Gloria

1. Glory in the highest to the God of heaven! Peace to all your people through the earth be given! Mighty God and Father, thanks and praise we bring, singing Alleluia to our heavenly king;

2. Jesus Christ is risen, God the Father's Son! With the Holy Spirit you are Lord alone! Lamb once killed for sinners, all our guilt to bear, show us now your mercy, now receive our prayer;

3. Christ the world's true Saviour, high and holy one, seated now and reigning from your Father's throne: Lord and God, we praise you! Highest heaven adores:

in the Father's glory, all the praise be yours!

Words: Christopher Idle (b 1938) Music: Camberwell, John Micael Brierley (b 1932) – AM 593i (A&M – 415)

Collect

Almighty God, in Christ you make all things new: transform the poverty of our nature by the riches of your grace, and in the renewal of our lives

make known your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Additional Collect

Eternal Lord, our beginning and our end:

bring us with the whole creation to your glory, hidden through past ages and made known in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

First Reading – Isaiah 49.1-7 *

Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away! The LORD called me before I was born, while I was in my mother’s womb he named me. He made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away. And he said to me, ‘You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.’ But I said, ‘I have laboured in vain, I have

spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my cause is with the LORD, and my reward with my God.’ And now the LORD says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honoured in the sight of the LORD, and my God has become my

strength – he says, ‘It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.’ Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred

by the nations, the slave of rulers, ‘Kings shall see and stand up, princes, and they shall prostrate themselves, because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.’

Second Reading – 1 Corinthians 1.1-9

From Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: Grace to you and peace

from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind – just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you – so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He

will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Gospel – John 1.29-42

John the Baptist saw Jesus coming towards him and declared, ‘Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, “After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.” I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed

to Israel.’ And John testified, ‘I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove , and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, “He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the

Page 5: Services in the Team todayoakhamteam.uk/docs/pewsheet/2020/202001/20200119/pewsheet_20200119_brooke.pdfJan 19, 2020  · my reward with my God.’ And now the LORD says, who formed

one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.” And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.’ The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, ‘Look, here is the Lamb of

God!’ The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, ‘What are you looking for?’ They said to him, ‘Rabbi’ (which translated means Teacher), ‘where are you staying?’ He said to them, ‘Come and see.’ They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. One of the

two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas’ (which is translated

Peter).

Post Communion Prayer

God of glory, you nourish us with your Word

who is the bread of life: fill us with your Holy Spirit that through us the light of your glory may shine in all the world.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

News from St Peter

Brooke

It is over two years since St Peter was a victim of lead theft from the roof, which was quite soon replaced, but it

was not discovered at the time that the

lead from the tower roof had also been stolen – this did not become apparent until about three months later. Sadly,

during this time winter rains had gradually been soaking through the roof timbers and bell frame until it was dripping onto the ringers one practise night. Tarpaulins were quickly put in

place to prevent more water coming in and allow the timbers to dry out. Our architect recommended we replace the stolen lead with Terne coated steel

(this gives a lead patina appearance to the steel) which meant that we had to apply to the Diocesan Archdeacon’s Committee and the Chancellor to the

Diocese for a ‘faculty’ giving us permission to use a different roof material. This all took many months before finally being given the ‘go ahead’.

Any day now the scaffolding will go up and the long overdue work can begin.

More news of goings on at St Peter’s Church during 2019 can be found on the website.

Open House 2020

Open House is a regular opportunity to call in for tea or coffee and a friendly chat, between 10am and 12noon, hosted at someone different’s home each month. Dates this year are 17 Feb,

20 Mar, 23 Apr, 14 May, 16 Jun, 14 Jul, 18 Aug, 10 Sep , 15 Oct, 10 Nov & 1 Dec. More details in the diary section monthly or from Sarah Bilsdon (01572

723507). The first one this year is on Monday 17 February at Beryl and David Kirtland’s house, 25 Brooke Road.

Age UK – Volunteers

Needed

Age UK Leicestershire and Rutland are

looking for volunteers to help support their many activities. At the moment there is an urgent need for a volunteers to become befrienders to the socially

isolated members of our community. Full support and training is given and then in return volunteers are matched and hopefully enjoy some conversation

and friendship. Help is also required with a dementia group that meets weekly on a Tuesday morning at Tesco’s (9.45am–12.15pm) – assistance with tea and coffee making and support

to the structured sessions is required. Please contact Yvonne Rawlings (01572 770324/[email protected]) for further information.

Oakham Mission Giving

Once the accounts for 2019 are finalised, the Oakham PCC distributes 10% of planned giving to charity; we follow a

formula of international, national and local areas for giving and ask you to suggest any particular charity you would wish a portion of the total to be sent. The next PCC meeting is on 28 January,

so place your ideas in my pigeon hole (PCC Secretary). Thank you! Marilyn.

New Curate

I'm delighted to announce that we will be

welcoming a new curate in 2020. Simon Aley of Manton, Rutland, is currently completing his ordination training and will be ordained at Peterborough Cathedral

on Sunday 28 June 2020 at 4pm. Please

pray for Simon and his wife Carys as they prepare for this new chapter in their lives. Charlotte and Iain will remain in

post until at least Easter 2020. This is the new sign-off date for curates in Peterborough Diocese. After that they are free to respond to a call to ministry elsewhere. However they will retain the

Bishop's license to serve in the Oakham Team until the end of the year should that be necessary. They will remain involved in their current areas of specific

ministry as well as more generally throughout the Team until they move to a new appointment. Please pray for them as they discern the next steps that God

has for them. Stephen.
