serving people in their time of need

Dear Friends,
Thank you for a year of change and growth at KACS! As volunteers and staff explored ways to stem the growing tide of need, the community responded by embracing our vision to end hunger and homelessness in our area.
In January, Chester County awarded KACS a Community Development Block grant to purchase and renovate the building directly adjacent to the Food Cupboard. Settlement followed in August and exterior renovations began in November. This new facility is anticipated to deepen collaborations with partner agencies and provide opportunities for chronically homeless to fill basic needs while seeking permanent housing.
February’s Empty Bowls Event became two events, as a lunch seating was added. An incredible group of volunteers organized the event that shed light on the plight of hunger. Many organizations donated hundreds of hand-made clay bowls for attendees as part of the celebration.
After five years of 20% annual growth, demand for food assistance decreased 18% in 2015 due in large part to Case management services Integrated into the Food Cupboard program. Families found quick access to resources that bring some relief to their household budgets. Over 90% of Food Cupboard participants take part in the new Healthy Options program, deepening relationships with staff and volunteers that walk with them on their journey to sustainability.
A new collaboration was forged with the Kennett Consolidated School District to provide a low barrier food source for children over the summer months when the free and reduced food programs provided at school are unavailable. Over 200 children received vital supplements to their daily diet due to the hard work of Kennett Humanitarian Club students, KACS volunteers and support from the Chester County Food Bank. At the end of August, 320 students received backpacks and school supplies for a positive start to the school year.
People from every facet of our community played an important part in the success of KACS, the Kennett Food Cupboard and our events throughout the year. From the churches and youth groups that volunteered at Empty Bowls to the service clubs and businesses that toiled in the Raised Bed Gardens, to the 500 volunteers that made the 62nd Annual Christmas Basket distribution an unparalleled accomplishment. Local struggling families felt the support and compassion of a community that is dedicated to serving their needs and contributing to their success.
It is clear the dedicated volunteers, donors and supporters will continue to have a strong, positive impact on families in their time of need. It is in this collaborative effort that we will not only fight hunger and homelessness, but we will find new ways to prevent it. For this and for all of your support, we humbly thank you.

Our Story
In 1954, Kennett Area Community Service (KACS) began by distributing Christmas Baskets of food to a few families in need in our area. This grassroots effort was begun by Norm Connell and Bill Buffington with community support. KACS was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1993, fol-lowed by the Kennett Food Cupboard opening in 1996. In addition to food, KACS has aided resi-dents in crisis with emergency financial assistance for rental and utility payments, heating oil, medi-cal and transportation assistance, as well as other emergency needs. Over the last eight years, the Emergency Assistance program went from serving a handful to over 300 families per year. KACS has become a significant access point for families in need in the Southern Chester County region and meets the mission of: Serving People in Their Time of Need
KACS continues to grow in order to meet the needs of struggling families. Through two programs, the Kennett Food Cupboard and the Emergency Assistance Program, KACS stabilizes scores of families and individuals residing within the core service area, encompassing the school districts of Kennett Consolidated, Unionville-Chadds Ford and Avon Grove. To these families, the assistance received from KACS represents food on the table, a roof overhead or heat during the winter. We assist with these basic needs because it means a world of difference to our friends, families and neighbors in need. The Vision We are an organization committed to serving families and all individuals in the fight against hunger and homelessness in the Kennett area and surrounding communities. We are responsible stewards of the community, helping members of the greater Kennett community to lift themselves in a dignified manner out of the cycle of poverty. We achieve this goal by both raising awareness in the community to the needs of the underprivileged with few resources and working with them to identify and work towards solutions to their challenges through a network of community connections that care.

With your support...
The Kennett Food Cupboard offers food to local struggling families on a monthly basis, with special food
projects at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and to the residents of Luther House. The Kennett Food Cupboard is
run almost entirely by volunteers, working over 1,000 hours each month. Distributing 44,000 pounds of
food each month, 90% of this food comes directly from the community in the form of community food
drives, partnerships with local farmers and grocers, community and family gardens and individual
donations. This truly is a community organization.
2014-15 Kennett Food Cupboard Highlights Launched the Healthy Options Program, which merges case management services with Food
Cupboard participants moving to a preventive approach and offering services at early stage crisis. Helped families secure resources and improve self sustainability, reducing overall demand for
services Forged new partnerships with local food providers increased the quality and consistency of nutrition
served, including year-round supplies of milk, produce, quality proteins and whole grains. Replaced aging Food Cupboard truck with new fuel efficient vehicle anticipated to reduce
maintenance and improve efficiency Served 1,197 children and 242 senior citizens. A total of 2,694 people relied on the Food Cupboard
for food. Completed 5,009 ‘shopping trips’ completed by 830 families throughout the year. Holiday Events Highlights: Distributed over 580 turkeys to families to help with their Thanksgiving
dinner and 589 Christmas Baskets of food. Also partnered with groups who organized coats for entire families, as well as toys, bikes and helmets.

With your support... The Emergency Assistance Program blends comprehensive case management, often with financial
assistance for rent, utilities, medical expenses or other basic needs with an end goal of long term
self-sustainability. For families on the verge of homelessness, KACS Case Managers partner with
them and community resources to develop permanent housing plans, walking with them on their
path to independence. The lack of availability, yet increasing demand for safe, affordable housing
continues to drive instability for working families in Southern Chester County as rents rise.
Families and individuals find a caring team of volunteers and staff at KACS that is ready to assist
them in the long journey to secure resources and create a better quality of life for themselves and
their families. KACS assistance means a warm, safe roof overhead for hundreds of households each
year.
2015 KACS Highlights Served 956 individuals (unduplicated) representing 303 families received financial assistance with
emergency needs. $147,050 went to families in need through this program in the form of rent, utilities, heating oil and
more. KACS added 20 hours per week of available case management time. This position directly supports
the Food Cupboard participants and provides early intervention to prevent homelessness and minimize food insecurity.
72% of assistance went towards housing assistance including: mortgage, rent, security deposits and lodging at a local motel for homeless individuals when shelter was unavailable.
KACS negotiated services to over 80 literally homeless households, providing direct rental assistance to permanently house 31 families in safe, affordable housing.
Over 90% of the households moved out of homelessness remained stably housed for at least 90 days after placement.
