CHETCO BAR FIRE Saturday and Sunday the Chetco Bar Fire continued to explode, as noted by the towering clouds visible from the Port of Port Orford, not to mention evacuations, and forest road closures. At one point, with everyone moving south, backup for local forest fires, had CFPA trucks waiting in readiness at the Port. Currently the Chetco Bar fire is the #1 Priority Fire in the nation. With the new designation, if necessary, the incident team can close highway 101 for evacuation.

Hopefully, that does not happen. However, there are many road closures, Carpenterville Road has been closed for several days due to the fire. HOT AUGUST NIGHTS BANDON, OR—The Greater Bandon Association is gearing up for Bandon’s hot August nights. On August 26th, Music in The Park returns to City Park. Pigasus Trio will be on the bandstand from 6 to 9 PM. Papa John’s will be selling food for those that are hungry while The Beverage Barn will be providing beer, wine and soda as outside beverages are not allowed. Annual Southern Oregon Kite Festival which will be held the third weekend of July 2018. Logo design submissions will be accepted until October 20th after which the SOKF Committee will select the winning design. The logo is featured on the front of the kite festival t-shirts and on the cover of the 98-page SOKF program. The original art piece will be donated by the artist to the SOKF, then framed and auctioned to the highest bidder at the festival’s Auction Banquet. The proceeds from the auction help to defray the cost of bringing the kite festival to the community of Brookings-Harbor. The logo artist will be acknowledged in the festival program as well as in kite festival news releases. PORT OF BANDON BOARDWALK ART SHOW BANDON, OR—Artists earn public kudos, 2017 Port of Bandon Boardwalk Art Show Public enthusiasm for the annual Port of Bandon Boardwalk Art Show is at an all-time high. Countless boardwalk visitors have praised the quality of the art and the unique open air installation on the Coquille River boardwalk, according to curator Shawn Tempesta. The 2017 theme, “Blossoms, Butterflies and Bees,” resonates with audience and artists zeal for the beauty of the coastal environment. Works in a variety of styles feature depictions of plant life with pollinating animals and insects– vibrant jewel tones make for an eye-catching boardwalk display with the river and marina as backdrop to the summertime show. “There’s an excitement reflected in the art, especially the student work,” said Tempesta. Visitors to the boardwalk are encouraged to choose their favorites and take part in People’s Choice voting. Ballots are available at Bandon Bait & Tackle, 1010 First St. SE. Voting is open through Sept. 6. Judges’ selections and People’s Choice awards will be announced during Cranberry Festival at the boardwalk amphitheater at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 9. Bandon’s art scene is a hallmark of the community. The port’s permanent art installations and summer boardwalk show are a draw for residents and visitors.

Now in its 15th year, the boardwalk art show features works by amateur and professional artists living throughout southwestern Oregon. Co-curators Tempesta and Ava Richey are avid supporters of public art. They entered artwork in past boardwalk shows before becoming co-curators in 2015. “Art and the sharing of art happen on a large scale in Bandon. We make art accessible to the public and the artists,” said Richey. “We have nature and also the art that expresses what the people are like here. To stand next to the art and see the artist’s translation of the nature is amazing.” “Blossoms, Butterflies and Bees” is a theme selected by curators and port staff in cooperation with the Bandon School District Go Native program. Go Native is a project and place-based learning initiative. Students study biology and horticulture in the classroom, then practice garden and landscape techniques with Darcy Grahek in the Go Native greenhouse and nursery. Public interest in habitat restoration is high, especially in Bandon, where invasive plants such as gorse continue to crowd native plants. The school district received a 2017 Oregon Arts Commission grant for the Wild Rivers Pollinators Project; Grahek collaborated with teachers and students on community arts programs in multidisciplinary learning about pollinators, gorse eradication and habitat restoration. Guest art instructor Vicki Affatati facilitated student works for the boardwalk show. Public art displays include the boardwalk art show, the summer show at Southern Coos Hospital and Health Center, as well as pollinator boards on display throughout Old Town. And, it’s not only student artists who are learning. Tempesta said the educational component of this

year’s boardwalk art theme made a difference in her gardening. Plants she previously plucked as weeds now have a place in her garden since she learned their value to pollinating insects.
