  • 2013 Annual Report

    Serving Chicago since 1984

  • Our MissionAmate House, the young adult volunteer program of the Archdiocese of Chicago, fosters the transformation of its

Volunteers by providing experiences of full time service to people in need, community living, and faith formation. Amate House develops future leaders for the church and world who

are committed to building a more just and loving society.

  • “For better or worse, the people, the challenges, the experiences, and the love that this program embodies will stay with me long after I leave Amate House.” -Lizzy McDonald, North House Volunteer

Amate House has been dedicated to serving Chicago since 1984. Each year, 8 to 13 Volunteers live closely as a faith-based intentional community. Volunteers commit to living simply and to sharing in the richness of each other’s experiences through daily conversation and weekly reflections, prayer, and discussion. Our emphasis on community stems from our belief that no one stands alone - our call to service cannot be sustained if we exist in isolation.

Our Volunteers serve at sites in a variety of fields, including: education, health education and outreach, hunger and homeless services, legal aid, nursing, physical therapy, and service to the elderly, youth, and immigrant populations.

Amate House Volunteers live out five main tenets: Service, Community, Faith, Social Justice, and Stewardship.

  • Dear Friends and Supporters,

Each year, the annual report is a great time to reflect upon what Amate House means, how it works, and the impact it has in our communities. Through this year’s Volunteers, Amate House has yet again touched the lives of thousands of people throughout Chicago who are in need of assistance and compassion. We are proud of all we have accomplished in our 29 years, yet we also look to the future as it is filled with so many opportunities to live out the Gospel as Jesus has taught us. We continue to seek out ways in which we can improve the Amate House experience for our Volunteers.

This year, Amate House has been working toward the purchase of our South House. We hope that within the next few months, the acquisition will be complete. Owning a second house – in addition to our Little Village House – will allow us to confirm our commitment to Chicago, as well as solidify the future of our organization.

Board Members and Staff are still in the midst of executing our Strategic Plan. We are especially focused on increasing our commitment to diversity within our organization and improving our fund development plan. We have made great strides in both areas, but continue to work toward a better future for Amate House.

When we look back upon 29 years and the cumulative impact of Amate House, it is truly astonishing! What is even more spectacular and humbling is the amazing generosity this organization has received from so many individuals as well as businesses, parishes, and organizations - more than 500 supporters this year alone. Your belief in our mission through prayers, talents, and financial support has allowed Amate House to fulfill its dream of forming young adults into future leaders of the Church and world – nearly 700 Volunteers completed our program since its formation. It is with the deepest gratitude that we thank you for your continued support. We are excited to have you alongside us as we continue this journey of Love in Action!

    In Christ’s Love,

Dan Brunnert and John LucasBoard President and Executive Director

  • “It has been rewarding for me to have conflicts, misunderstandings, and challenges in my relationships with my housemates, but then to bring them to the table to work through again and again. There’s a lot of grace in community.”

    -Rachel Picher, Little Village Volunteer

  • Amate House held its 17th annual benefit, Amate Magic - A Celebration of Service to Chicago, in Navy Pier’s Grand Ballroom on Friday, April 26, 2013, raising over $130,000. Amate House is very grateful for all who supported this event through their attendance, service, donated items for the auction and raffle, financial support and prayers.

During the evening Amate House honored its 33 young adult Volunteers who live in community, participate in opportunities of personal, professional and spiritual development, share a simple lifestyle, and serve at under-resourced agencies, parishes and schools throughout the city of Chicago.

Richard & Betty O’Toole were honored with the Mary Ellen Nolan Guardian Angel Award for their continued generosity and friendship, and alumna Meredith McLane was presented with the Founders’ Award for her continued example of ‘Love in Action.’ Chris Wagar was also honored for her 25 years of service with two handmade quilts with signatures from alumni and supporters.

Amate Magic would not be possible without the support of our generous Title and Presenting Sponsors: Radio Flyer Inc, Corporate Fulfillment Services, and Wintrust Financial. We would also like to offer a special thanks to all our guests for their generous support.
