SNAP Benefits—You Could Be Missing Out!

According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), approximately 3 out of 5 older adults who qualify for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits do not participate in the program. This calculates to an estimated 5.2 billion people!

Several factors contribute to the low participation rate. Many older adults face barriers related to mobility, technology, and stigma and are discouraged by widespread myths about how the program works and who can qualify.

For example, one common myth is that a person can only receive $15/month in benefits; in reality, $15 is the MINIMUM amount you can receive, with the average monthly amount for an older adult living alone at $108. Cont on page 8 Special Visitor!

At a recent lunch, State Representative John E. Barnes, Jr., met with CPA lunch participants to discuss SNAP benefits for seniors.

Our Main Office is at South Euclid Community Center at 1370 Victory Dr. in South Euclid, 44121 Main phone: 216-291-3902 Fax: 216-291-0773 Hours: Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

News from the Community Partnership on Aging

Executive Director, Wendy Albin Sattin

December has finally arrived and to me, it conjures up images of holidays filled with joy, happiness and celebration. Let’s keep them that way by protecting yourself from scams that seem to increase during the holiday season. Scams can occur over the phone, in the mail or online in the form of an email or pop-up ad. Here are a few that are circulating now:

1. Grandparent scam. Telephone call from a con artist posing as your grandchild or family member in trouble or traveling and lost their wallet and asks you to wire money, use pre-paid card or some other method of getting cash out of you. Do not send money- it is a scam. Call a

family member to verify if someone is in trouble. 2. Bogus Jury Summons Email. If you have received an emailed jury summons that purports to be from the “Cuyahoga County Court,” do not reply. It is a scam. The Cuyahoga County Clerk of Courts does not summon jurors via email. Do NOT call the toll-free number included in the email. Phoning this number may subject you to illegal robocalls in the future. Do NOT click on any links or attachments in the email. You may download a virus to your device. 3. Package delivery scams. You receive an email or text message with instructions to click a link for the status of a package delivery. Although the message looks real, it’s a scam designed to trick consumers into clicking on the link and infecting their device with malicious software. 4. Utility Shut Off. Scammers posing as utility company employees are calling Cuyahoga County residents and threatening them with immediate utilities shutoffs if they don’t pay. Any utility that plans to shut off your service will send you a written notice, not spring the news on you during a phone call. Hang up and don’t give out any information. If you think you have been contacted by a scammer or have doubts about a call, letter or email you received, call the County’s Scam Squad at 216-443-SCAM (7226).

As the winter holidays approach, the Community Partnership on Aging would like to thank our dedicated Advisory Board members, our amazing volunteers, our generous sponsors and donors and our wonderful participants. We want to take this opportunity to recognize Paul Elhindi and the AFPD for their substantial donation of turkeys that made Thanksgiving a little easier for some of our CPA participants.

We wish you and yours a joyous holiday season and a happy new year with peace and contentment for all.
