Brooke S., Markesha C., and Kyle VH. (front to back): Brooke S. said she’s interested in looking up those cat videos! “I like the information that we get while online,” said Kyle VH. “With the new ones [computers] that we just got, we can hang out here and use them.”

Friends Shawn M., Jack P., and Kyle H. are enjoying the comfy chairs as they talk about the upcycling ideas they explored online.

Access to technology means access to information, expanded horizons, and,

of course, cat videos! Open Door is very proud to announce that we recently unveiled our new Learning & Resource Center, which means ODDO can now take us to all kinds of new places! The freshly

remodeled space is equipped with laptops, tablets, a big-screen smart TV,

cubicles (for when you want a bit of privacy), a coffee bar and plenty of comfy

places for lounging. It continues to be an enjoyed area since its opening, and

everyone is having a fun time learning more about the world and what they like!

Lori B. and Ryan W. use the internet to practice their sign language skills when not in sign language class!

Clarence B. said he’s looking up how to play baseball in Major League Baseball (MLB).

Next on our wish list is a program area remodel. We have a good start on making this a reality with a generous $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley.

ODDO and everyone at ODRC are forever pleased, grateful, and appreciative to the DeKalb County Community Foundation and Walmart for their generous grants that made this remodeling project possible. We would also like to thank everyone who donated to the 2019 Give DeKalb County campaign this past May. Those donations went toward furniture and computers for the new Learning & Resource Center. Thank you for moving our vision forward to open even more doors to the world for our clients!

FUN & RECREATION

Lori B. (in red) and Rachel N. (in purple) learn good form and control with the ball apparatus.

Denise M. (in navy) practices her rope skills to the song “Hoedown Throwdown”.

Moving & Grooving with Rhythmic Gymnastics Combine elements of ballet and gymnastics; add dance moves, ribbons and a ball; and a whole new sport is born! The Kendall County Special Olympics (KCSO) group has added “rhythmic gymnastics” to its long list of sports that athletes can learn and enjoy. Three Open Door clients have joined the 7-person Rhythmic Gymnastics team: Lori B., Denise M. and Rachel N. They are excited to attend practices and are having a fantastic experience learning new skills.

Mastering a new sport can be difficult, but these ladies have an enthusiastic attitude for learning and have welcomed the challenge. Rachel N. watches routine videos on the KCSO website, and brings her ribbon wherever she goes so she can practice. The team is learning four different routines put to music that require the use of special apparatuses. They utilize ribbons, balls and hoops, and even complete one floor routine that requires no equipment. The routines appear to be quite challenging to an onlooker, but Denise M. says: “They are totally easy.” Denise also admits that she enjoys working with the ribbons the most.

The Rhythmic Gymnastics team will perform in a Special Olympics competition in March of 2020. We wish all of the KCSO athletes another year full of fun and success, as they practice and compete.

Ribbon handling and rhythmic steps require great concentration from Rachel N. (in purple).

HEALTH &

WELL-BEING

LOOKS LIKE WE MADE IT: One More Journey to Greater Health and Fitness! This fall, Open Door participated in “The Great Pumpkin Run,” a virtual 5K. The goal was to tally 3.1 miles at each individual’s own pace over a six-week period. We are always looking for new and exciting ways to promote fitness, and this activity certainly kept the motivation high. Some participants were determined to reach their goal very quickly by zooming through the sidewalks of Sandwich walking to and from work. What a great way to clear your head and get some exercise! Others gained miles by taking leisurely walks while on break, by strolling around the forest preserve or at an indoor track. Whatever their motivation, 42 participants gave it their best and completed the challenge!

Just like everything in life, there are always challenges, and some had to work harder than others to complete their goals. Several participants have physical disabilities that require them to push themselves a little harder and keep that “never give up” attitude! The final stretch for those who still had a bit more to go was held at Go For It Sports, where the final satisfying steps were made which assured that all 42 participants were provided the opportunity to complete their goal.

With those long legs and a head full of enthusiasm, James A. was able to gain mileage barely hitting the

ground. You could feel the wind as he zoomed by!

Looks like we made it!!!! This group rallies for one another and exhibits… Open Door Pride!!! Follow us on Facebook to stay tuned for our next adventure!

