First Thoughts

Dear Church,

Did you know that this year is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation? This revolutionary time has proven to be one of the most pivotal and important movements in the history of humanity. It goes without saying that the First Baptist Church of Augusta exists because of men like Martin Luther, who were brave enough to stand up and protest a Church that, they believed, had lost its way in the world. This Sunday, October 1, at 5:30 pm, eight churches from all around Augusta will gather together at St. Paul’s to worship God and commemorate this special anniversary of the Reformation.

One of the former pastors of our church, Tim Owings, will be preaching the sermon and the music will be lead by the choir of Beulah Grove Baptist Church. We will also celebrate communion. I am going to be there and I hope that you will be able to attend as well. St. Paul’s Church is located at 605 Reynolds Street.

Shifting gears, I am excited to continue our series “This is Us.” If you missed last week, I want to invite you to go to our website and catch up on what you missed. This Sunday, I want to talk about what it means for us to be a “Discipling Church,” or better yet, what does it mean for us to “Live It.” It is going to be a great Sunday.

New Sunday morning Bible study opportunity! The Journey Community, a coed class in their 60's, would like to invite all interested to join them as they begin to participate in the seminar rotation Bible study model beginning October 8th with a Big Breakfast (a time of fellowship and brief introduction to the study material). The first seminar leader up is Les Powell who will be teaching on The Seven Deadly Sins. We are especially interested in reaching those who have not been attending a Bible study on Sunday morning.

With this addition, we now have three coed communities spanning ages from early 30's-early 40's (The Village), mid 40's-late 50's (Living Water), and 60's (Journey). So we have a place for you! New women’s Wednesday Morning Bible Study, “Horizontal Jesus,” by Dr. Tony Evans,

6 weeks beginning October 11, 9:30 - 11:30 AM 2nd floor/Daniel Building.

Loving God is vertical love. Loving others is horizontal love. Jesus showed His disciples how these two loves are intertwined in practical ways. While our relationship with God is based on faith alone, He warns and encourages us that the way we treat people affects our experience with Him. Workbooks ($14) are available for purchase when you attend. All NEW women must register and reserve their book by contacting Rebecca Elkin ([email protected]). For free childcare, email Patti Fowler at [email protected].

The Missions’ Fair was great! Thank you Terrie Bennett for all your work, and for letting church members see all that we do in our ministries and missions. It was encouraging to hear from Juanita McDaniel, that through our programs, we are truly making an impact in our community for those in need. We are a loving and caring church. Thank you to all the church members that work in the programs seen in the Fellowship Hall. Our involvement in caring for others also moves us to the love we share internationally through our many mission trips. We are very blessed as a church to have members involved in outreach, for this is what Jesus asks us to do. Thank you, Terrie and volunteers, for the wonderful and informative Missions’ Fair! Thank you to the Vietnamese Church for letting us recognize you last Sunday. How grateful we are as a church to have been a part of helping you become a thriving, committed church.Thank you also for the beautiful rendition of How Great Thou Art, it touched our hearts. This Sunday we are recognizing the Chinese Sunday School. They became an important part of our church in 1885! We look forward to welcoming them.
