Classical robot systems are being used for radiotherapy such as the CyberKnifeTM of Accuray (USA). Incorporating a compact linear accelerator mounted on an industrial robotic arm, the system provides the surgeon with unparalleled flexibility in targeting. Advanced image guidance technology tracks patient and target positions during treatment, ensuring accuracy without use of an invasive head frame.

The SenseiTM Robotic Catheter System of HansenMedical assists the surgeon in precision catheter guidance. The system replicates the surgeon’s hand movements which are captured by a 3D motion input device to position the working catheter. The flexible catheter is controlled by external servo drives. Similar functionality is attributed to the ViaCath System of endoVia Medical (USA).

Level of distribution

With experience and knowledge gained from the systems already in use, acceptance of surgical robots is in general growing. The number of operations requiring technically advanced methods is increasing, and as a result, new methods are being sought.

In addition, many more systems are being developed or are currently in their prototype phase and awaiting approval from medical authorities.

While so far about 3,700 systems are in use, sales of 2,700 units are projected for 2007-2010

Cost benefit analysis and major restraints on further diffusion

The MAS procedure lets the surgeon lose tactile sense and restricts his manipulative capability. Telesurgical devices are set to remedy this. “Virtual instruments“. Positioning robots allow for faster and more convenient positioning.

Sensor information is used to quickly correct goal coordinates representing the area of intervention. ExacTrac X-Ray of BrainLAB which interfaces with most treatment couches, allowing accurate set-up verification & automated patient positioning After precise determination of the required correction shift, ExacTrac X-Ray 6D interfaces with couches for immediate and fully automatic table motion. Patient set-up becomes more efficient, saving time for the therapist and guaranteeing clinical throughput.