As her medal was placed around her neck, Denise M. beamed proudly.

Lauren B. and Marcus R. wheeled the miles by laughing and smiling all the way!

Cathy H. grinned with pride at her accomplishment after she

completed all her miles at a slow but steady pace.

In addition to personal pride, self-worth and sense of accomplishment, everyone received a medal and a sweatshirt as a “trophy” for their accomplishment. Another example of health and fitness is on the books! Many plan to continue being active this winter by utilizing our many community resources, enabling us to remain active and healthy no matter what obstacles we may encounter. Rumor has it some are looking into “color runs” and, yes, even a “Tough Mudder” obstacle course. The list is endless, but the goal remains the same. It’s not just about the T-shirt… it’s the journey and the process it takes to get there!

The beginning of a lifelong love affair with yarn.

Smiles & personality to

spare!

We recently said goodbye to a treasured Open Door family member, Miss Cindy Coleman. It is with great fondness and gratitude that we remember her, the history that we

have shared, and the unique way she impacted our lives. Cindy joined our Open Door family on January 5, 1966 at the age of 16, when Open Door was in its infancy. Over the next 53 years, Cindy lived a happy and full life as Open Door blossomed into the agency it is today.

One of Cindy’s claims to fame was being a “Valentine’s” baby, and believe me, she wouldn’t let anybody forget it! Most suitably, Cindy had a cherub-like smile which Cupid himself would be jealous of, a trait that made her birthday that much more fitting.

Cindy was also well known for having a lovable and playful—yet occasionally frustrating—stubborn streak. Even though Cindy wasn’t much of a talker, there was no confusion if Cindy liked something or not. She would let you know with a very vocal and distinct “No way!” And if she didn’t want to do something, well... that’s that! But aren’t we all like that? This is why so many people found Cindy to be incredibly charming, relatable, and lovable.

In addition to her unique and lovable personality, Cindy was also known for one particular talent. With the use of only her left hand, Cindy taught herself to crochet! Using no crochet hook, she employed her talented and nimble fingers to create yards and yards of crochet chains. Volunteers would then turn her chains into beautiful blankets, scarves, and craft projects such as wrapped picture frames, which Cindy would lovingly give away as… “chains of love.” Cindy was always on the lookout for more yarn, even asking for more at Christmas and on her birthday.

Cindy’s kindheartedness didn’t stop there. Cindy loved to collect and save aluminum pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House charity and asked her family and friends to do the same. Over the years, Cindy must have personally been responsible for donating tens of thousands of the shiny little gems.

Everyone who knew Cindy is fondly reminded of her whenever they see a ball of yarn or open a can of soda. Cindy’s memory also reminds us that everyone has special talents, and to be kind and compassionate toward others... because we are all connected and bound through our humanity... through our chains of love.

Do you have any more yarn?

Chains of Love

Rita Potter, Open Door Executive Director, accepted a donation from Dan Workman and Stephanie Olson of Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Millbrook, Illinois. Yogi Bear campers participated in the campground Annual Wet & Wild Weekend and collected donations for throws in a dunk tank game. Thank you to all the campers at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park for thinking of our Open Door clients with your generous donation!

The Flight Tasting Room & Bottle Shoppe in Yorkville chose Open Door as its November charity of the month. Each time a patron gave a tip in November, those funds were collected to benefit Open Door. Dick Banning, Open Door President, recently accepted the donation from the co-owners: Tony and Emily Weeks, and Melissa and Ryan Phillips. (Emily Weeks was unavailable for the picture.) Open Door sincerely thanks each patron who gave a donation. THANK YOU!

Open Door would like to thank the Knights of Columbus, Council #13436 for their generous donation. Members hand out Tootsie Roll candy to donors during this fundraiser. Pictured (from the left): Nick Cinfio; Rita Potter, Open Door Executive Director; Mark Oropeza; Richard Glass.

Thank you to the Sandwich High School football team for holding the fundraiser “Blackout 2019,” an event that benefited Open Door. Pictured (from left) are Renee Roop, caseworker; Shawn M.; Tim Gipe, Sandwich High School athletic director; Austin C.
