privilege to build my career with the organization, beginning nearly 17 years ago as a direct support professional, I have witnessed our mission in action on a daily basis. In every case, the foundation of our success has been in relationships rooted in our core values (RHEAL: “Respect”, “Help First”, “Empathy”, “Achieve Together”, and to “Learn & Grow”).

Since my start in 2000, the rate of autism has escalated rapidly from 1 in 500 to 1 in 68 today. In response, Bittersweet has grown and adapted to meet the rising need and has done so while maintaining quality, person-centered supports in the vision and philosophy of our founder. This has been possible because of the contributions of many: the amazing work and dedication of our entire team, across all of our programs and in every shift and position; the vision and leadership of Vicki and the Bittersweet Inc. and Foundation boards; the collaboration and advocacy of parents, family members, and stakeholders; and the overwhelming support and generosity we receive from our volunteers, grantors, and donors.

While the numbers to be served have grown, so have some of the challenges in doing so. In recent years workforce shortages have been experienced in many industries, but ours has been arguably one of the hardest hit. This is not only a costly factor, but an impactful one given the nature of our services and the importance of relationships. Additionally, our industry has been undergoing dramatic transformation. Virtually every aspect of the organization has been impacted by new regulation, mandates, or funding mechanisms over the last few years, and this pace is likely to continue given current political shifts.

In light of all of this, I look at 2017 as a year of stabilizing and preparation. We must continue to build upon our initiatives to control costs, offset funding limitations, and plan strategically. We must also focus on assertively improving workforce retention through a number of dynamic strategies, including improved training and culture building. Further, we need to continue assessing our operational structure to ensure we are working efficiently, effectively, and nimbly in the face of change. In this effort, it is important to maintain an open forum of communication across the Bittersweet community, especially in this time of transition, and I will be working with our leadership team to ensure we have the proper channels and opportunities in place to accomplish this. Most importantly, we must continue in our efforts to ensure that the people we serve are served well, and that we are positively impacting their lives, as is our mission to do.

I am excited about Bittersweet’s bright future and thankful for the opportunity to further serve the organization. Thank you for what you do for our participants. I am proud to be part of such a wonderful community of people and know that as long as we continue to achieve together, we will continue to thrive.

With much gratitude and enthusiasm for 2017,

Dustin WatkinsIncoming Executive Director

THE pREVALENCE OF AUTIsM

Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in U.S. The incidence of autism is roughly 120% higher than the estimates for 2002 (1 in 150).

The incidence rate is currently 1 in 68 children. The incidence rate was 1 in 10,000 children in the 1970’s.

AUTIsM FACTs

In June 2014, only 19.3 percent of people with disabilities in the U.S. were participating in the labor force – working or seeking work. Of those, 12.9 percent were unemployed, meaning only 16.8 percent of the population with disabilities was employed.

By contrast, 69.3 percent of people without disabilities were in the labor force, and 65 percent of the population without disabilities was employed. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014)

ASD is about 4.5 times more common among boys (1 in 42) than among girls (1 in 189)
